2021-01-22dma-fence: allow signaling drivers to set fence timestampVeera Sundaram Sankaran
Some drivers have hardware capability to get the precise HW timestamp of certain events based on which the fences are triggered. The delta between the event HW timestamp & current HW reference timestamp can be used to calculate the timestamp in kernel's CLOCK_MONOTONIC time domain. This allows it to set accurate timestamp factoring out any software and IRQ latencies. Add a timestamp variant of fence signal function, dma_fence_signal_timestamp to allow drivers to update the precise timestamp for fences. Changes in v2: - Add a new fence signal variant instead of modifying fence struct Changes in v3: - Add timestamp domain information to commit-text and dma_fence_signal_timestamp documentation Signed-off-by: Veera Sundaram Sankaran <veeras@codeaurora.org> Reviewed-by: John Stultz <john.stultz@linaro.org> Signed-off-by: Sumit Semwal <sumit.semwal@linaro.org> [sumits: minor parenthesis alignment] Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/1610757107-11892-1-git-send-email-veeras@codeaurora.org
2021-01-22dma-buf: heaps: Rework heap allocation hooks to return struct dma_buf ↵John Stultz
instead of fd Every heap needs to create a dmabuf and then export it to a fd via dma_buf_fd(), so to consolidate things a bit, have the heaps just return a struct dmabuf * and let the top level dma_heap_buffer_alloc() call handle creating the fd via dma_buf_fd(). 2021-01-18dma-buf: Add debug optionDaniel Vetter
We have too many people abusing the struct page they can get at but really shouldn't in importers. Aside from that the backing page might simply not exist (for dynamic p2p mappings) looking at it and using it e.g. for mmap can also wreak the page handling of the exporter completely. Importers really must go through the proper interface like dma_buf_mmap for everything. I'm semi-tempted to enforce this for dynamic importers since those really have no excuse at all to break the rules. Unfortuantely we can't store the right pointers somewhere safe to make sure we oops on something recognizable, so best is to just wrangle them a bit by flipping all the bits. At least on x86 kernel addresses have all their high bits sets and the struct page array is fairly low in the kernel mapping, so flipping all the bits gives us a very high pointer in userspace and hence excellent chances for an invalid dereference. v2: Add a note to the @map_dma_buf hook that exporters shouldn't do fancy caching tricks, which would blow up with this address scrambling trick here (Chris) Enable by default when CONFIG_DMA_API_DEBUG is enabled. v3: Only one copy of the mangle/unmangle code (Christian) v4: #ifdef, not #if (0day) v5: sg_table can also be an ERR_PTR (Chris, Christian) Reviewed-by: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Reviewed-by: Christian König <christian.koenig@amd.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@intel.com> Cc: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Cc: Sumit Semwal <sumit.semwal@linaro.org> Cc: "Christian König" <christian.koenig@amd.com> Cc: David Stevens <stevensd@chromium.org> Cc: linux-media@vger.kernel.org Cc: linaro-mm-sig@lists.linaro.org Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210115164739.3958206-1-daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch

2020-11-22dma-buf: heaps: Skip sync if not mappedJohn Stultz
This patch is basically a port of Ørjan Eide's similar patch for ION https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200414134629.54567-1-orjan.eide@arm.com/ Only sync the sg-list of dma-buf heap attachment when the attachment is actually mapped on the device. dma-bufs may be synced at any time. It can be reached from user space via DMA_BUF_IOCTL_SYNC, so there are no guarantees from callers on when syncs may be attempted, and dma_buf_end_cpu_access() and dma_buf_begin_cpu_access() may not be paired. Since the sg_list's dma_address isn't set up until the buffer is used on the device, and dma_map_sg() is called on it, the dma_address will be NULL if sync is attempted on the dma-buf before it's mapped on a device. Before v5.0 (commit 55897af63091 ("dma-direct: merge swiotlb_dma_ops into the dma_direct code")) this was a problem as the dma-api (at least the swiotlb_dma_ops on arm64) would use the potentially invalid dma_address. How that failed depended on how the device handled physical address 0. If 0 was a valid address to physical ram, that page would get flushed a lot, while the actual pages in the buffer would not get synced correctly. While if 0 is an invalid physical address it may cause a fault and trigger a crash. In v5.0 this was incidentally fixed by commit 55897af63091 ("dma-direct: merge swiotlb_dma_ops into the dma_direct code"), as this moved the dma-api to use the page pointer in the sg_list, and (for Ion buffers at least) this will always be valid if the sg_list exists at all. But, this issue is re-introduced in v5.3 with commit 449fa54d6815 ("dma-direct: correct the physical addr in dma_direct_sync_sg_for_cpu/device") moves the dma-api back to the old behaviour and picks the dma_address that may be invalid. dma-buf core doesn't ensure that the buffer is mapped on the device, and thus have a valid sg_list, before calling the exporter's begin_cpu_access. 2020-11-22dma-buf: heaps: Move heap-helper logic into the cma_heap implementationJohn Stultz
Since the heap-helpers logic ended up not being as generic as hoped, move the heap-helpers dma_buf_ops implementations into the cma_heap directly. 2020-11-22dma-buf: system_heap: Rework system heap to use sgtables instead of pagelistsJohn Stultz
In preparation for some patches to optmize the system heap code, rework the dmabuf exporter to utilize sgtables rather then pageslists for tracking the associated pages. This will allow for large order page allocations, as well as more efficient page pooling. In doing so, the system heap stops using the heap-helpers logic which sadly is not quite as generic as I was hoping it to be, so this patch adds heap specific implementations of the dma_buf_ops function handlers. 2020-09-29dma-buf: Add struct dma-buf-map for storing struct dma_buf.vaddr_ptrThomas Zimmermann
The new type struct dma_buf_map represents a mapping of dma-buf memory into kernel space. It contains a flag, is_iomem, that signals users to access the mapped memory with I/O operations instead of regular loads and stores. It was assumed that DMA buffer memory can be accessed with regular load and store operations. Some architectures, such as sparc64, require the use of I/O operations to access dma-map buffers that are located in I/O memory. Providing struct dma_buf_map allows drivers to implement this. This was specifically a problem when refreshing the graphics framebuffer on such systems. [1] As the first step, struct dma_buf stores an instance of struct dma_buf_map internally. Afterwards, dma-buf's vmap and vunmap interfaces are be converted. Finally, affected drivers can be fixed. v3: * moved documentation into separate patch * test for NULL pointers with !<ptr> [1] https://lore.kernel.org/dri-devel/20200725191012.GA434957@ravnborg.org/ Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Christian König <christian.koenig@amd.com> Reviewed-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Acked-by: Sumit Semwal <sumit.semwal@linaro.org> Acked-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20200925115601.23955-2-tzimmermann@suse.de

2020-09-10dmabuf: fix common struct sg_table related issuesMarek Szyprowski
The Documentation/DMA-API-HOWTO.txt states that the dma_map_sg() function returns the number of the created entries in the DMA address space. However the subsequent calls to the dma_sync_sg_for_{device,cpu}() and dma_unmap_sg must be called with the original number of the entries passed to the dma_map_sg(). struct sg_table is a common structure used for describing a non-contiguous memory buffer, used commonly in the DRM and graphics subsystems. It consists of a scatterlist with memory pages and DMA addresses (sgl entry), as well as the number of scatterlist entries: CPU pages (orig_nents entry) and DMA mapped pages (nents entry). It turned out that it was a common mistake to misuse nents and orig_nents entries, calling DMA-mapping functions with a wrong number of entries or ignoring the number of mapped entries returned by the dma_map_sg() function. To avoid such issues, lets use a common dma-mapping wrappers operating directly on the struct sg_table objects and use scatterlist page iterators where possible. This, almost always, hides references to the nents and orig_nents entries, making the code robust, easier to follow and copy/paste safe. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull locking updates from Thomas Gleixner: "A set of locking fixes and updates: - Untangle the header spaghetti which causes build failures in various situations caused by the lockdep additions to seqcount to validate that the write side critical sections are non-preemptible. - The seqcount associated lock debug addons which were blocked by the above fallout. seqcount writers contrary to seqlock writers must be externally serialized, which usually happens via locking - except for strict per CPU seqcounts. As the lock is not part of the seqcount, lockdep cannot validate that the lock is held. This new debug mechanism adds the concept of associated locks. sequence count has now lock type variants and corresponding initializers which take a pointer to the associated lock used for writer serialization. If lockdep is enabled the pointer is stored and write_seqcount_begin() has a lockdep assertion to validate that the lock is held. Aside of the type and the initializer no other code changes are required at the seqcount usage sites. The rest of the seqcount API is unchanged and determines the type at compile time with the help of _Generic which is possible now that the minimal GCC version has been moved up. Adding this lockdep coverage unearthed a handful of seqcount bugs which have been addressed already independent of this. While generally useful this comes with a Trojan Horse twist: On RT kernels the write side critical section can become preemtible if the writers are serialized by an associated lock, which leads to the well known reader preempts writer livelock. RT prevents this by storing the associated lock pointer independent of lockdep in the seqcount and changing the reader side to block on the lock when a reader detects that a writer is in the write side critical section. - Conversion of seqcount usage sites to associated types and initializers" * tag 'locking-urgent-2020-08-10' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (25 commits) locking/seqlock, headers: Untangle the spaghetti monster locking, arch/ia64: Reduce <asm/smp.h> header dependencies by moving XTP bits into the new <asm/xtp.h> header x86/headers: Remove APIC headers from <asm/smp.h> seqcount: More consistent seqprop names seqcount: Compress SEQCNT_LOCKNAME_ZERO() seqlock: Fold seqcount_LOCKNAME_init() definition seqlock: Fold seqcount_LOCKNAME_t definition seqlock: s/__SEQ_LOCKDEP/__SEQ_LOCK/g hrtimer: Use sequence counter with associated raw spinlock kvm/eventfd: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock userfaultfd: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock NFSv4: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock iocost: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock raid5: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock vfs: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock timekeeping: Use sequence counter with associated raw spinlock xfrm: policy: Use sequence counters with associated lock netfilter: nft_set_rbtree: Use sequence counter with associated rwlock netfilter: conntrack: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock sched: tasks: Use sequence counter with associated spinlock ...
2020-07-29dma-buf: Use sequence counter with associated wound/wait mutexAhmed S. Darwish
A sequence counter write side critical section must be protected by some form of locking to serialize writers. If the serialization primitive is not disabling preemption implicitly, preemption has to be explicitly disabled before entering the sequence counter write side critical section. The dma-buf reservation subsystem uses plain sequence counters to manage updates to reservations. Writer serialization is accomplished through a wound/wait mutex. Acquiring a wound/wait mutex does not disable preemption, so this needs to be done manually before and after the write side critical section. Use the newly-added seqcount_ww_mutex_t instead: - It associates the ww_mutex with the sequence count, which enables lockdep to validate that the write side critical section is properly serialized. - It removes the need to explicitly add preempt_disable/enable() around the write side critical section because the write_begin/end() functions for this new data type automatically do this. If lockdep is disabled this ww_mutex lock association is compiled out and has neither storage size nor runtime overhead. Signed-off-by: Ahmed S. 2020-07-29dma-buf: Remove custom seqcount lockdep class keyAhmed S. Darwish
Commit 3c3b177a9369 ("reservation: add support for read-only access using rcu") introduced a sequence counter to manage updates to reservations. Back then, the reservation object initializer reservation_object_init() was always inlined. Having the sequence counter initialization inlined meant that each of the call sites would have a different lockdep class key, which would've broken lockdep's deadlock detection. The aforementioned commit thus introduced, and exported, a custom seqcount lockdep class key and name. The commit 8735f16803f00 ("dma-buf: cleanup reservation_object_init...") transformed the reservation object initializer to a normal non-inlined C function. seqcount_init(), which automatically defines the seqcount lockdep class key and must be called non-inlined, can now be safely used. Remove the seqcount custom lockdep class key, name, and export. Use seqcount_init() inside the dma reservation object initializer. Signed-off-by: Ahmed S.
