2020-11-05net/usb/r8153_ecm: support ECM mode for RTL8153Hayes Wang
Support ECM mode based on cdc_ether with relative mii functions, when CONFIG_USB_RTL8152 is not set, or the device is not supported by r8152 driver. Both r8152 and r8153_ecm would check the return value of rtl8152_get_version() in porbe(). If rtl8152_get_version() return none zero value, the r8152 is used for the device with vendor mode. Otherwise, the r8153_ecm is used for the device with ECM mode. 2020-08-23treewide: Use fallthrough pseudo-keywordGustavo A. R. Silva
Replace the existing /* fall through */ comments and its variants with the new pseudo-keyword macro fallthrough[1]. Also, remove unnecessary fall-through markings when it is the case. 2020-08-07r8152: Use MAC address from correct device tree nodeThierry Reding
Query the USB device's device tree node when looking for a MAC address. The struct device embedded into the struct net_device does not have a device tree node attached at all. The reason why this went unnoticed is because the system where this was tested was one of the few development units that had its OTP programmed, as opposed to production systems where the MAC address is stored in a separate EEPROM and is passed via device tree by the firmware. 2020-05-19r8152: support additional Microsoft Surface Ethernet Adapter variantMarc Payne
Device id 0927 is the RTL8153B-based component of the 'Surface USB-C to Ethernet and USB Adapter' and may be used as a component of other devices in future. Tested and working with the r8152 driver. Update the cdc_ether blacklist due to the RTL8153 'network jam on suspend' issue which this device will cause (personally confirmed). 2020-05-14r8152: Use MAC address from device tree if availableThierry Reding
If a MAC address was passed via the device tree node for the r8152 device, use it and fall back to reading from EEPROM otherwise. This is useful for devices where the r8152 EEPROM was not programmed with a valid MAC address, or if users want to explicitly set a MAC address in the bootloader and pass that to the kernel. 2020-03-02r8152: Replace zero-length array with flexible-array memberGustavo A. R. Silva
The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2], introduced in C99: struct foo { int stuff; struct boo array[]; }; By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on. Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this change: "Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1] This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle. 2020-02-29r8152: check disconnect status after long sleepYou-Sheng Yang
Dell USB Type C docking WD19/WD19DC attaches additional peripherals as: /: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 5000M |__ Port 1: Dev 11, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 5000M |__ Port 3: Dev 12, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 5000M |__ Port 4: Dev 13, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=r8152, 5000M where usb 2-1-3 is a hub connecting all USB Type-A/C ports on the dock. When hotplugging such dock with additional usb devices already attached on it, the probing process may reset usb 2.1 port, therefore r8152 ethernet device is also reset. However, during r8152 device init there are several for-loops that, when it's unable to retrieve hardware registers due to being disconnected from USB, may take up to 14 seconds each in practice, and that has to be completed before USB may re-enumerate devices on the bus. As a result, devices attached to the dock will only be available after nearly 1 minute after the dock was plugged in: [ 216.388290] [250] r8152 2-1.4:1.0: usb_probe_interface [ 216.388292] [250] r8152 2-1.4:1.0: usb_probe_interface - got id [ 258.830410] r8152 2-1.4:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): PHY not ready [ 258.830460] r8152 2-1.4:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Invalid header when reading pass-thru MAC addr [ 258.830464] r8152 2-1.4:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Get ether addr fail This happens in, for example, r8153_init: static int generic_ocp_read(struct r8152 *tp, u16 index, u16 size, void *data, u16 type) { if (test_bit(RTL8152_UNPLUG, &tp->flags)) return -ENODEV; ... } static u16 ocp_read_word(struct r8152 *tp, u16 type, u16 index) { u32 data; ... generic_ocp_read(tp, index, sizeof(tmp), &tmp, type | byen); data = __le32_to_cpu(tmp); ... return (u16)data; } static void r8153_init(struct r8152 *tp) { ... if (test_bit(RTL8152_UNPLUG, &tp->flags)) return; for (i = 0; i < 500; i++) { if (ocp_read_word(tp, MCU_TYPE_PLA, PLA_BOOT_CTRL) & AUTOLOAD_DONE) break; msleep(20); } ... } Since ocp_read_word() doesn't check the return status of generic_ocp_read(), and the only exit condition for the loop is to have a match in the returned value, such loops will only ends after exceeding its maximum runs when the device has been marked as disconnected, which takes 500 * 20ms = 10 seconds in theory, 14 in practice. To solve this long latency another test to RTL8152_UNPLUG flag should be added after those 20ms sleep to skip unnecessary loops, so that the device probe can complete early and proceed to parent port reset/reprobe process. This can be reproduced on all kernel versions up to latest v5.6-rc2, but after v5.5-rc7 the reproduce rate is dramatically lowered to 1/30 or less while it was around 1/2. 2019-11-22r8152: avoid to call napi_disable twiceHayes Wang
Call napi_disable() twice would cause dead lock. There are three situations may result in the issue. 1. rtl8152_pre_reset() and set_carrier() are run at the same time. 2. Call rtl8152_set_tunable() after rtl8152_close(). 3. Call rtl8152_set_ringparam() after rtl8152_close(). For #1, use the same solution as commit 84811412464d ("r8152: Re-order napi_disable in rtl8152_close"). For #2 and #3, add checking the flag of IFF_UP and using napi_disable/napi_enable during mutex. 2019-11-20r8152: Re-order napi_disable in rtl8152_closePrashant Malani
Both rtl_work_func_t() and rtl8152_close() call napi_disable(). Since the two calls aren't protected by a lock, if the close function starts executing before the work function, we can get into a situation where the napi_disable() function is called twice in succession (first by rtl8152_close(), then by set_carrier()). In such a situation, the second call would loop indefinitely, since rtl8152_close() doesn't call napi_enable() to clear the NAPI_STATE_SCHED bit. The rtl8152_close() function in turn issues a cancel_delayed_work_sync(), and so it would wait indefinitely for the rtl_work_func_t() to complete. Since rtl8152_close() is called by a process holding rtnl_lock() which is requested by other processes, this eventually leads to a system deadlock and crash. Re-order the napi_disable() call to occur after the work function disabling and urb cancellation calls are issued. 2019-11-05r8152: Add macpassthru support for ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2Kai-Heng Feng
ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 is another docking station that uses RTL8153 based USB ethernet. The device supports macpassthru, but it failed to pass the test of -AD, -BND and -BD. Simply bypass these tests since the device supports this feature just fine. Also the ACPI objects have some differences between Dell's and Lenovo's, so make those ACPI infos no longer hardcoded. This patch supports loading additional firmware file through request_firmware(). A firmware file may include a header followed by several blocks which have different types of firmware. Currently, the supported types are RTL_FW_END, RTL_FW_PLA, and RTL_FW_USB. The firmware is used to fix some compatible or hardware issues. For example, the device couldn't be found after rebooting several times. The supported chips are RTL_VER_04 (rtl8153a-2.fw) RTL_VER_05 (rtl8153a-3.fw) RTL_VER_06 (rtl8153a-4.fw) RTL_VER_09 (rtl8153b-2.fw) Signed-off-by: Hayes Wang <hayeswang@realtek.com> Reviewed-by: Prashant Malani <pmalani@chromium.org> Signed-off-by: David S. 2019-10-04r8152: Set macpassthru in reset_resume callbackKai-Heng Feng
r8152 may fail to establish network connection after resume from system suspend. If the USB port connects to r8152 lost its power during system suspend, the MAC address was written before is lost. The reason is that The MAC address doesn't get written again in its reset_resume callback. So let's set MAC address again in reset_resume callback. Also remove unnecessary lock as no other locking attempt will happen during reset_resume. Signed-off-by: Kai-Heng Feng <kai.heng.feng@canonical.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2019-10-03r8152: Add identifier names for function pointersPrashant Malani
Checkpatch throws warnings for function pointer declarations which lack identifier names. An example of such a warning is: WARNING: function definition argument 'struct r8152 *' should also have an identifier name 739: FILE: drivers/net/usb/r8152.c:739: + void (*init)(struct r8152 *); So, fix those warnings by adding the identifier names. While we are at it, also fix a character limit violation which was causing another checkpatch warning. The same for-loop check for the LINK_LIST_READY bit of an OOB_CTRL register is used in several places. Factor these out into a single function to reduce the lines of code. 2019-09-05r8152: adjust the settings of ups flagsHayes Wang
The UPS feature only works for runtime suspend, so UPS flags only need to be set before enabling runtime suspend. Therefore, I create a struct to record relative information, and use it before runtime suspend. All chips could record such information, even though not all of them support the feature of UPS. Then, some functions could be combined. Signed-off-by: Hayes Wang <hayeswang@realtek.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2019-09-05r8152: modify rtl8152_set_speed functionHayes Wang
First, for AUTONEG_DISABLE, we only need to modify MII_BMCR. Second, add advertising parameter for rtl8152_set_speed(). Add RTL_ADVERTISED_xxx for advertising parameter of rtl8152_set_speed(). Then, the advertising settings from ethtool could be saved. Signed-off-by: Hayes Wang <hayeswang@realtek.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2019-08-28Revert "r8152: napi hangup fix after disconnect"Hayes Wang
This reverts commit 0ee1f4734967af8321ecebaf9c74221ace34f2d5. The commit 0ee1f4734967 ("r8152: napi hangup fix after disconnect") adds a check about RTL8152_UNPLUG to determine if calling napi_disable() is invalid in rtl8152_close(), when rtl8152_disconnect() is called. This avoids to use napi_disable() after calling netif_napi_del(). Howver, commit ffa9fec30ca0 ("r8152: set RTL8152_UNPLUG only for real disconnection") causes that RTL8152_UNPLUG is not always set when calling rtl8152_disconnect(). Therefore, I have to revert commit 0ee1f4734967 ("r8152: napi hangup fix after disconnect"), first. And submit another patch to fix it.
