2021-04-21thermal/drivers/ti-soc-thermal/bandgap Remove unused variable 'val'Lin Ruizhe
The function ti_bandgap_restore_ctxt() restores the context at resume time. It checks if the sensor has a counter, reads the register but does nothing with the value. The block was probably omitted by the commit b87ea759a4cc. Remove the unused variable as well as the block using it as we can consider it as dead code. 2021-02-15thermal: ti-soc-thermal: Simplify polling with iopollTony Lindgren
We can use iopoll for checking the EOCZ (end of conversion) bit. And with this we now also want to handle the timeout errors properly. For omap3, we need about 1.2ms for the single mode sampling to wait for EOCZ down, so let's use 1.5ms timeout there. Waiting for sampling to start is faster and we can use 1ms timeout. 2021-02-15thermal: ti-soc-thermal: Fix stuck sensor with continuous mode for 4430Tony Lindgren
At least for 4430, trying to use the single conversion mode eventually hangs the thermal sensor. This can be quite easily seen with errors: thermal thermal_zone0: failed to read out thermal zone (-5) Also, trying to read the temperature shows a stuck value with: $ while true; do cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp; done Where the temperature is not rising at all with the busy loop. Additionally, the EOCZ (end of conversion) bit is not rising on 4430 in single conversion mode while it works fine in continuous conversion mode. It is also possible that the hung temperature sensor can affect the thermal shutdown alert too. Let's fix the issue by adding TI_BANDGAP_FEATURE_CONT_MODE_ONLY flag and use it for 4430. Note that we also need to add udelay to for the EOCZ (end of conversion) bit polling as otherwise we have it time out too early on 4430. We'll be changing the loop to use iopoll in the following clean-up patch. 2021-02-15thermal: ti-soc-thermal: Skip pointless register access for dra7Tony Lindgren
On dra7, there is no Start of Conversion (SOC) register bit and we have an empty bgap_soc_mask in the configuration for the thermal driver. Let's not do pointless reads and writes with the empty mask. There's also no point waiting for End of Conversion bit (EOCZ) to go high on dra7. We only care about it going down, and are now mostly timing out waiting for EOCZ high while it has already gone down. When we add checking for the timeout errors in a later patch, waiting for EOCZ high would cause bogus time out errors. 2020-09-04thermal: ti-soc-thermal: Fix bogus thermal shutdowns for omap4430Tony Lindgren
We can sometimes get bogus thermal shutdowns on omap4430 at least with droid4 running idle with a battery charger connected: thermal thermal_zone0: critical temperature reached (143 C), shutting down Dumping out the register values shows we can occasionally get a 0x7f value that is outside the TRM listed values in the ADC conversion table. And then we get a normal value when reading again after that. Reading the register multiple times does not seem help avoiding the bogus values as they stay until the next sample is ready. Looking at the TRM chapter "18.4.10.2.3 ADC Codes Versus Temperature", we should have values from 13 to 107 listed with a total of 95 values. But looking at the omap4430_adc_to_temp array, the values are off, and the end values are missing. And it seems that the 4430 ADC table is similar to omap3630 rather than omap4460. Let's fix the issue by using values based on the omap3630 table and just ignoring invalid values. Compared to the 4430 TRM, the omap3630 table has the missing values added while the TRM table only shows every second value. Note that sometimes the ADC register values within the valid table can also be way off for about 1 out of 10 values. But it seems that those just show about 25 C too low values rather than too high values. So those do not cause a bogus thermal shutdown. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-05-27thermal: cpu_cooling: use cpufreq_policy to register cooling deviceViresh Kumar
The CPU cooling driver uses the cpufreq policy, to get clip_cpus, the frequency table, etc. Most of the callers of CPU cooling driver's registration routines have the cpufreq policy with them, but they only pass the policy->related_cpus cpumask. The __cpufreq_cooling_register() routine then gets the policy by itself and uses it. It would be much better if the callers can pass the policy instead directly. This also fixes a basic design flaw, where the policy can be freed while the CPU cooling driver is still active. 2017-02-18thermal: ti-soc-thermal: Remove CPU_THERMAL Dependency from TI_THERMALKeerthy
Currently when CPU_THERMAL is not defined the thermal sensors are not even exposed consequently no cooling is possible. CPU_THERMAL eventually depends on CPUFREQ. CPPUFREQ is not the only cooling for CPU. The thermal shutdown for critical temperatures is another cooling solution which will currently not get enabled if CPU_THERMAL is not defined. Remove this dependency so as to have the last level of thermal protection working even without CPUFREQ defined. 2016-09-27thermal: Enhance thermal_zone_device_update for eventsSrinivas Pandruvada
Added one additional parameter to thermal_zone_device_update() to provide caller with an optional capability to specify reason. Currently this event is used by user space governor to trigger different processing based on event code. Also it saves an additional call to read temperature when the event is received. The following events are cuurently defined: - Unspecified event - New temperature sample - Trip point violated - Trip point changed - thermal device up and down - thermal device power capability changed Signed-off-by: Srinivas Pandruvada <srinivas.pandruvada@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Zhang Rui <rui.zhang@intel.com>
2016-09-27thermal: streamline get_trend callbacksSascha Hauer
The .get_trend callback in struct thermal_zone_device_ops has the prototype: int (*get_trend) (struct thermal_zone_device *, int, enum thermal_trend *); whereas the .get_trend callback in struct thermal_zone_of_device_ops has: int (*get_trend)(void *, long *); Streamline both prototypes and add the trip argument to the OF callback aswell and use enum thermal_trend * instead of an integer pointer. While the OF prototype may be the better one, this should be decided at framework level and not on OF level. 2015-08-03thermal: consistently use int for temperaturesSascha Hauer
The thermal code uses int, long and unsigned long for temperatures in different places. Using an unsigned type limits the thermal framework to positive temperatures without need. Also several drivers currently will report temperatures near UINT_MAX for temperatures below 0°C. This will probably immediately shut the machine down due to overtemperature if started below 0°C. 'long' is 64bit on several architectures. This is not needed since INT_MAX °mC is above the melting point of all known materials. Consistently use a plain 'int' for temperatures throughout the thermal code and the drivers. This only changes the places in the drivers where the temperature is passed around as pointer, when drivers internally use another type this is not changed. 2015-05-08thermal: ti-soc-thermal: OMAP5: Implement Workaround for Errata i813Keerthy
DESCRIPTION Spurious Thermal Alert: Talert can happen randomly while the device remains under the temperature limit defined for this event to trig. This spurious event is caused by a incorrect re-synchronization between clock domains. The comparison between configured threshold and current temperature value can happen while the value is transitioning (metastable), thus causing inappropriate event generation. No spurious event occurs as long as the threshold value stays unchanged. Spurious event can be generated while a thermal alert threshold is modified in CONTROL_BANDGAP_THRESHOLD_MPU/GPU/CORE/DSPEVE/IVA_n. WORKAROUND Spurious event generation can be avoided by performing following sequence when the threshold is modified: 1. Mask the hot/cold events at the thermal IP level. 2. Modify Threshold. 3. Unmask the hot/cold events at the thermal IP level. Signed-off-by: Keerthy <j-keerthy@ti.com> Signed-off-by: Eduardo Valentin <edubezval@gmail.com>
2015-05-08thermal: ti-soc-thermal: dra7: Implement Workaround for Errata i814Keerthy
Bandgap Temperature read Dtemp can be corrupted DESCRIPTION Read accesses to registers listed below can be corrupted due to incorrect resynchronization between clock domains. Read access to registers below can be corrupted : • CTRL_CORE_DTEMP_MPU/GPU/CORE/DSPEVE/IVA_n (n = 0 to 4) • CTRL_CORE_TEMP_SENSOR_MPU/GPU/CORE/DSPEVE/IVA_n WORKAROUND Multiple reads to CTRL_CORE_TEMP_SENSOR_MPU/GPU/CORE/DSPEVE/IVA[9:0]: BGAP_DTEMPMPU/GPU/CORE/DSPEVE/IVA is needed to discard false value and read right value: 1. Perform two successive reads to BGAP_DTEMP bit field. (a) If read1 returns Val1 and read2 returns Val1, then right value is Val1. (b) If read1 returns Val1, read 2 returns Val2, a third read is needed. 2. Perform third read (a) If read3 returns Val2 then right value is Val2. (b) If read3 returns Val3, then right value is Val3. The above in gist means if val1 and val2 are the same then we can go ahead with that value else we need a third read which will be right since synchronization will be complete by then.
