2008-11-25rtl8187: Remove module warning and dependence on CONFIG_EXPERIMENTALLarry Finger
After considerable testing, the initial fears that the driver might damage some flavors of RTL8187B hardware seem to be groundless. Accordingly, the logged warning is removed. In addition, Kconfig is changed to remove the dependence on EXPERIMENTAL. Firmware download is enabled for Agere in orinoco_cs. Symbol firmware download has been moved out of spectrum_cs into orinoco_cs. Firmware download is not enabled for Intersil. Symbol based firmware is restricted to only download on spectrum_cs based cards. The firmware names are hardcoded for each firmware type. The latest trace about usage of this driver I found was an (unanswered) request for help by a user trying to get it working reliably five years ago with kernel 2.4 . And even if it was still working the use cases of this driver (requiring both the hardware and someone providing this kind of wireless network) have become practically nonexisting. 2008-06-14mac80211_hwsim: 802.11 radio simulator for mac80211Jouni Malinen
mac80211_hwsim is a Linux kernel module that can be used to simulate arbitrary number of IEEE 802.11 radios for mac80211 on a single device. It can be used to test most of the mac80211 functionality and user space tools (e.g., hostapd and wpa_supplicant) in a way that matches very closely with the normal case of using real WLAN hardware. From the mac80211 view point, mac80211_hwsim is yet another hardware driver, i.e., no changes to mac80211 are needed to use this testing tool. 2008-02-29ipw2100/ipw2200: note firmware loading caveat in Kconfig help textDaniel Drake
Most wireless drivers load their firmware at interface open time, which generally occurs after the filesystem is available. However, the ipw drivers load their firmware at probe time because firmware is required to read the device MAC address. When built-in, probe happens before the filesystem is available, hence device init will only complete successfully if the user has made special arrangements (including firmware plus a loader in the initramfs). 2008-02-29cfg80211 API for channels/bitrates, mac80211 and driver conversionJohannes Berg
This patch creates new cfg80211 wiphy API for channel and bitrate registration and converts mac80211 and drivers to the new API. The old mac80211 API is completely ripped out. All drivers (except ath5k) are updated to the new API, in many cases I expect that optimisations can be done. Along with the regulatory code I've also ripped out the IEEE80211_HW_DEFAULT_REG_DOMAIN_CONFIGURED flag, I believe it to be unnecessary if the hardware simply gives us whatever channels it wants to support and we then enable/disable them as required, which is pretty much required for travelling. Additionally, the patch adds proper "basic" rate handling for STA mode interface, AP mode interface will have to have new API added to allow userspace to set the basic rate set, currently it'll be empty... However, the basic rate handling will need to be moved to the BSS conf stuff. I do expect there to be bugs in this, especially wrt. transmit power handling where I'm basically clueless about how it should work. Moving part of the debugging code from IPW_DEBUG to IPW_LL_DEBUG (low level debugging) and make IPW_DEBUG be always enabled. IPW_LL_DEBUG still needs to be enabled by selecting CONFIG_IPW2200_DEBUG.
