2010-04-20ACPICA: Minimize the differences between linux GPE code and ACPICA code baseLin Ming
We have ported Rafael's major GPE changes (ACPI: Use GPE reference counting to support shared GPEs) into ACPICA code base. But the port and Rafael's original patch have some differences, so we made below patch to make linux GPE code consistent with ACPICA code base. Most changes are about comments and coding styles. Other noticeable changes are based on: Rafael: Reduce code duplication related to GPE lookup https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/86237/ Rafael: Always use the same lock for GPE locking https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/90471/ A new field gpe_count in struct acpi_gpe_block_info to record the number of individual GPEs in block. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-03-07sysfs: Use sysfs_attr_init and sysfs_bin_attr_init on dynamic attributesEric W. Biederman
These are the non-static sysfs attributes that exist on my test machine. Fix them to use sysfs_attr_init or sysfs_bin_attr_init as appropriate. It simply requires making a sysfs attribute present to see this. So this is a little bit tedious but otherwise not too bad. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2010-02-22ACPI: Use GPE reference counting to support shared GPEsRafael J. Wysocki
ACPI GPEs may map to multiple devices. The current GPE interface only provides a mechanism for enabling and disabling GPEs, making it difficult to change the state of GPEs at runtime without extensive cooperation between devices. Add an API to allow devices to indicate whether or not they want their device's GPE to be enabled for both runtime and wakeup events. Remove the old GPE type handling entirely, which gets rid of various quirks, like the implicit disabling with GPE type setting. This requires a small amount of rework in order to ensure that non-wake GPEs are enabled by default to preserve existing behaviour. Based on patches from Matthew Garrett <mjg@redhat.com>. 2009-04-02ACPI: simplify module_param namespaceRusty Russell
Impact: cleanup Rather than overriding MODULE_PARAM_PREFIX, build via acpi.o so KBUILD_MODNAME is set to "acpi". This is the logical way to do it, even though acpi cannot be a module due to these config options being bool. Those parts of ACPI which can be modular are not built into the acpi "module". 2009-03-27ACPI: call acpi_system_init() explicitly rather than as initcallBjorn Helgaas
This patch makes acpi_init() call acpi_system_init() directly. Previously, both were subsys_initcalls. acpi_system_init() must happen after acpi_init(), and it's better to call it explicitly rather than rely on link ordering. 2008-10-28ACPI: bugfix reporting of event handler statusZhang Rui
Introduce a new flag showing whether the event has an event handler/method. For all the GPEs and Fixed Events, 1. ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_HANDLE is cleared, it's an "invalid" ACPI event. 2. Both ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_HANDLE and ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_DISABLE are set, it's "disabled". 3. Both ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_HANDLE and ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_ENABLE are set, it's "enabled". 4. Both ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_HANDLE and ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_WAKE_ENABLE are set, it's "wake_enabled". 2008-10-20x86: sysfs: kill owner field from attributeParag Warudkar
Tejun's commit 7b595756ec1f49e0049a9e01a1298d53a7faaa15 made sysfs attribute->owner unnecessary. But the field was left in the structure to ease the merge. It's been over a year since that change and it is now time to start killing attribute->owner along with its users - one arch at a time! This patch is attempt #1 to get rid of attribute->owner only for CONFIG_X86_64 or CONFIG_X86_32 . We will deal with other arches later on as and when possible - avr32 will be the next since that is something I can test. Compile (make allyesconfig / make allmodconfig / custom config) and boot tested. akpm: the idea is that we put the declaration of sttribute.owner inside `#ifndef CONFIG_X86'. But that proved to be too ambitious for now because new usages kept on turning up in subsystem trees. Removed a device initialization optimization introduced in 20051216 where the _STA method was not run unless an _INI was also present for the same device. This optimization could cause problems because it could allow _INI methods to be run within a not-present device subtree (If a not-present device had no _INI, _STA would not be run, the not-present status would not be discovered, and the children of the device would be incorrectly traversed.) Implemented a new _STA optimization where namespace subtrees that do not contain _INI are identified and ignored during device initialization. Selectively running _STA can significantly improve boot time on large machines (with assistance from Len Brown.) Implemented support for the device initialization case where the returned _STA flags indicate a device not-present but functioning. In this case, _INI is not run, but the device children are examined for presence, as per the ACPI specification. Implemented an additional change to the IndexField support in order to conform to MS behavior. The value written to the Index Register is not simply a byte offset, it is a byte offset in units of the access width of the parent Index Field. (Fiodor Suietov) Defined and deployed a new OSL interface, acpi_os_validate_address(). This interface is called during the creation of all AML operation regions, and allows the host OS to exert control over what addresses it will allow the AML code to access. Operation Regions whose addresses are disallowed will cause a runtime exception when they are actually accessed (will not affect or abort table loading.) Defined and deployed a new OSL interface, acpi_os_validate_interface(). This interface allows the host OS to match the various "optional" interface/behavior strings for the _OSI predefined control method as appropriate (with assistance from Bjorn Helgaas.) Restructured and corrected various problems in the exception handling code paths within DsCallControlMethod and DsTerminateControlMethod in dsmethod (with assistance from Takayoshi Kochi.) Modified the Linux source converter to ignore quoted string literals while converting identifiers from mixed to lower case. This will correct problems with the disassembler and other areas where such strings must not be modified. The ACPI_FUNCTION_* macros no longer require quotes around the function name. This allows the Linux source converter to convert the names, now that the converter ignores quoted strings. Implemented header file support for the following additional ACPI tables: ASF!, BOOT, CPEP, DBGP, MCFG, SPCR, SPMI, TCPA, and WDRT. With this support, all current and known ACPI tables are now defined in the ACPICA headers and are available for use by device drivers and other software. Implemented support to allow tables that contain ACPI names with invalid characters to be loaded. Previously, this would cause the table load to fail, but since there are several known cases of such tables on existing machines, this change was made to enable ACPI support for them. Also, this matches the behavior of the Microsoft ACPI implementation. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=147621 Fixed a couple regressions introduced during the memory optimization in the 20060317 release. The namespace node definition required additional reorganization and an internal datatype that had been changed to 8-bit was restored to 32-bit. (Valery Podrezov) Fixed a problem where a null pointer passed to acpi_ut_delete_generic_state() could be passed through to acpi_os_release_object which is unexpected. Such null pointers are now trapped and ignored, matching the behavior of the previous implementation before the deployment of acpi_os_release_object(). (Valery Podrezov, Fiodor Suietov) Fixed a memory mapping leak during the deletion of a SystemMemory operation region where a cached memory mapping was not deleted. This became a noticeable problem for operation regions that are defined within frequently used control methods. (Dana Meyers) Reorganized the ACPI table header files into two main files: one for the ACPI tables consumed by the ACPICA core, and another for the miscellaneous ACPI tables that are consumed by the drivers and other software. The various FADT definitions were merged into one common section and three different tables (ACPI 1.0, 1.0+, and 2.0) Signed-off-by: Bob Moore <robert.moore@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
