2018-02-11vfs: do bulk POLL* -> EPOLL* replacementLinus Torvalds
This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL* variables as described by Al, done by this script: for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'` for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done done with de-mangling cleanups yet to come. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we should be all done. Scripted-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull poll annotations from Al Viro: "This introduces a __bitwise type for POLL### bitmap, and propagates the annotations through the tree. Most of that stuff is as simple as 'make ->poll() instances return __poll_t and do the same to local variables used to hold the future return value'. Some of the obvious brainos found in process are fixed (e.g. POLLIN misspelled as POLL_IN). At that point the amount of sparse warnings is low and most of them are for genuine bugs - e.g. ->poll() instance deciding to return -EINVAL instead of a bitmap. I hadn't touched those in this series - it's large enough as it is. Another problem it has caught was eventpoll() ABI mess; select.c and eventpoll.c assumed that corresponding POLL### and EPOLL### were equal. That's true for some, but not all of them - EPOLL### are arch-independent, but POLL### are not. The last commit in this series separates userland POLL### values from the (now arch-independent) kernel-side ones, converting between them in the few places where they are copied to/from userland. AFAICS, this is the least disruptive fix preserving poll(2) ABI and making epoll() work on all architectures. As it is, it's simply broken on sparc - try to give it EPOLLWRNORM and it will trigger only on what would've triggered EPOLLWRBAND on other architectures. EPOLLWRBAND and EPOLLRDHUP, OTOH, are never triggered at all on sparc. With this patch they should work consistently on all architectures" * 'misc.poll' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (37 commits) make kernel-side POLL... arch-independent eventpoll: no need to mask the result of epi_item_poll() again eventpoll: constify struct epoll_event pointers debugging printk in sg_poll() uses %x to print POLL... bitmap annotate poll(2) guts 9p: untangle ->poll() mess ->si_band gets POLL... bitmap stored into a user-visible long field ring_buffer_poll_wait() return value used as return value of ->poll() the rest of drivers/*: annotate ->poll() instances media: annotate ->poll() instances fs: annotate ->poll() instances ipc, kernel, mm: annotate ->poll() instances net: annotate ->poll() instances apparmor: annotate ->poll() instances tomoyo: annotate ->poll() instances sound: annotate ->poll() instances acpi: annotate ->poll() instances crypto: annotate ->poll() instances block: annotate ->poll() instances x86: annotate ->poll() instances ...
2017-12-14ALSA: rawmidi: Avoid racy info ioctl via ctl deviceTakashi Iwai
The rawmidi also allows to obtaining the information via ioctl of ctl API. It means that user can issue an ioctl to the rawmidi device even when it's being removed as long as the control device is present. Although the code has some protection via the global register_mutex, its range is limited to the search of the corresponding rawmidi object, and the mutex is already unlocked at accessing the rawmidi object. This may lead to a use-after-free. For avoiding it, this patch widens the application of register_mutex to the whole snd_rawmidi_info_select() function. We have another mutex per rawmidi object, but this operation isn't very hot path, so it shouldn't matter from the performance POV. 2017-06-20sched/wait: Rename wait_queue_t => wait_queue_entry_tIngo Molnar
Rename: wait_queue_t => wait_queue_entry_t 'wait_queue_t' was always a slight misnomer: its name implies that it's a "queue", but in reality it's a queue *entry*. The 'real' queue is the wait queue head, which had to carry the name. Start sorting this out by renaming it to 'wait_queue_entry_t'. This also allows the real structure name 'struct __wait_queue' to lose its double underscore and become 'struct wait_queue_entry', which is the more canonical nomenclature for such data types. 2017-06-12ALSA: seq: Allow the modular sequencer registrationTakashi Iwai
Many drivers bind the sequencer stuff in off-load by another driver module, so that it's loaded only on demand. In the current code, this mechanism doesn't work when the driver is built-in while the sequencer is module. We check with IS_REACHABLE() and enable only when the sequencer is in the same level of build. However, this is basically a overshoot. The binder code (snd-seq-device) is an individual module from the sequencer core (snd-seq), and we just have to make the former a built-in while keeping the latter a module for allowing the scenario like the above. This patch achieves that by rewriting Kconfig slightly. Now, a driver that provides the manual sequencer device binding should select CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DEVICE in a way as select SND_SEQ_DEVICE if SND_SEQUENCER != n Note that the "!=n" is needed here to avoid the influence of the sequencer core is module while the driver is built-in. Also, since rawmidi.o may be linked with snd_seq_device.o when built-in, we have to shuffle the code to make the linker happy. (the kernel linker isn't smart enough yet to handle such a case.) That is, snd_seq_device.c is moved to sound/core from sound/core/seq, as well as Makefile. Last but not least, the patch replaces the code using IS_REACHABLE() with IS_ENABLED(), since now the condition meets always when enabled. Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>

2016-09-08ALSA: rawmidi: Fix possible deadlock with virmidi registrationTakashi Iwai
When a seq-virmidi driver is initialized, it registers a rawmidi instance with its callback to create an associated seq kernel client. Currently it's done throughly in rawmidi's register_mutex context. Recently it was found that this may lead to a deadlock another rawmidi device that is being attached with the sequencer is accessed, as both open with the same register_mutex. 2016-02-03ALSA: rawmidi: Fix race at copying & updating the positionTakashi Iwai
The rawmidi read and write functions manage runtime stream status such as runtime->appl_ptr and runtime->avail. These point where to copy the new data and how many bytes have been copied (or to be read). The problem is that rawmidi read/write call copy_from_user() or copy_to_user(), and the runtime spinlock is temporarily unlocked and relocked while copying user-space. Since the current code advances and updates the runtime status after the spin unlock/relock, the copy and the update may be asynchronous, and eventually runtime->avail might go to a negative value when many concurrent accesses are done. This may lead to memory corruption in the end. For fixing this race, in this patch, the status update code is performed in the same lock before the temporary unlock. Also, the spinlock is now taken more widely in snd_rawmidi_kernel_read1() for protecting more properly during the whole operation. We may use snd_rawmidi_transmit() in a loop just for consuming the input data, but even there, there is a race between snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek() and snd_rawmidi_tranmit_ack(). Similarly in the latter case, it calls snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek() and snd_rawmidi_tranmit_ack() separately without protection, so they are racy as well. The patch tries to address these issues by the following ways: - Introduce the unlocked versions of snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek() and snd_rawmidi_transmit_ack() to be called inside the explicit lock. - Rewrite snd_rawmidi_transmit() to be race-free (the former case). - Make the split calls (the latter case) protected in the rawmidi spin lock. For more strict protection for wild disconnections, a refcount is introduced to the card instance, and let it up/down when an object is referred via snd_lookup_*() in the open ops. The free-after-last-close check is also changed to check this refcount instead of the empty list, too. 2010-10-17ALSA: rawmidi: fix oops (use after free) when unloading a driver moduleClemens Ladisch
When a driver module is unloaded and the last still open file is a raw MIDI device, the card and its devices will be actually freed in the snd_card_file_remove() call when that file is closed. Afterwards, rmidi and rmidi->card point into freed memory, so the module pointer is likely to be garbage. (This was introduced by commit 9a1b64caac82aa02cb74587ffc798e6f42c6170a.) 2010-09-09ALSA: rawmidi: fix the get next midi device ioctlDan Carpenter
If we pass in a device which is higher than SNDRV_RAWMIDI_DEVICES then the "next device" should be -1. This function just returns device + 1. But the main thing is that "device + 1" can lead to a (harmless) integer overflow and that annoys static analysis tools. 2009-12-10vfs: Implement proper O_SYNC semanticsChristoph Hellwig
While Linux provided an O_SYNC flag basically since day 1, it took until Linux 2.4.0-test12pre2 to actually get it implemented for filesystems, since that day we had generic_osync_around with only minor changes and the great "For now, when the user asks for O_SYNC, we'll actually give O_DSYNC" comment. This patch intends to actually give us real O_SYNC semantics in addition to the O_DSYNC semantics. After Jan's O_SYNC patches which are required before this patch it's actually surprisingly simple, we just need to figure out when to set the datasync flag to vfs_fsync_range and when not. This patch renames the existing O_SYNC flag to O_DSYNC while keeping it's numerical value to keep binary compatibility, and adds a new real O_SYNC flag. To guarantee backwards compatiblity it is defined as expanding to both the O_DSYNC and the new additional binary flag (__O_SYNC) to make sure we are backwards-compatible when compiled against the new headers. This also means that all places that don't care about the differences can just check O_DSYNC and get the right behaviour for O_SYNC, too - only places that actuall care need to check __O_SYNC in addition. Drivers and network filesystems have been updated in a fail safe way to always do the full sync magic if O_DSYNC is set. The few places setting O_SYNC for lower layers are kept that way for now to stay failsafe. We enforce that O_DSYNC is set when __O_SYNC is set early in the open path to make sure we always get these sane options. Note that parisc really screwed up their headers as they already define a O_DSYNC that has always been a no-op. We try to repair it by using it for the new O_DSYNC and redefinining O_SYNC to send both the traditional O_SYNC numerical value _and_ the O_DSYNC one. 2009-11-10sound: rawmidi: fix opened substreams countClemens Ladisch
The substream_opened field is to count the number of opened substreams, not the number of times that any substreams have been opened. Furthermore, all substreams being opened does not imply that the next open would fail, due to the possibility of O_APPEND. With this wrong check, opening a substream multiple times would succeed only if the device had more unopened substreams. 2009-11-10sound: rawmidi: fix MIDI device O_APPEND error handlingClemens Ladisch
Commit 9a1b64caac82aa02cb74587ffc798e6f42c6170a in 2.6.30 broke the error handling code in rawmidi_open_priv(). If only the output substream of a RawMIDI device has been opened and if this device is then opened with O_RDWR | O_APPEND and if the initialization of the input substream fails (either because of low memory or because the device driver's open callback fails), then the runtime structure of the already open output substream will be freed and all following writes through the first handle will cause snd_rawmidi_write() to use the NULL runtime pointer. 2009-11-10sound: rawmidi: fix checking of O_APPEND when opening MIDI deviceClemens Ladisch
Commit 9a1b64caac82aa02cb74587ffc798e6f42c6170a in 2.6.30 dropped the check that a substream must already have been opened with O_APPEND to be able to open it a second time. This would make it possible for a substream to be switched to append mode, which would mean that non-atomic writes would fail unexpectedly. 2009-11-10sound: rawmidi: fix double init when opening MIDI device with O_APPENDClemens Ladisch
Commit 9a1b64caac82aa02cb74587ffc798e6f42c6170a in 2.6.30 moved the substream initialization code to where it would be executed every time the substream is opened. This had the consequence that any further opening would drop and leak the data in the existing buffer, and that the device driver's open callback would be called multiple times, unexpectedly.
