Saffire Pro i/o series For Focusrite Saffire Pro i/o, the lowest 8 bits of register represents configured source of sampling clock. The next lowest 8 bits represents whether the configured source is actually detected or not just after the register is changed for the source. Current implementation evaluates whole the register to detect configured source. This results in failure due to the next lowest 8 bits when the source is connected in advance. This commit fixes the bug. 2019-11-02ALSA: bebob: link the order of establishing connections and Syt-match clock modeTakashi Sakamoto
Originally BeBeB ASICs and firmware supports clock mode to synchronizing to syt field of received isoc packet. This mode is known as 'SYT Match' slightly described in IEC 61883-6 (but no detail mechanisms). In this mode, drivers can control sampling clock in device. Driver for Windows and macOS uses this feature to perform synchronization for devices on the same bus. In this mode, a plug of Music subunit for synchronization is connected to a plug of isoc unit for incoming packet streaming, then the order to establish connections is INPUT_PLUG first, OUTPUT_PLUG second. This commit implements the above. Actually each device works with its own clock for sampling, therefore the original design is hardly implemented to vendor's products. 2019-11-02ALSA: bebob: expand delay of start for IR context just for version 3 firmwareTakashi Sakamoto
As long as I investigated, there's some cases about the delay for device between establishing OUTPUT_PLUG and transmitting first isoc packet. For devices which support BeBoB protocol version 1 can transmit the packet within several hundred milliseconds, while for devices which support BeBoB protocol version 3 can transmit the packet within 2 seconds. Devices with protocol version 1: * Edirol FA-66 * Yamaha GO46 * Terratec Phase x24 FW * M-Audio FireWire AudioPhile * M-Audio FireWire Solo * M-Audio FireWire 1814 * M-Audio FireWire 410 * Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 I/O Devices with protocol version 3: * M-Audio Profire Lightbridge * Behringer FCA610 * Phonic Firefly 202 At present ALSA bebob driver postpones starting IR context during 1.5 sec for all of supported devices. The delay is too long for devices with protocol version 1, while it's not enough for devices with protocol version 3. This commit improves the delay for these protocols. 2019-11-02ALSA: bebob: expand sleep just after breaking connections for protocol version 1Takashi Sakamoto
As long as I investigated, some devices with BeBoB protocol version 1 can be freezed during several hundreds milliseconds after breaking connections. When accessing during the freezed time, any transaction is corrupted. In the worst case, the device is going to reboot. I can see this issue in: * Roland FA-66 * M-Audio FireWire Solo This commit expands sleep just after breaking connections to avoid the freezed time as much as possible. I note that the freeze/reboot behaviour is similar to below models: * Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 I/O * Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 I/O The above models certainly reboot after breaking connections. 2019-10-19ALSA: firewire-lib: postpone to start IR contextTakashi Sakamoto
Some devices have a quirk to postpone transmission of isoc packet for several dozen or hundred isoc cycles since configured to transmit. Furthermore, some devices have a quirk to transmit isoc packet with discontinued data of its header. In 1394 OHCI specification, software allows to start isoc context with certain isoc cycle. Linux firewire subsystem has kernel API to use it as well. This commit uses the functionality of 1394 OHCI controller to handle the quirks. At present, this feature is convenient to ALSA bebob and fireface driver. When AMDTP domain starts for one of the PCM substream, buffer size of the PCM substream is stores to AMDTP domain structure. Some AMDTP streams have already run with the buffer size when another PCM substream starts, therefore the PCM substream has a constraint to its buffer size. fixed size The number of packets in packet buffer has been fixed number (=48) since first commit of ALSA IEC 61883-1/6 packet streaming engine. This commit allows the engine to use variable number of packets in the buffer. The size is calculated by a parameter in AMDTP domain structure surely to store the number of events in the packets of buffer. Although the value of parameter is expected to come from 'period size' parameter of PCM substream, at present 48 is still used. 2019-10-17ALSA: bebob: use the same size of period for PCM substream in AMDTP streamsTakashi Sakamoto
In current implementation, when opening a PCM substream, it's needed to check whether the opposite PCM substream runs. This is to assign effectual constraints (e.g. sampling rate) to opened PCM substream. The number of PCM substreams and MIDI substreams on AMDTP streams in domain is recorded in own structure. Usage of this count is an alternative of the above check. This is better because the count is incremented in pcm.hw_params earlier than pcm.trigger. This idea has one issue because it's incremented for MIDI substreams as well. In current implementation, for a case that any MIDI substream run and a PCM substream is going to start, PCM application to start the PCM substream can decide hardware parameters by restart packet streaming. Just checking the substream count can brings regression. Now AMDTP domain structure has a member for the size of PCM period in PCM substream which starts AMDTP streams in domain. When the value has zero and the substream count is greater than 1, it means that any MIDI substream starts AMDTP streams in domain. Usage of the value can resolve the above issue. This commit replaces the check with the substream count and the value for the size of PCM period. path of rawmidi interface In IEC 61883-6, several types of sampling data can be multiplexed into payload of common isochronous packet (CIP). For typical audio and music units, PCM samples and MIDI messages are multiplexed into one packet streaming. ALSA bebob driver allows applications of rawmidi interface to start packet streaming for transmission of MIDI messages. However at error path, the reference count of stream functionality is not operated correctly. This can brings a bug that packet streaming is not stopped when all referrers release the count. This commit fixes the bug. This commit splits allocation of isochronous resources from establishment of connection so that CMP runs with allocated isochronous resources. Liquid Saffire 56 ALSA bebob driver has an entry for Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 I/O. The entry matches vendor_id in root directory and model_id in unit directory of configuration ROM for IEEE 1394 bus. On the other hand, configuration ROM of Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 has the same vendor_id and model_id. This device is an application of TCAT Dice (TCD2220 a.k.a Dice Jr.) however ALSA bebob driver can be bound to it randomly instead of ALSA dice driver. 2018-12-19ALSA: bebob: fix model-id of unit for Apogee EnsembleTakashi Sakamoto
This commit fixes hard-coded model-id for an unit of Apogee Ensemble with a correct value. This unit uses DM1500 ASIC produced ArchWave AG (formerly known as BridgeCo AG). I note that this model supports three modes in the number of data channels in tx/rx streams; 8 ch pairs, 10 ch pairs, 18 ch pairs. For consistency of behaviour for whole drivers, this probably confuses users. This commit takes drivers in ALSA firewire stack to imitate the above behaviour. At present, private data of each driver in ALSA firewire stack is allocated/freed by kernel slab allocator for corresponding unit on IEEE 1394 bus. In this case, resource-managed slab allocator is available to release memory object automatically just before releasing device structure for the unit. This idea can prevent runtime from memory leak due to programming mistakes. This commit uses the allocator for the private data. These drivers already use reference counter to maintain lifetime of device structure for the unit by a pair of fw_unit_get()/fw_unit_put(). streaming DMA mapping When executing 'fw_run_transaction()' with 'TCODE_WRITE_BLOCK_REQUEST', an address of 'payload' argument is used for streaming DMA mapping by 'firewire_ohci' module if 'size' argument is larger than 8 byte. Although in this case the address should not be on kernel stack, current implementation of ALSA bebob driver uses data in kernel stack for a cue to boot M-Audio devices. This often brings unexpected result, especially for a case of CONFIG_VMAP_STACK=y. This commit fixes the bug. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. In recent commit for ALSA PCM core, some arrangement is done for 'struct snd_pcm_ops.ack' callback. This is called when appl_ptr is explicitly moved in intermediate buffer for PCM frames, except for some cases described later. For drivers in ALSA firewire stack, usage of this callback has a merit to reduce latency between time of PCM frame queueing and handling actual packets in recent isochronous cycle, because no need to wait for software IRQ context from isochronous context of OHCI 1394. If this works well in a case that mapped page frame is used for the intermediate buffer, user process should execute some commands for ioctl(2) to tell the number of handled PCM frames in the intermediate buffer just after handling them. Therefore, at present, with a combination of below conditions, this doesn't work as expected and user process should wait for the software IRQ context as usual: - when ALSA PCM core judges page frame mapping is available for status data (struct snd_pcm_mmap_status) and control data (struct snd_pcm_mmap_control). - user process handles PCM frames by loop just with 'snd_pcm_mmap_begin()' and 'snd_pcm_mmap_commit()'. - user process uses PCM hw plugin in alsa-lib to operate I/O without 'sync_ptr_ioctl' option.
