2015-01-21drm/fb-helper: Propagate errors from initial config failureThierry Reding
Make drm_fb_helper_initial_config() return an int rather than a bool so that the error can be properly propagated. While at it, update drivers to propagate errors further rather than just ignore them. v2: - cirrus: No cleanup is required, the top-level cirrus_driver_load() will do it as part of cirrus_driver_unload() in its cleanup path. 2014-11-05drm: Move drm_crtc_init from drm_crtc.h to drm_plane_helper.hDaniel Vetter
Just a bit of OCD cleanup on headers - this function isn't the core interface any more but just a helper for drivers who haven't yet transitioned to universal planes. Put the declaration at the right spot and sprinkle necessary #includes over all drivers. Maybe this helps to encourage driver maintainers to do the switch. v2: Fix #include ordering for tegra, reported by 0-day builder. v3: Include required headers, reported by Thierry. 2014-09-10drm: add driver->set_busid() callbackDavid Herrmann
One step closer to dropping all the drm_bus_* code: Add a driver->set_busid() callback and make all drivers use the generic helpers. Nouveau is the only driver that uses two different bus-types with the same drm_driver. This is totally broken if both buses are available on the same machine (unlikely, but lets be safe). Therefore, we create two different drivers for each platform during module_init() and set the set_busid() callback respectively. 2014-08-06drm: Perform cmdline mode parsing during connector initialisationChris Wilson
i915.ko has a custom fbdev initialisation routine that aims to preserve the current mode set by the BIOS, unless overruled by the user. The user's wishes are determined by what, if any, mode is specified on the command line (via the video= parameter). However, that command line mode is first parsed by drm_fb_helper_initial_config() which is called after i915.ko's custom initial_config() as a fallback method. So in order for us to honour it, we need to move the cmdline parser earlier. If we perform the connector cmdline parsing as soon as we initialise the connector, that cmdline mode and forced status is then available even if the fbdev helper is not compiled in or never called. We also then expose the cmdline user mode in the connector mode lists. v2: Rebase after connector->name upheaval. v3: Adapt mga200 to look for the cmdline mode in the new place. Nicely simplifies things while at that. v4: Fix checkpatch. v5: Select FB_CMDLINE to adapt to the changed fbdev patch. 2014-07-08drm: Introduce drm_fb_helper_prepare()Thierry Reding
To implement hotplug detection in a race-free manner, drivers must call drm_kms_helper_poll_init() before hotplug events can be triggered. Such events can be triggered right after any of the encoders or connectors are initialized. At the same time, if the drm_fb_helper_hotplug_event() helper is used by a driver, then the poll helper requires some parts of the FB helper to be initialized to prevent a crash. At the same time, drm_fb_helper_init() requires information that is not necessarily available at such an early stage (number of CRTCs and connectors), so it cannot be used yet. Add a new helper, drm_fb_helper_prepare(), that initializes the bare minimum needed to allow drm_kms_helper_poll_init() to execute and any subsequent hotplug events to be processed properly. 2014-03-16drm: use anon-inode instead of relying on cdevsDavid Herrmann
DRM drivers share a common address_space across all character-devices of a single DRM device. This allows simple buffer eviction and mapping-control. However, DRM core currently waits for the first ->open() on any char-dev to mark the underlying inode as backing inode of the device. This delayed initialization causes ugly conditions all over the place: if (dev->dev_mapping) do_sth(); To avoid delayed initialization and to stop reusing the inode of the char-dev, we allocate an anonymous inode for each DRM device and reset filp->f_mapping to it on ->open(). 2013-08-27drm: verify vma access in TTM+GEM driversDavid Herrmann
GEM does already a good job in tracking access to gem buffers via handles and drm_vma access management. However, TTM drivers currently do not verify this during mmap(). TTM provides the verify_access() callback to test this. So fix all drivers to actually call into gem+vma to verify access instead of always returning 0. All drivers assume that user-space can only get access to TTM buffers via GEM handles. So whenever the verify_access() callback is called from ttm_bo_mmap(), the buffer must have a valid embedded gem object. This is true for all TTM+GEM drivers. But that's why this patch doesn't touch pure TTM drivers (ie, vmwgfx). v2: Switch to drm_vma_node_verify_access() to correctly return -EACCES if access was denied. 2013-08-19drm: rip out drm_core_has_MTRR checksDaniel Vetter
The new arch_phys_wc_add/del functions do the right thing both with and without MTRR support in the kernel. So we can drop these additional checks. At least nouveau seemed to work here, but it doesn't use AGP > or drm_bufs, I guess. Cool, thanks a lot for stitching together the list of drivers to look at. So for real KMS drivers it's the drives responsibility to add an mtrr if it needs one. nouvea, radeon, mgag200, i915 and vmwgfx do that already. Somehow the savage driver also ends up doing that, I have no idea why. Note that gma500 as a pure KMS driver doesn't need MTRR setup since the platforms that it supports all support PAT. So no MTRRs needed to get wc iomappings. The mtrr support in the drm core is all for legacy mappings of garts, framebuffers and registers. All legacy drivers set the USE_MTRR flag, so we're good there. 2013-08-19drm: remove FASYNC supportDaniel Vetter
So I've stumbled over drm_fasync and wondered what it does. Digging that up is quite a story. First I've had to read up on what this does and ended up being rather bewildered why peopled loved signals so much back in the days that they've created SIGIO just for that ... Then I wondered how this ever works, and what that strange "No-op." comment right above it should mean. After all calling the core fasync helper is pretty obviously not a noop. After reading through the kernels FASYNC implementation I've noticed that signals are only sent out to the processes attached with FASYNC by calling kill_fasync. No merged drm driver has ever done that. After more digging I've found out that the only driver that ever used this is the so called GAMMA driver. I've frankly never heard of such a gpu brand ever before. Now FASYNC seems to not have been the only bad thing with that driver, since Dave Airlie removed it from the drm driver with prejudice: commit 1430163b4bbf7b00367ea1066c1c5fe85dbeefed Author: Dave Airlie <airlied@linux.ie> Date: Sun Aug 29 12:04:35 2004 +0000 Drop GAMMA DRM from a great height ... Long story short, the drm fasync support seems to be doing absolutely nothing. And the only user of it was never merged into the upstream kernel. And we don't need any fops->fasync callback since the fcntl implementation in the kernel already implements the noop case correctly. So stop this particular cargo-cult and rip it all out. v2: Kill drm_fasync assignments in rcar (newly added) and imx drivers (somehow I've missed that one in staging). Also drop the reference in the drm DocBook. ARM compile-fail reported by Rob Clark. v3: Move the removal of dev->buf_asnyc assignment in drm_setup to this patch here. v4: Actually git add ... tsk. 2013-08-19drm/mgag200: remove unused driver_private accessDavid Herrmann

2013-08-07drm/mgag200: Invalidate page tables when pinning a BOEgbert Eich
When a BO gets pinned the placement may get changed. If the memory is mapped into user space and user space has already accessed the mapped range the page tables are set up but now point to the wrong memory. Set bo.mdev->dev_mapping in mgag200_bo_create() to make sure that ttm_bo_unmap_virtual() called from ttm_bo_handle_move_mem() will take care of this. v2: Don't call ttm_bo_unmap_virtual() in mgag200_bo_pin(), fix comment. 2013-08-07drm/gem: create drm_gem_dumb_destroyDaniel Vetter
All the gem based kms drivers really want the same function to destroy a dumb framebuffer backing storage object. So give it to them and roll it out in all drivers. This still leaves the option open for kms drivers which don't use GEM for backing storage, but it does decently simplify matters for gem drivers. 2013-07-25drm/ttm: convert to unified vma offset managerDavid Herrmann
Use the new vma-manager infrastructure. This doesn't change any implementation details as the vma-offset-manager is nearly copied 1-to-1 from TTM. The vm_lock is moved into the offset manager so we can drop it from TTM. During lookup, we use the vma locking helpers to take a reference to the found object. In all other scenarios, locking stays the same as before. We always guarantee that drm_vma_offset_remove() is called only during destruction. Hence, helpers like drm_vma_node_offset_addr() are always safe as long as the node has a valid offset. This also drops the addr_space_offset member as it is a copy of vm_start in vma_node objects. Use the accessor functions instead. v4: - remove vm_lock - use drm_vma_offset_lock_lookup() to protect lookup (instead of vm_lock) Cc: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com> Cc: Ben Skeggs <bskeggs@redhat.com> Cc: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst@canonical.com> Cc: Martin Peres <martin.peres@labri.fr> Cc: Alex Deucher <alexander.deucher@amd.com> Cc: Thomas Hellstrom <thellstrom@vmware.com> Signed-off-by: David Herrmann <dh.herrmann@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@gmail.com>
