git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams: - Replace pcommit with ADR / directed-flushing. The pcommit instruction, which has not shipped on any product, is deprecated. Instead, the requirement is that platforms implement either ADR, or provide one or more flush addresses per nvdimm. ADR (Asynchronous DRAM Refresh) flushes data in posted write buffers to the memory controller on a power-fail event. Flush addresses are defined in ACPI 6.x as an NVDIMM Firmware Interface Table (NFIT) sub-structure: "Flush Hint Address Structure". A flush hint is an mmio address that when written and fenced assures that all previous posted writes targeting a given dimm have been flushed to media. - On-demand ARS (address range scrub). Linux uses the results of the ACPI ARS commands to track bad blocks in pmem devices. When latent errors are detected we re-scrub the media to refresh the bad block list, userspace can also request a re-scrub at any time. - Support for the Microsoft DSM (device specific method) command format. - Support for EDK2/OVMF virtual disk device memory ranges. - Various fixes and cleanups across the subsystem. * tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.8' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm: (41 commits) libnvdimm-btt: Delete an unnecessary check before the function call "__nd_device_register" nfit: do an ARS scrub on hitting a latent media error nfit: move to nfit/ sub-directory nfit, libnvdimm: allow an ARS scrub to be triggered on demand libnvdimm: register nvdimm_bus devices with an nd_bus driver pmem: clarify a debug print in pmem_clear_poison x86/insn: remove pcommit Revert "KVM: x86: add pcommit support" nfit, tools/testing/nvdimm/: unify shutdown paths libnvdimm: move ->module to struct nvdimm_bus_descriptor nfit: cleanup acpi_nfit_init calling convention nfit: fix _FIT evaluation memory leak + use after free tools/testing/nvdimm: add manufacturing_{date|location} dimm properties tools/testing/nvdimm: add virtual ramdisk range acpi, nfit: treat virtual ramdisk SPA as pmem region pmem: kill __pmem address space pmem: kill wmb_pmem() libnvdimm, pmem: use nvdimm_flush() for namespace I/O writes fs/dax: remove wmb_pmem() libnvdimm, pmem: flush posted-write queues on shutdown ...

2016-07-20block: add QUEUE_FLAG_DAX for devices to advertise their DAX supportToshi Kani
Currently, presence of direct_access() in block_device_operations indicates support of DAX on its block device. Because block_device_operations is instantiated with 'const', this DAX capablity may not be enabled conditinally. In preparation for supporting DAX to device-mapper devices, add QUEUE_FLAG_DAX to request_queue flags to advertise their DAX support. This will allow to set the DAX capability based on how mapped device is composed. 2016-04-15s390/dcssblk: fix possible deadlock in remove vs. per-device attributesGerald Schaefer
dcssblk_remove_store() holds the dcssblk_devices_sem semaphore while calling device_unregister(), which in turn tries to acquire the kernfs kn->dev_map rwsem for the device sysfs subtree. The same rwsem is also acquired when using the per-device sysfs attributes in the device sub-tree, and the attribute handlers then also acquire the dcssblk_devices_sem. This can lead to a deadlock when removing a DCSS while concurrently reading from / writing to one of its sysfs attributes. The following lockdep warning hinted towards the issue (CPU0 = dcssblk_remove_store, CPU1 = dcssblk_shared_store): [ 76.496047] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 76.496054] CPU0 CPU1 [ 76.496059] ---- ---- [ 76.496087] lock(&dcssblk_devices_sem); [ 76.496090] lock(s_active#175); [ 76.496106] lock(&dcssblk_devices_sem); [ 76.496110] lock(s_active#175); [ 76.496115] *** DEADLOCK *** Fix this by releasing the dcssblk_devices_sem semaphore, which only protects internal DCSS data, before calling device_unregister(). 2016-01-15mm, dax, pmem: introduce pfn_tDan Williams
For the purpose of communicating the optional presence of a 'struct page' for the pfn returned from ->direct_access(), introduce a type that encapsulates a page-frame-number plus flags. These flags contain the historical "page_link" encoding for a scatterlist entry, but can also denote "device memory". Where "device memory" is a set of pfns that are not part of the kernel's linear mapping by default, but are accessed via the same memory controller as ram. The motivation for this new type is large capacity persistent memory that needs struct page entries in the 'memmap' to support 3rd party DMA (i.e. O_DIRECT I/O with a persistent memory source/target). However, we also need it in support of maintaining a list of mapped inodes which need to be unmapped at driver teardown or freeze_bdev() time. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams: "This update has successfully completed a 0day-kbuild run and has appeared in a linux-next release. The changes outside of the typical drivers/nvdimm/ and drivers/acpi/nfit.[ch] paths are related to the removal of IORESOURCE_CACHEABLE, the introduction of memremap(), and the introduction of ZONE_DEVICE + devm_memremap_pages(). Summary: - Introduce ZONE_DEVICE and devm_memremap_pages() as a generic mechanism for adding device-driver-discovered memory regions to the kernel's direct map. This facility is used by the pmem driver to enable pfn_to_page() operations on the page frames returned by DAX ('direct_access' in 'struct block_device_operations'). For now, the 'memmap' allocation for these "device" pages comes from "System RAM". Support for allocating the memmap from device memory will arrive in a later kernel. - Introduce memremap() to replace usages of ioremap_cache() and ioremap_wt(). memremap() drops the __iomem annotation for these mappings to memory that do not have i/o side effects. The replacement of ioremap_cache() with memremap() is limited to the pmem driver to ease merging the api change in v4.3. Completion of the conversion is targeted for v4.4. - Similar to the usage of memcpy_to_pmem() + wmb_pmem() in the pmem driver, update the VFS DAX implementation and PMEM api to provide persistence guarantees for kernel operations on a DAX mapping. - Convert the ACPI NFIT 'BLK' driver to map the block apertures as cacheable to improve performance. - Miscellaneous updates and fixes to libnvdimm including support for issuing "address range scrub" commands, clarifying the optimal 'sector size' of pmem devices, a clarification of the usage of the ACPI '_STA' (status) property for DIMM devices, and other minor fixes" * tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm: (34 commits) libnvdimm, pmem: direct map legacy pmem by default libnvdimm, pmem: 'struct page' for pmem libnvdimm, pfn: 'struct page' provider infrastructure x86, pmem: clarify that ARCH_HAS_PMEM_API implies PMEM mapped WB add devm_memremap_pages mm: ZONE_DEVICE for "device memory" mm: move __phys_to_pfn and __pfn_to_phys to asm/generic/memory_model.h dax: drop size parameter to ->direct_access() nd_blk: change aperture mapping from WC to WB nvdimm: change to use generic kvfree() pmem, dax: have direct_access use __pmem annotation dax: update I/O path to do proper PMEM flushing pmem: add copy_from_iter_pmem() and clear_pmem() pmem, x86: clean up conditional pmem includes pmem: remove layer when calling arch_has_wmb_pmem() pmem, x86: move x86 PMEM API to new pmem.h header libnvdimm, e820: make CONFIG_X86_PMEM_LEGACY a tristate option pmem: switch to devm_ allocations devres: add devm_memremap libnvdimm, btt: write and validate parent_uuid ...

This caused performance regressions in various tests. Reinstate the limit, bump it to a more reasonable size instead. - Make /sys/block/<dev>/queue/discard_max_bytes writeable, by me. Most devices have huge trim limits, which can cause nasty latencies when deleting files. Enable the admin to configure the size down. We will look into having a more sane default instead of UINT_MAX sectors. - Improvement of the SGP gaps logic from Keith Busch. - Enable the block core to handle arbitrarily sized bios, which enables a nice simplification of bio_add_page() (which is an IO hot path). 2015-08-13block: make generic_make_request handle arbitrarily sized biosKent Overstreet
The way the block layer is currently written, it goes to great lengths to avoid having to split bios; upper layer code (such as bio_add_page()) checks what the underlying device can handle and tries to always create bios that don't need to be split. But this approach becomes unwieldy and eventually breaks down with stacked devices and devices with dynamic limits, and it adds a lot of complexity. If the block layer could split bios as needed, we could eliminate a lot of complexity elsewhere - particularly in stacked drivers. Code that creates bios can then create whatever size bios are convenient, and more importantly stacked drivers don't have to deal with both their own bio size limitations and the limitations of the (potentially multiple) devices underneath them. In the future this will let us delete merge_bvec_fn and a bunch of other code. We do this by adding calls to blk_queue_split() to the various make_request functions that need it - a few can already handle arbitrary size bios. Note that we add the call _after_ any call to blk_queue_bounce(); this means that blk_queue_split() and blk_recalc_rq_segments() don't need to be concerned with bouncing affecting segment merging. Some make_request_fn() callbacks were simple enough to audit and verify they don't need blk_queue_split() calls. The skipped ones are: * nfhd_make_request (arch/m68k/emu/nfblock.c) * axon_ram_make_request (arch/powerpc/sysdev/axonram.c) * simdisk_make_request (arch/xtensa/platforms/iss/simdisk.c) * brd_make_request (ramdisk - drivers/block/brd.c) * mtip_submit_request (drivers/block/mtip32xx/mtip32xx.c) * loop_make_request * null_queue_bio * bcache's make_request fns Some others are almost certainly safe to remove now, but will be left for future patches. 2015-07-29block: add a bi_error field to struct bioChristoph Hellwig
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up. 2014-02-07s390: use device_remove_file_self() instead of device_schedule_callback()Tejun Heo
driver-core now supports synchrnous self-deletion of attributes and the asynchrnous removal mechanism is scheduled for removal. Use it instead of device_schedule_callback(). * Conversions in arch/s390/pci/pci_sysfs.c and drivers/s390/block/dcssblk.c are straightforward. * drivers/s390/cio/ccwgroup.c is a bit more tricky because ccwgroup_notifier() was (ab)using device_schedule_callback() to purely obtain a process context to kick off ungroup operation which may block from a notifier callback. Rename ccwgroup_ungroup_callback() to ccwgroup_ungroup() and make it take ccwgroup_device * instead. The new function is now called directly from ccwgroup_ungroup_store(). ccwgroup_notifier() chain is updated to explicitly bounce through ccwgroup_device->ungroup_work. This also removes possible failure from memory pressure. Only compile-tested. More prep work for immutable biovecs - with immutable bvecs drivers won't be able to use the biovec directly, they'll need to use helpers that take into account bio->bi_iter.bi_bvec_done. 2010-08-07block: push down BKL into .open and .releaseArnd Bergmann
The open and release block_device_operations are currently called with the BKL held. In order to change that, we must first make sure that all drivers that currently rely on this have no regressions. This blindly pushes the BKL into all .open and .release operations for all block drivers to prepare for the next step. The drivers can subsequently replace the BKL with their own locks or remove it completely when it can be shown that it is not needed. The functions blkdev_get and blkdev_put are the only remaining users of the big kernel lock in the block layer, besides a few uses in the ioctl code, none of which need to serialize with blkdev_{get,put}. Most of these two functions is also under the protection of bdev->bd_mutex, including the actual calls to ->open and ->release, and the common code does not access any global data structures that need the BKL. 2009-05-22block: Do away with the notion of hardsect_sizeMartin K. Petersen
Until now we have had a 1:1 mapping between storage device physical block size and the logical block sized used when addressing the device. With SATA 4KB drives coming out that will no longer be the case. The sector size will be 4KB but the logical block size will remain 512-bytes. Hence we need to distinguish between the physical block size and the logical ditto. This patch renames hardsect_size to logical_block_size. Signed-off-by: Martin K. 2008-10-21[PATCH] beginning of methods conversionAl Viro
To keep the size of changesets sane we split the switch by drivers; to keep the damn thing bisectable we do the following: 1) rename the affected methods, add ones with correct prototypes, make (few) callers handle both. That's this changeset. 2) for each driver convert to new methods. *ALL* drivers are converted in this series. 3) kill the old (renamed) methods. Note that it _is_ a flagday; all in-tree drivers are converted and by the end of this series no trace of old methods remain. The only reason why we do that this way is to keep the damn thing bisectable and allow per-driver debugging if anything goes wrong. New methods: open(bdev, mode) release(disk, mode) ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called without BKL */ compat_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) locked_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called with BKL, legacy */ Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2008-10-09block: don't depend on consecutive minor spaceTejun Heo
* Implement disk_devt() and part_devt() and use them to directly access devt instead of computing it from ->major and ->first_minor. Note that all references to ->major and ->first_minor outside of block layer is used to determine devt of the disk (the part0) and as ->major and ->first_minor will continue to represent devt for the disk, converting these users aren't strictly necessary. However, convert them for consistency. * Implement disk_max_parts() to avoid directly deferencing genhd->minors. * Update bdget_disk() such that it doesn't assume consecutive minor space. * Move devt computation from register_disk() to add_disk() and make it the only one (all other usages use the initially determined value).
