2020-08-18Revert "HID: usbhid: do not sleep when opening device"Jiri Kosina
This reverts commit d3132792285859253c466354fd8d54d1fe0ba786. This patch causes a regression with quite a few devices, as probing fails because of the race where the first IRQ is dropped on the floor (after hid_device_io_start() happens, but before the 50ms timeout passess), and report descriptor never gets parsed and populated. As this is just a boot time micro-optimization, let's revert the patch for 5.9 now, and fix this properly eventually for next merge window. 2020-06-16HID: usbhid: do not sleep when opening deviceDmitry Torokhov
usbhid tries to give the device 50 milliseconds to drain its queues when opening the device, but does it naively by simply sleeping in open handler, which slows down device probing (and thus may affect overall boot time). However we do not need to sleep as we can instead mark a point of time in the future when we should start processing the events. 2020-06-14treewide: replace '---help---' in Kconfig files with 'help'Masahiro Yamada
Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over '---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances. This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines, I also fixed the indentation. There are a variety of indentation styles found. a) 4 spaces + '---help---' b) 7 spaces + '---help---' c) 8 spaces + '---help---' d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---' e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation) f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---' g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---' In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the following commend: $ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/' Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>
2020-04-29HID: usbhid: Fix race between usbhid_close() and usbhid_stop()Alan Stern
The syzbot fuzzer discovered a bad race between in the usbhid driver between usbhid_stop() and usbhid_close(). In particular, usbhid_stop() does: usb_free_urb(usbhid->urbin); ... usbhid->urbin = NULL; /* don't mess up next start */ and usbhid_close() does: usb_kill_urb(usbhid->urbin); with no mutual exclusion. If the two routines happen to run concurrently so that usb_kill_urb() is called in between the usb_free_urb() and the NULL assignment, it will access the deallocated urb structure -- a use-after-free bug. This patch adds a mutex to the usbhid private structure and uses it to enforce mutual exclusion of the usbhid_start(), usbhid_stop(), usbhid_open() and usbhid_close() callbacks. 2020-02-12HID: hiddev: Fix race in in hiddev_disconnect()dan.carpenter@oracle.com
Syzbot reports that "hiddev" is used after it's free in hiddev_disconnect(). The hiddev_disconnect() function sets "hiddev->exist = 0;" so hiddev_release() can free it as soon as we drop the "existancelock" lock. This patch moves the mutex_unlock(&hiddev->existancelock) until after we have finished using it. Reported-by: syzbot+784ccb935f9900cc7c9e@syzkaller.appspotmail.com Fixes: 7f77897ef2b6 ("HID: hiddev: fix potential use-after-free") Suggested-by: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> Signed-off-by: Dan Carpenter <dan.carpenter@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Jiri Kosina <jkosina@suse.cz>
2019-12-18HID: hiddev: fix mess in hiddev_open()Dmitry Torokhov
The open method of hiddev handler fails to bring the device out of autosuspend state as was promised in 0361a28d3f9a, as it actually has 2 blocks that try to start the transport (call hid_hw_open()) with both being guarded by the "open" counter, so the 2nd block is never executed as the first block increments the counter so it is never at 0 when we check it for the second block. Additionally hiddev_open() was leaving counter incremented on errors, causing the device to never be reopened properly if there was ever an error. Let's fix all of this by factoring out code that creates client structure and powers up the device into a separate function that is being called from usbhid_open() with the "existancelock" being held. 2018-10-26HID: hiddev: fix potential Spectre v1Breno Leitao
uref->usage_index can be indirectly controlled by userspace, hence leading to a potential exploitation of the Spectre variant 1 vulnerability. This field is used as an array index by the hiddev_ioctl_usage() function, when 'cmd' is either HIDIOCGCOLLECTIONINDEX, HIDIOCGUSAGES or HIDIOCSUSAGES. For cmd == HIDIOCGCOLLECTIONINDEX case, uref->usage_index is compared to field->maxusage and then used as an index to dereference field->usage array. The same thing happens to the cmd == HIDIOC{G,S}USAGES cases, where uref->usage_index is checked against an array maximum value and then it is used as an index in an array. This is a summary of the HIDIOCGCOLLECTIONINDEX case, which matches the traditional Spectre V1 first load: copy_from_user(uref, user_arg, sizeof(*uref)) if (uref->usage_index >= field->maxusage) goto inval; i = field->usage[uref->usage_index].collection_index; return i; This patch fixes this by sanitizing field uref->usage_index before using it to index field->usage (HIDIOCGCOLLECTIONINDEX) or field->value in HIDIOC{G,S}USAGES arrays, thus, avoiding speculation in the first load. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. The hid descriptor identifies the length and type of subordinate descriptors for a device. If the received hid descriptor is smaller than the size of the struct hid_descriptor, it is possible to cause out-of-bounds. In addition, if bNumDescriptors of the hid descriptor have an incorrect value, this can also cause out-of-bounds while approaching hdesc->desc[n]. So check the size of hid descriptor and bNumDescriptors. usb_device_id are not supposed to change at runtime. All functions working with usb_device_id provided by <linux/usb.h> work with const usb_device_id. So mark the non-const structs as const. 2017-07-31HID: add ALWAYS_POLL quirk for Logitech 0xc077Kyle Roarty
Without a quirk or the X Window System, this device disconnects every 60 seconds. This patch also renames the define associated with the Logitech 0xc007 product ID, which appeared to have a conflicting typo. 2017-07-27HID: introduce hid_is_using_ll_driverJason Gerecke
Although HID itself is transport-agnostic, occasionally a driver may want to interact with the low-level transport that a device is connected through. To do this, we need to know what kind of bus is in use. The first guess may be to look at the 'bus' field of the 'struct hid_device', but this field may be emulated in some cases (e.g. uhid). More ideally, we can check which ll_driver a device is using. This function introduces a 'hid_is_using_ll_driver' function and makes the 'struct hid_ll_driver' of the four most common transports accessible through hid.h. 2017-07-21HID: usbhid: fix "always poll" quirkDmitry Torokhov
Even though the IO for devices with "always poll" quirk is already running, we still need to set HID_OPENED bit in usbhid->iofl so the interrupt handler does not ignore the data coming from the device. Instead of checking hid->open (that we plan on having HID core manage) in hid_start_in(), let's allocate a couple of new flags: HID_IN_POLLING and HID_OPENED, and use them to decide whether we should be submitting URBs or not. Instead of calling into usbhid code directly, let's use the standard accessors for the transport HID drivers, and stop clobbering their error codes with -EIO. This also allows us to remove usbhid_get/put_power(), leaving only usbhid_power().
