2020-01-03compat_ioctl: move HDIO ioctl handling into drivers/ideArnd Bergmann
Most of the HDIO ioctls are only used by the obsolete drivers/ide subsystem, these can be handled by changing ide_cmd_ioctl() to be aware of compat mode and doing the correct transformations in place and using it as both native and compat handlers for all drivers. The SCSI drivers implementing the same commands are already doing this in the drivers, so the compat_blkdev_driver_ioctl() function is no longer needed now. The BLKSECTSET and HDIO_GETGEO_BIG ioctls are not implemented in any driver any more and no longer need any conversion. 2020-01-03compat_ioctl: move cdrom commands into cdrom.cArnd Bergmann
There is no need for the special cases for the cdrom ioctls any more now, so make sure that each cdrom driver has a .compat_ioctl() callback and calls cdrom_compat_ioctl() directly there. Reviewed-by: Ben Hutchings <ben.hutchings@codethink.co.uk> Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
2019-06-14docs: cdrom: convert docs to ReST and rename to *.rstMauro Carvalho Chehab
The stuff there is almost already at ReST format. A conversion for them is trivial: just add a missing titles and fix some scape codes for them to match ReST syntax. While here, rename the cdrom-standard.txt, with was converted from LaTeX to ReST on the previous patch, and add it to the index file. 2019-04-12Revert "ide: unexport DISK_EVENT_MEDIA_CHANGE for ide-gd and ide-cd"Martin Wilck
This reverts commit 7eec77a1816a7042591a6cbdb4820e9e7ebffe0e. Instead of leaving disk->events completely empty, we now export the supported events again, and tell the block layer not to forward events to user space by not setting DISK_EVENT_FLAG_UEVENT. This allows the block layer to distinguish between devices that for which events should be handled in kernel only, and devices which don't support any meda change events at all. 2018-03-17block: Move SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT definitions into <linux/blkdev.h>Bart Van Assche
It happens often while I'm preparing a patch for a block driver that I'm wondering: is a definition of SECTOR_SIZE and/or SECTOR_SHIFT available for this driver? Do I have to introduce definitions of these constants before I can use these constants? To avoid this confusion, move the existing definitions of SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT into the <linux/blkdev.h> header file such that these become available for all block drivers. Make the SECTOR_SIZE definition in the uapi msdos_fs.h header file conditional to avoid that including that header file after <linux/blkdev.h> causes the compiler to complain about a SECTOR_SIZE redefinition. Note: the SECTOR_SIZE / SECTOR_SHIFT / SECTOR_BITS definitions have not been removed from uapi header files nor from NAND drivers in which these constants are used for another purpose than converting block layer offsets and sizes into a number of sectors. 2017-11-14ide: Make ide_cdrom_prep_fs() initialize the sense buffer pointerBart Van Assche

2017-11-07drivers/ide-cd: Handle missing driver data during status check gracefullyBorislav Petkov
The 0day bot reports the below failure which happens occasionally, with their randconfig testing (once every ~100 boots). The Code points at the private pointer ->driver_data being NULL, which hints at a race of sorts where the private driver_data descriptor has disappeared by the time we get to run the workqueue. So let's check that pointer before we continue with issuing the command to the drive. This fix is of the brown paper bag nature but considering that IDE is long deprecated, let's do that so that random testing which happens to enable CONFIG_IDE during randconfig builds, doesn't fail because of this. Besides, failing the TEST_UNIT_READY command because the drive private data is gone is something which we could simply do anyway, to denote that there was a problem communicating with the device. Instead of explicitly calling scsi_req_init() after blk_get_request(), call that function from inside blk_get_request(). 2017-06-09block: introduce new block status code typeChristoph Hellwig
Currently we use nornal Linux errno values in the block layer, and while we accept any error a few have overloaded magic meanings. This patch instead introduces a new blk_status_t value that holds block layer specific status codes and explicitly explains their meaning. Helpers to convert from and to the previous special meanings are provided for now, but I suspect we want to get rid of them in the long run - those drivers that have a errno input (e.g. networking) usually get errnos that don't know about the special block layer overloads, and similarly returning them to userspace will usually return somethings that strictly speaking isn't correct for file system operations, but that's left as an exercise for later. For now the set of errors is a very limited set that closely corresponds to the previous overloaded errno values, but there is some low hanging fruite to improve it. blk_status_t (ab)uses the sparse __bitwise annotations to allow for sparse typechecking, so that we can easily catch places passing the wrong values. <linux/sched/task_stack.h> We are going to split <linux/sched/task_stack.h> out of <linux/sched.h>, which will have to be picked up from other headers and a couple of .c files. 2017-02-14cdrom: Make device operations read-onlyKees Cook
Since function tables are a common target for attackers, it's best to keep them in read-only memory. As such, this makes the CDROM device ops tables const. This drops additionally n_minors, since it isn't used meaningfully, and sets the only user of cdrom_dummy_generic_packet explicitly so the variables can all be const. 2017-01-31block: fold cmd_type into the REQ_OP_ spaceChristoph Hellwig
Instead of keeping two levels of indirection for requests types, fold it all into the operations. The little caveat here is that previously cmd_type only applied to struct request, while the request and bio op fields were set to plain REQ_OP_READ/WRITE even for passthrough operations. Instead this patch adds new REQ_OP_* for SCSI passthrough and driver private requests, althought it has to add two for each so that we can communicate the data in/out nature of the request. 2017-01-31ide: don't abuse cmd_typeChristoph Hellwig
Currently the legacy ide driver defines several request types of it's own, which is in the way of removing that field entirely. Instead add a type field to struct ide_request and use that to distinguish the different types of IDE-internal requests. It's a bit of a mess, but so is the surrounding code.. 2016-10-28block: split out request-only flags into a new namespaceChristoph Hellwig
A lot of the REQ_* flags are only used on struct requests, and only of use to the block layer and a few drivers that dig into struct request internals. This patch adds a new req_flags_t rq_flags field to struct request for them, and thus dramatically shrinks the number of common requests. It also removes the unfortunate situation where we have to fit the fields from the same enum into 32 bits for struct bio and 64 bits for struct request. 2015-11-06mm, page_alloc: rename __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIMMel Gorman
__GFP_WAIT was used to signal that the caller was in atomic context and could not sleep. Now it is possible to distinguish between true atomic context and callers that are not willing to sleep. The latter should clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing __GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the wrong flags. This patch renames __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM to clearly indicate what it does -- setting it allows all reclaim activity, clearing them prevents it. Disk event code automatically blocks events on excl write. This is primarily to avoid issuing polling commands while burning is in progress. This behavior doesn't fit other types of devices with removeable media where polling commands don't have adverse side effects and door locking usually doesn't exist. This patch introduces new genhd flag which controls the auto-blocking behavior and uses it to enable auto-blocking only on optical devices. 2011-03-09ide: Convert to bdops->check_events()Tejun Heo
Convert ->media_changed() to the new ->check_events() method. The conversion is mostly mechanical. The only notable change is that cdrom now doesn't generate any event if @slot_nr isn't CDSL_CURRENT. It used to return -EINVAL which would be treated as media changed. As media changer isn't supported anyway, this doesn't make any difference. This makes ide emit the standard disk events and allows kernel event polling. Currently, only MEDIA_CHANGE event is implemented. Adding support for EJECT_REQUEST shouldn't be difficult; however, given that ide driver is already deprecated, it probably is best to leave it alone.
