iOS devices require the host to be "trusted" before servicing network packets. Establishing trust requires the user to confirm a dialog on the iOS device.Until trust is established, the iOS device will silently discard network packets from the host. Currently, the ipheth driver does not detect whether an iOS device has established trust with the host, and immediately sets up the transmit queues. The proposed patch eliminates the problem by, upon connection, keeping the TX queue and carrier disabled until a packet is first received from the iOS device. This is reflected by the confirmed_pairing variable in the device structure. Only after at least one packet has been received from the iOS device, the transmit queue and carrier are brought up during the periodic device poll in ipheth_carrier_set. Because the iOS device will always send a packet immediately upon trust being established, this should not delay the interface becoming useable. To prevent failed UBRs in ipheth_rcvbulk_callback from perpetually re-enabling the queue if it was disabled, a new check is added so only successful transfers re-enable the queue, whereas failed transfers only trigger an immediate poll. This has the added benefit of removing the periodic control requests to the iOS device until trust has been established and thus should reduce wakeup events on both the host and the iOS device. Each iPad model has a different product id, this patch adds support for iPad 2 (pid 0x12a2) and iPad 3 (pid 0x12a6). Note that iPad 2 must be jailbroken and a third-party app must be used for tethering to work. On iPad 3, tethering works out of the box (assuming your ISP is nice). 2012-05-18USB: Disable hub-initiated LPM for comms devices.Sarah Sharp
Hub-initiated LPM is not good for USB communications devices. Comms devices should be able to tell when their link can go into a lower power state, because they know when an incoming transmission is finished. Ideally, these devices would slam their links into a lower power state, using the device-initiated LPM, after finishing the last packet of their data transfer. If we enable the idle timeouts for the parent hubs to enable hub-initiated LPM, we will get a lot of useless LPM packets on the bus as the devices reject LPM transitions when they're in the middle of receiving data. Worse, some devices might blindly accept the hub-initiated LPM and power down their radios while they're in the middle of receiving a transmission. The Intel Windows folks are disabling hub-initiated LPM for all USB communications devices under a xHCI USB 3.0 host. In order to keep the Linux behavior as close as possible to Windows, we need to do the same in Linux. Set the disable_hub_initiated_lpm flag for for all USB communications drivers. I know there aren't currently any USB 3.0 devices that implement these class specifications, but we should be ready if they do. 2011-05-08ipheth: Properly distinguish length and alignment in URBs and skbsBen Hutchings
The USB protocol this driver implements appears to require 2 bytes of padding in front of each received packet. This used to be equal to the value of NET_IP_ALIGN on x86, so the driver abused that constant and mostly worked, but this is no longer the case. The driver also mixed up the URB and packet lengths, resulting in 2 bytes of junk at the end of the skb. 2010-09-09ipheth: remove incorrect devtype to WWANDan Williams
The 'wwan' devtype is meant for devices that require preconfiguration and *every* time setup before the ethernet interface can be used, like cellular modems which require a series of setup commands on serial ports or other mechanisms before the ethernet interface will handle packets. As ipheth only requires one-per-hotplug pairing setup with no preconfiguration (like APN, phone #, etc) and the network interface is usable at any time after that initial setup, remove the incorrect devtype wwan.
