2008-04-18include: Remove unnecessary inclusions of asm/semaphore.hMatthew Wilcox
None of these files use any of the functionality promised by asm/semaphore.h. It's possible that they (or some user of them) rely on it dragging in some unrelated header file, but I can't build all these files, so we'll have to fix any build failures as they come up. 2008-02-14[POWERPC] Fix arch/ppc compilation - add typedef for pgtable_tStefan Roese
Commit 2f569afd9ced9ebec9a6eb3dbf6f83429be0a7b4 ("CONFIG_HIGHPTE vs. sub-page page tables.") breaks compilation of arch/ppc since it introduces the pgtable_t type which was not added to arch/ppc. This adds the missing typedef. Signed-off-by: Stefan Roese <sr@denx.de> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2008-02-08CONFIG_HIGHPTE vs. sub-page page tables.Martin Schwidefsky
Background: I've implemented 1K/2K page tables for s390. These sub-page page tables are required to properly support the s390 virtualization instruction with KVM. The SIE instruction requires that the page tables have 256 page table entries (pte) followed by 256 page status table entries (pgste). The pgstes are only required if the process is using the SIE instruction. The pgstes are updated by the hardware and by the hypervisor for a number of reasons, one of them is dirty and reference bit tracking. To avoid wasting memory the standard pte table allocation should return 1K/2K (31/64 bit) and 2K/4K if the process is using SIE. Problem: Page size on s390 is 4K, page table size is 1K or 2K. That means the s390 version for pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a struct page. Trouble is that with the CONFIG_HIGHPTE feature on x86 pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a pte either, since that would require more than 32 bit for the return value of pte_alloc_one (and the pte * would not be accessible since its not kmapped). Solution: The only solution I found to this dilemma is a new typedef: a pgtable_t. For s390 pgtable_t will be a (pte *) - to be introduced with a later patch. For everybody else it will be a (struct page *). The additional problem with the initialization of the ptl lock and the NR_PAGETABLE accounting is solved with a constructor pgtable_page_ctor and a destructor pgtable_page_dtor. The page table allocation and free functions need to call these two whenever a page table page is allocated or freed. pmd_populate will get a pgtable_t instead of a struct page pointer. To get the pgtable_t back from a pmd entry that has been installed with pmd_populate a new function pmd_pgtable is added. It replaces the pmd_page call in free_pte_range and apply_to_pte_range. 2008-02-05add mm argument to pte/pmd/pud/pgd_freeBenjamin Herrenschmidt
(with Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com>) The pgd/pud/pmd/pte page table allocation functions get a mm_struct pointer as first argument. The free functions do not get the mm_struct argument. This is 1) asymmetrical and 2) to do mm related page table allocations the mm argument is needed on the free function as well. 2007-12-23[POWERPC] 4xx: Fix TLB 0 problem with CONFIG_SERIAL_TEXT_DEBUGStefan Roese
Right now TLB entry 0 ist used as UART0 mapping for the early debug output (via CONFIG_SERIAL_TEXT_DEBUG). This causes problems when many TLB's get used upon Linux bootup (e.g. while PCIe scanning behind bridges and/or switches on 440SPe platforms). This will overwrite the TLB 0 entry and further debug output's may crash/hang the system. This patch moves the early debug UART0 TLB entry from 0 to 62 as done in arch/powerpc. This way it is in the "pinned" area and will not get overwritten. Also the arch/ppc/mm/44x_mmu.c code is now synced with the newer code from arch/powerpc. 2007-12-23[POWERPC] Reworking machine check handling and Fix 440/440ABenjamin Herrenschmidt
This adds a cputable function pointer for the CPU-side machine check handling. The semantic is still the same as the old one, the one in ppc_md. overrides the one in cputable, though ultimately we'll want to change that so the CPU gets first. This removes CONFIG_440A which was a problem for multiplatform kernels and instead fixes up the IVOR at runtime from a setup_cpu function. The "A" version of the machine check also tweaks the regs->trap value to differenciate the 2 versions at the C level. 2007-10-22ppc: fix AT_VECTOR_SIZE on arch/ppcGrant Likely
Commit 4f9a58d75bfe82ab2b8ba5b8506dfb190a267834 ("increase AT_VECTOR_SIZE to terminate saved_auxv properly") changes the size of AT_VECTOR_SIZE from hard coded '44' to a calculation based on the value of AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH and AT_VECTOR_SIZE_BASE. The change works for arch/powerpc, but it breaks arch/ppc because the needed AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH is not present in include/asm-ppc/system.h and a default value of 0 is used instead. This results in AT_VECTOR_SIZE being too small and it causes a kernel crash on loading init. 2007-10-17Remove dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) functionsRalf Baechle
dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) were the earliest attempt on a generalized cache managment API for I/O purposes. Originally it was basically the raw MIPS low level cache API exported to the entire world. The API has suffered from a lack of documentation, was not very widely used unlike it's more modern brothers and can easily be replaced by dma_cache_sync. So remove it rsp. turn the surviving bits back into an arch private API, as discussed on linux-arch. Some changes done a while ago to avoid pounding on ptep_set_access_flags and update_mmu_cache in some race situations break sun4c which requires update_mmu_cache() to always be called on minor faults. This patch reworks ptep_set_access_flags() semantics, implementations and callers so that it's now responsible for returning whether an update is necessary or not (basically whether the PTE actually changed). 2007-05-09[POWERPC] Change rheap functions to use ulongs instead of pointersTimur Tabi
The rheap allocation functions return a pointer, but the actual value is based on how the heap was initialized, and so it can be anything, e.g. an offset into a buffer. A ulong is a better representation of the value returned by the allocation functions. This patch changes all of the relevant rheap functions to use a unsigned long integers instead of a pointer. In case of an error, the value returned is a negative error code that has been cast to an unsigned long. The caller can use the IS_ERR_VALUE() macro to check for this. All code which calls the rheap functions is updated accordingly. Macros IS_MURAM_ERR() and IS_DPERR(), have been deleted in favor of IS_ERR_VALUE(). Also added error checking to rh_attach_region(). 2007-05-08atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers
dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge
Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. 2007-04-30[POWERPC] Merge common virtex header filesGrant Likely
The header files for the ml403 and ml300 are virtually identical, merge them into a single file. Signed-off-by: Grant Likely <grant.likely@secretlab.ca> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2007-04-13[POWERPC] Rename get_property to of_get_propertyStephen Rothwell
This is more consistent and gets us closer to the Sparc code. We add a get_property define for compatibility during the change over. Signed-off-by: Stephen Rothwell <sfr@canb.auug.org.au> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2007-02-13[POWERPC] ppc: Add support for AMCC Taishan 440GX eval boardStefan Roese
This patch adds support for the AMCC Taishan PPC440GX evaluation board. This is still an arch/ppc port. I'm aware that the move of 4xx to arch/powerpc is making good progress right now. So this patch is mainly intended to make the Taishan support available for the community right now. Signed-off-by: Stefan Roese <sr@denx.de> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2007-02-09[PATCH] kill eth_io_copy_and_sum()Al Viro
On all targets that sucker boils down to memcpy_fromio(sbk->data, from, len). The function name is highly misguiding (it _never_ does any checksums), the last argument is just a noise and simply expanding the call to memcpy_fromio() gives shorter and more readable source. For a lot of reasons it has almost no remaining users, so it's better to just outright kill it.
