2007-07-16serial: convert early_uart to earlycon for 8250Yinghai Lu
Beacuse SERIAL_PORT_DFNS is removed from include/asm-i386/serial.h and include/asm-x86_64/serial.h. the serial8250_ports need to be probed late in serial initializing stage. the console_init=>serial8250_console_init=> register_console=>serial8250_console_setup will return -ENDEV, and console ttyS0 can not be enabled at that time. need to wait till uart_add_one_port in drivers/serial/serial_core.c to call register_console to get console ttyS0. that is too late. Make early_uart to use early_param, so uart console can be used earlier. Make it to be bootconsole with CON_BOOT flag, so can use console handover feature. and it will switch to corresponding normal serial console automatically. new command line will be: console=uart8250,io,0x3f8,9600n8 console=uart8250,mmio,0xff5e0000,115200n8 or earlycon=uart8250,io,0x3f8,9600n8 earlycon=uart8250,mmio,0xff5e0000,115200n8 it will print in very early stage: Early serial console at I/O port 0x3f8 (options '9600n8') console [uart0] enabled later for console it will print: console handover: boot [uart0] -> real [ttyS0] Signed-off-by: <yinghai.lu@sun.com> Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Cc: Bjorn Helgaas <bjorn.helgaas@hp.com> Cc: Russell King <rmk@arm.linux.org.uk> Cc: Gerd Hoffmann <kraxel@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-05-02[PATCH] i386: rationalize paravirt wrappersRusty Russell
paravirt.c used to implement native versions of all low-level functions. Far cleaner is to have the native versions exposed in the headers and as inline native_XXX, and if !CONFIG_PARAVIRT, then simply #define XXX native_XXX. There are several nice side effects: 1) write_dt_entry() now takes the correct "struct Xgt_desc_struct *" not "void *". 2) load_TLS is reintroduced to the for loop, not manually unrolled with a #error in case the bounds ever change. 3) Macros become inlines, with type checking. 4) Access to the native versions is trivial for KVM, lguest, Xen and others who might want it. 2007-02-09[PATCH] kill eth_io_copy_and_sum()Al Viro
On all targets that sucker boils down to memcpy_fromio(sbk->data, from, len). The function name is highly misguiding (it _never_ does any checksums), the last argument is just a noise and simply expanding the call to memcpy_fromio() gives shorter and more readable source. For a lot of reasons it has almost no remaining users, so it's better to just outright kill it. 2006-12-07[PATCH] paravirt: header and stubs for paravirtualisationRusty Russell
Create a paravirt.h header for all the critical operations which need to be replaced with hypervisor calls, and include that instead of defining native operations, when CONFIG_PARAVIRT. This patch does the dumbest possible replacement of paravirtualized instructions: calls through a "paravirt_ops" structure. Currently these are function implementations of native hardware: hypervisors will override the ops structure with their own variants. All the pv-ops functions are declared "fastcall" so that a specific register-based ABI is used, to make inlining assember easier. And: +From: Andy Whitcroft <apw@shadowen.org> The paravirt ops introduce a 'weak' attribute onto memory_setup(). Code ordering leads to the following warnings on x86: arch/i386/kernel/setup.c:651: warning: weak declaration of `memory_setup' after first use results in unspecified behavior Move memory_setup() to avoid this. 2006-10-11[PATCH] Consolidate check_signatureMatthew Wilcox
There's nothing arch-specific about check_signature(), so move it to <linux/io.h>. Use a cross between the Alpha and i386 implementations as the generic one. 2006-01-11[PATCH] x86_64: Generalize DMI and enable for x86-64Andi Kleen
Some people need it now on 64bit so reuse the i386 code for x86-64. This will be also useful for future bug workarounds. It is a bit simplified there because there is no need to do it very early on x86-64. This means it doesn't need early ioremap et.al. We run it as a core initcall right now. I hope it's not needed for early setup. I added a general CONFIG_DMI symbol in case IA64 or someone else wants to reuse the code later too. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
