2018-04-26perf buildid-cache: Support --purge-all optionRavi Bangoria
User can remove files from cache using --remove/--purge options but both needs list of files as an argument. It's not convenient when you want to flush out entire cache. Add an option to purge all files from cache. Ex, # perf buildid-cache -l 8a86ef73e44067bca52cc3f6cd3e5446c783391c /tmp/a.out ebe71fdcf4b366518cc154d570a33cd461a51c36 /tmp/a.out.1 # perf buildid-cache -P -v Removing /tmp/a.out (8a86ef73e44067bca52cc3f6cd3e5446c783391c): Ok Removing /tmp/a.out.1 (ebe71fdcf4b366518cc154d570a33cd461a51c36): Ok Purged all: Ok Signed-off-by: Ravi Bangoria <ravi.bangoria@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Kate Stewart <kstewart@linuxfoundation.org> Cc: Krister Johansen <kjlx@templeofstupid.com> Cc: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Philippe Ombredanne <pombredanne@nexb.com> Cc: Sihyeon Jang <uneedsihyeon@gmail.com> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20180417041346.5617-4-ravi.bangoria@linux.vnet.ibm.com [ Initialize 'err' in build_id_cache__purge_all(), to fix build on debian:7, as it can be used uninitialized ] Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2018-04-26perf buildid-cache: Support --list optionRavi Bangoria
'perf buildid-cache' allows to add/remove files into cache but there is no option to list all cached files. Add --list option to list all _valid_ cached files. Ex, # perf buildid-cache --add /tmp/a.out # perf buildid-cache -l 8a86ef73e44067bca52cc3f6cd3e5446c783391c /tmp/a.out Signed-off-by: Ravi Bangoria <ravi.bangoria@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Kate Stewart <kstewart@linuxfoundation.org> Cc: Krister Johansen <kjlx@templeofstupid.com> Cc: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Philippe Ombredanne <pombredanne@nexb.com> Cc: Sihyeon Jang <uneedsihyeon@gmail.com> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20180417041346.5617-3-ravi.bangoria@linux.vnet.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-05-02perf symbols: Accept symbols starting at address 0Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo
That is the case of _text on s390, and we have some functions that return an address, using address zero to report problems, oops. This would lead the symbol loading routines to not use "_text" as the reference relocation symbol, or the first symbol for the kernel, but use instead "_stext", that is at the same address on x86_64 and others, but not on s390: [acme@localhost perf-4.11.0-rc6]$ head -15 /proc/kallsyms 0000000000000000 T _text 0000000000000418 t iplstart 0000000000000800 T start 000000000000080a t .base 000000000000082e t .sk8x8 0000000000000834 t .gotr 0000000000000842 t .cmd 0000000000000846 t .parm 000000000000084a t .lowcase 0000000000010000 T startup 0000000000010010 T startup_kdump 0000000000010214 t startup_kdump_relocated 0000000000011000 T startup_continue 00000000000112a0 T _ehead 0000000000100000 T _stext [acme@localhost perf-4.11.0-rc6]$ Which in turn would make 'perf test vmlinux' to fail because it wouldn't find the symbols before "_stext" in kallsyms. 2016-07-12tools: Introduce str_error_r()Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo
The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else. But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine Linux, where musl libc is used. So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is returned. 2013-10-14perf buildid-cache: Add ability to add kcore to the cacheAdrian Hunter
kcore can be used to view the running kernel object code. However, kcore changes as modules are loaded and unloaded, and when the kernel decides to modify its own code. Consequently it is useful to create a copy of kcore at a particular time. Unlike vmlinux, kcore is not unique for a given build-id. And in addition, the kallsyms and modules files are also needed. The tool therefore creates a directory: ~/.debug/[kernel.kcore]/<build-id>/<YYYYmmddHHMMSShh> which contains: kcore, kallsyms and modules. Note that the copied kcore contains only code sections. See the kcore_copy() function for how that is determined. The tool will not make additional copies of kcore if there is already one with the same modules at the same addresses. Currently, perf tools will not look for kcore in the cache. That is addressed in another patch. 2012-09-11perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variablesIrina Tirdea
perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking unused variables. The variable __used is defined to __attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to __attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning: '__used__' attribute ignored __unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition. If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name in its headers. The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android. This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with __maybe_unused. 2012-09-11perf tools: Back [vdso] DSO with real dataJiri Olsa
Storing data for VDSO shared object, because we need it for the post unwind processing. The VDSO shared object is same for all process on a running system, so it makes no difference when we store it inside the tracer - perf. When [vdso] map memory is hit, we retrieve [vdso] DSO image and store it into temporary file. During the build-id processing phase, the [vdso] DSO image is stored in build-id db, and build-id reference is made inside perf.data. The build-id vdso file object is called '[vdso]'. We don't use temporary file name which gets removed when record is finished. During report phase the vdso build-id object is treated as any other build-id DSO object. Adding following API for vdso object: bool is_vdso_map(const char *filename) - returns true if the filename matches vdso map name struct dso *vdso__dso_findnew(struct list_head *head) - find/create proper vdso DSO object vdso__exit(void) - removes temporary VDSO image if there's any This change makes backtrace dwarf post unwind possible from [vdso] maps. 2010-06-05perf buildid: add perfconfig option to specify buildid cache dirStephane Eranian
This patch adds the ability to specify an alternate directory to store the buildid cache (buildids, copy of binaries). By default, it is hardcoded to $HOME/.debug. This directory contains immutable data. The layout of the directory is such that no conflicts in filenames are possible. A modification in a file, yields a different buildid and thus a different location in the subdir hierarchy. You may want to put the buildid cache elsewhere because of disk space limitation or simply to share the cache between users. It is also useful for remote collect vs. local analysis of profiles. This patch adds a new config option to the perfconfig file. Under the tag 'buildid', there is a dir option. For instance, if you have: $ cat /etc/perfconfig [buildid] dir = /var/cache/perf-buildid All buildids and binaries are be saved in the directory specified. The perf record, buildid-list, buildid-cache, report, annotate, and archive commands will it to pull information out. 2010-04-14perf: Fix endianness argument compatibility with OPT_BOOLEAN() and introduce ↵Ian Munsie
OPT_INCR() Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool and would therefore print out the usage information and terminate. This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is currently the only such example of this). I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints. The major exception was the verbose variable which now uses OPT_INCR instead of OPT_BOOLEAN. Signed-off-by: Ian Munsie <imunsie@au.ibm.com> Acked-by: David S. 2010-01-21perf buildid-cache: Add new command to manage build-id cacheArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
For now it just has operations to examine a given file, find its build-id and add or remove it to/from the cache. Useful, for instance, when adding binaries sent together with a perf.data file, so that we can add them to the cache and have the tools find it when resolving symbols. It'll also manage the size of the cache like 'ccache' does.
