There is a warning message in my test with below steps:
# rbd bench --io-type write --io-size 4K --io-threads 1 --io-pattern rand test &
# sleep 5
# pkill -9 rbd
# rbd map test &
# sleep 5
# pkill rbd
The reason is that the rbd_add_acquire_lock() is interruptable,
that means, when we kill the waiting on ->acquire_wait, the lock_dwork
could be still running.
1. do_rbd_add() 2. lock_dwork
rbd_add_acquire_lock()
- queue_delayed_work()
lock_dwork queued
- wait_for_completion_killable_timeout() <-- kill happen
rbd_dev_image_unlock() <-- UNLOCKED now, nothing to do.
rbd_dev_device_release()
rbd_dev_image_release()
- ...
lock successed here
- cancel_delayed_work_sync(&rbd_dev->lock_dwork)
Then when we reach the rbd_dev_free(), WARN_ON is triggered because
lock_state is not RBD_LOCK_STATE_UNLOCKED.
To fix it, this commit make sure the lock_dwork was finished before
calling rbd_dev_image_unlock().
On the other hand, this would not happend in do_rbd_remove(), because
after rbd mapped, lock_dwork will only be queued for IO request, and
request will continue unless lock_dwork finished. when we call
rbd_dev_image_unlock() in do_rbd_remove(), all requests are done.
That means, lock_state should not be locked again after
rbd_dev_image_unlock().
[ Cancel lock_dwork in rbd_add_acquire_lock(), only if the wait is
interrupted. ]

1. nbd_put takes the mutex and drops nbd->ref to 0. It then does
idr_remove and drops the mutex.
2. nbd_genl_connect takes the mutex. idr_find/idr_for_each fails
to find an existing device, so it does nbd_dev_add.
3. just before the nbd_put could call nbd_dev_remove or not finished
totally, but if nbd_dev_add try to add_disk, we can hit:
debugfs: Directory 'nbd1' with parent 'block' already present!
This patch will make sure all the disk add/remove stuff are done
by holding the nbd_index_mutex lock.

The return code from null_handle_zoned() sets the cmd->error value.
Returning OK status when an error occured overwrites the intended
cmd->error. Return the appropriate error code instead of setting the
error in the cmd.

The loop driver assumes that if the passed in fd is opened with
O_DIRECT, the caller wants to use direct I/O on the loop device.
However, if the underlying block device has a different block size than
the loop block queue, direct I/O can't be enabled. Instead of requiring
userspace to manually change the blocksize and re-enable direct I/O,
just change the queue block sizes to match, as well as the io_min size.

Add RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS_MAX, which generates augmented rbtree callbacks
for the case where the augmented value is a scalar whose definition
follows a max(f(node)) pattern. This actually covers all present uses of
RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS, and saves some (source) code duplication in the
various RBCOMPUTE function definitions.

Apparently debian auto-attaches any cdrom like device to pktcdvd, which

When the NBD_CFLAG_DESTROY_ON_DISCONNECT flag is set and at the same
time when the socket is closed due to the server daemon is restarted,
just before the last DISCONNET is totally done if we start a new connection

The module load should fail only if there is something wrong with the
configuration or if an error prevents it to work properly. The module
should be able to be loaded with (nr_device == 0), since it will not
trigger errors or be in malfunction state. Preventing loading with zero
devices also breaks applications that configures this module using
configfs API. Remove the nr_device check to fix this.

rbd_dev_image_id() allocates space for length but passes a smaller
value to rbd_obj_method_sync(). rbd_dev_v2_object_prefix() doesn't
allocate space for length. Fix both to be consistent.

A negative number of devices is nonsensical, so change the type to
unsigned. If the number of devices is 0, it is impossible for userspace
to interact with the module, so refuse loading the driver for that case.

Using the helper blk_queue_required_elevator_features(), set the
elevator feature ELEVATOR_F_ZBD_SEQ_WRITE as required for the request
queue of null_blk devices created with zoned mode enabled.
This feature requirement can always be satisfied as the mq-deadline
elevator is always selected for in-kernel compilation when
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_ZONED (zoned block device support) is enabled.

The parent image is read only up to the overlap point, the rest of
the buffer should be zeroed. This snuck in because as it turns out
the overlap test case has not been triggering this code path for
a while now.

This patch creates a helper function for handling zoned block device
operations.
This patch also restructured the code for null_blk_zoned.c and uses the
pattern to return blk_status_t and catch the error in the function
null_handle_cmd() into cmd->error variable instead of setting it up in
the deeper layer just like the way it is done for flush, badblocks and
memory backed case in the null_handle_cmd(). We also move
null_handle_zoned() to the null_blk_zoned.c to keep the zoned code
separate.

This patch creates a helper for handling requests when null_blk is
memory backed in the null_handle_cmd(). Although the helper is very
simple right now, it makes the code flow consistent with the rest of
code in the null_handle_cmd() and provides a uniform code structure
for future code.

This is a preparation patch which moves the duplicate code for sectors
and nr_sectors calculations for bio vs request mode into their
respective callers (null_queue_bio(), null_qeueue_req()). Now the core
function only deals with the respective actions and commands instead of
having to calculte the bio vs req operations and different sector
related variables. We also move the flush command handling at the top
which significantly simplifies the rest of the code.

nbd: add multi-connection support
that limited the number of devices to 256. Before the patch we could
create 1000s of devices, but the patch switched us from using our
own thread to using a work queue which has a default limit of 256
active works.
The problem is that our recv_work function sits in a loop until
disconnection but only handles IO for one connection. The work is
started when the connection is started/restarted, but if we end up
creating 257 or more connections, the queue_work call just queues
connection257+'s recv_work and that waits for connection 1 - 256's
recv_work to be disconnected and that work instance completing.
Instead of reverting back to kthreads, this has us allocate a
workqueue_struct per device, so we can block in the work.

nbd: allow block mq to deal with timeouts
where before the patch userspace would set the timeout to 0 to disable
it. With the above patch, a zero timeout tells the block layer to use
the default value of 30 seconds. For setups where commands can take a
long time or experience transient issues like network disruptions this
then results in IO errors being sent to the application.
To fix this, the patch still uses the common block layer timeout
framework, but if zero is set, nbd just logs a message and then resets
the timer when it expires.

Pull kernel thread signal handling fix from Eric Biederman:
"I overlooked the fact that kernel threads are created with all signals
set to SIG_IGN, and accidentally caused a regression in cifs and drbd
when replacing force_sig with send_sig.
This is my fix for that regression. I add a new function
allow_kernel_signal which allows kernel threads to receive signals
sent from the kernel, but continues to ignore all signals sent from
userspace. This ensures the user space interface for cifs and drbd
remain the same.
These kernel threads depend on blocking networking calls which block
until something is received or a signal is pending. Making receiving
of signals somewhat necessary for these kernel threads.
Perhaps someday we can cleanup those interfaces and remove
allow_kernel_signal. If not allow_kernel_signal is pretty trivial and
clearly documents what is going on so I don't think we will mind
carrying it"

My recent to change to only use force_sig for a synchronous events
wound up breaking signal reception cifs and drbd. I had overlooked
the fact that by default kthreads start out with all signals set to
SIG_IGN. So a change I thought was safe turned out to have made it
impossible for those kernel thread to catch their signals.
Reverting the work on force_sig is a bad idea because what the code
was doing was very much a misuse of force_sig. As the way force_sig
ultimately allowed the signal to happen was to change the signal
handler to SIG_DFL. Which after the first signal will allow userspace
to send signals to these kernel threads. At least for
wake_ack_receiver in drbd that does not appear actively wrong.
So correct this problem by adding allow_kernel_signal that will allow
signals whose siginfo reports they were sent by the kernel through,
but will not allow userspace generated signals, and update cifs and
drbd to call allow_kernel_signal in an appropriate place so that their
thread can receive this signal.
Fixing things this way ensures that userspace won't be able to send
signals and cause problems, that it is clear which signals the
threads are expecting to receive, and it guarantees that nothing
else in the system will be affected.
This change was partly inspired by similar cifs and drbd patches that
added allow_signal.

In read_per_ring_refs(), after 'req' and related memory regions are
allocated, xen_blkif_map() is invoked to map the shared frame, irq, and
etc. However, if this mapping process fails, no cleanup is performed,
leading to memory leaks. To fix this issue, invoke the cleanup before
returning the error.

Enabling Direct I/O with loop devices helps reducing memory usage by
avoiding double caching. 32 bit applications running on 64 bits systems
are currently not able to request direct I/O because is missing from the
lo_compat_ioctl.
This patch fixes the compatibility issue mentioned above by exporting
LOOP_SET_DIRECT_IO as additional lo_compat_ioctl() entry.
The input argument for this ioctl is a single long converted to a 1-bit
boolean, so compatibility is preserved.

A deadlock with this stacktrace was observed.
The loop thread does a GFP_KERNEL allocation, it calls into dm-bufio
shrinker and the shrinker depends on I/O completion in the dm-bufio
subsystem.
In order to fix the deadlock (and other similar ones), we set the flag
PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO at loop thread entry.

Commit abbbdf12497d ("replace kill_bdev() with __invalidate_device()")
once did this, but 29eaadc03649 ("nbd: stop using the bdev everywhere")
resurrected kill_bdev() and it has been there since then. So buffer_head
mappings still get killed on a server disconnection, and we can still
hit the BUG_ON on a filesystem on the top of the nbd device.

Commit 33ec3e53e7b1 ("loop: Don't change loop device under exclusive
opener") made LOOP_SET_FD ioctl acquire exclusive block device reference
while it updates loop device binding. However this can make perfectly
valid mount(2) fail with EBUSY due to racing LOOP_SET_FD holding
temporarily the exclusive bdev reference in cases like this:

Fix the problem by not getting full exclusive bdev reference in
LOOP_SET_FD but instead just mark the bdev as being claimed while we
update the binding information. This just blocks new exclusive openers
instead of failing them with EBUSY thus fixing the problem.
