2017-07-21x86/platform/uv/BAU: Disable BAU on single hub configurationsAndrew Banman
The BAU confers no benefit to a UV system running with only one hub/socket. Permanently disable the BAU driver if there are less than two hubs online to avoid BAU overhead. We have observed failed boots on single-socket UV4 systems caused by BAU that are avoided with this patch. Also, while at it, consolidate initialization error blocks and fix a memory leak. Bug fix for the BAU tunable congested_cycles not being set to the user defined value. Instead of referencing a global variable when deciding on BAU shutdown, a node will reference its own tunable set value ( cong_response_us). This results in the user set tunable value congested_response_us taking effect correctly. 2017-06-05x86/mm: Pass flush_tlb_info to flush_tlb_others() etcAndy Lutomirski
Rather than passing all the contents of flush_tlb_info to flush_tlb_others(), pass a pointer to the structure directly. For consistency, this also removes the unnecessary cpu parameter from uv_flush_tlb_others() to make its signature match the other *flush_tlb_others() functions. This serves two purposes: - It will dramatically simplify future patches that change struct flush_tlb_info, which I'm planning to do. - struct flush_tlb_info is an adequate description of what to do for a local flush, too, so by reusing it we can remove duplicated code between local and remove flushes in a future patch. 2017-05-15x86/tsc: Remodel cyc2ns to use seqcount_latch()Peter Zijlstra
Replace the custom multi-value scheme with the more regular seqcount_latch() scheme. Along with scrapping a lot of lines, the latch scheme is better documented and used in more places. The immediate benefit however is not being limited on the update side. The current code has a limit where the writers block which is hit by future changes. In preparation for making the clockevents core NTP correction aware, all clockevent device drivers must set ->min_delta_ticks and ->max_delta_ticks rather than ->min_delta_ns and ->max_delta_ns: a clockevent device's rate is going to change dynamically and thus, the ratio of ns to ticks ceases to stay invariant. Currently, the x86's uv rtc clockevent device is initialized as follows: clock_event_device_uv.min_delta_ns = NSEC_PER_SEC / sn_rtc_cycles_per_second; clock_event_device_uv.max_delta_ns = clocksource_uv.mask * (NSEC_PER_SEC / sn_rtc_cycles_per_second); This translates to a ->min_delta_ticks value of 1 and a ->max_delta_ticks value of clocksource_uv.mask. Initialize ->min_delta_ticks and ->max_delta_ticks with these values respectively. This patch alone doesn't introduce any change in functionality as the clockevents core still looks exclusively at the (untouched) ->min_delta_ns and ->max_delta_ns. As soon as this has changed, a followup patch will purge the initialization of ->min_delta_ns and ->max_delta_ns from this driver. UV4 does not employ a software-timeout as in previous generations so a new wait_completion routine without this logic is required. Certain completion statuses require the AUX status bit in addition to ERROR and BUSY. Add the read_status routine to construct the full completion status. Use read_status in the uv4_wait_completion routine to handle all possible completion statuses. Remove the present wait_completion routine and add a function pointer by the same name to the bau_operations struct. Rather than switching on the UV hub version during message processing, set the architecture-specific uv*_wait_completion during initialization. 2017-03-13x86/platform/uv/BAU: Add status mmr location fields to bau_controlAndrew Banman
The location of the ERROR and BUSY status bits depends on the descriptor index, i.e. the CPU, of the message. Since this index does not change, there is no need to calculate the mmr and index location during message processing. The less work we do in the hot path the better. Add status_mmr and status_index fields to bau_control and compute their values during initialization. Add kerneldoc descriptions for the new fields. Update uv*_wait_completion to use these fields rather than receiving the information as parameters. Move the bau_operations declaration after bau struct declarations so the bau structs can be referenced when adding new functions to bau_operations. That way we avoid forward declarations of the bau structs. Likewise, move uv*_bau_ops structs down to avoid forward declarations of new functions defined in the same file. Declare these structs __initconst since they are only used during initialization. Similarly, declare the bau_operations ops instance __ro_after_init as it is read-only after initialization. This is a preparatory patch for adding wait_completion to bau_operations. On UV4, the destination agent verifies each message by checking the descriptor qualifier field of the message payload. Messages without this field set to 0x534749 will cause a hub error to assert. Split bau_message_payload into uv1_2_3 and uv4 versions to account for the different payload formats. Enforce the size of each field by using the appropriate u** integer type. Replace extraneous comments with KernelDoc comment. The initialize PCH NMI I/O function is separate and may be moved to BIOS for security reasons. This function detects whether the PCH NMI config has already been done and if not, it will then initialize the PCH here. Printing kernel text addresses in stack dumps is of questionable value, especially now that address randomization is becoming common. It can be a security issue because it leaks kernel addresses. It also affects the usefulness of the stack dump. Linus says: "I actually spend time cleaning up commit messages in logs, because useless data that isn't actually information (random hex numbers) is actively detrimental. It makes commit logs less legible. It also makes it harder to parse dumps. It's not useful. That makes it actively bad. I probably look at more oops reports than most people. I have not found the hex numbers useful for the last five years, because they are just randomized crap. The stack content thing just makes code scroll off the screen etc, for example." The only real downside to removing these addresses is that they can be used to disambiguate duplicate symbol names. However such cases are rare, and the context of the stack dump should be enough to be able to figure it out. 2016-10-20x86/platform/UV: Fix support for EFI_OLD_MEMMAP after BIOS callback updatesAlex Thorlton
Some time ago, we brought our UV BIOS callback code up to speed with the new EFI memory mapping scheme, in commit: d1be84a232e3 ("x86/uv: Update uv_bios_call() to use efi_call_virt_pointer()") By leveraging some changes that I made to a few of the EFI runtime callback mechanisms, in commit: 80e75596079f ("efi: Convert efi_call_virt() to efi_call_virt_pointer()") This got everything running smoothly on UV, with the new EFI mapping code. However, this left one, small loose end, in that EFI_OLD_MEMMAP (a.k.a. efi=old_map) will no longer work on UV, on kernels that include the aforementioned changes. At the time this was not a major issue (in fact, it still really isn't), but there's no reason that EFI_OLD_MEMMAP *shouldn't* work on our systems. This commit adds a check into uv_bios_call(), to see if we have the EFI_OLD_MEMMAP bit set in efi.flags. If it is set, we fall back to using our old callback method, which uses efi_call() directly on the __va() of our function pointer. The BAU on UV4 does not need to maintain the payload queue tail pointer. Do not initialize the tail pointer MMR on UV4. Note that write_payload_tail is not an abstracted BAU function since it is an operation specific to pre-UV4 versions. Then we must switch on the UV version to control its usage, for which we use uvhub_version rather than is_uv*_hub because it is quicker/more concise. Software timeouts are not currently supported on BAU for UV4. Instead, the BAU will rely on hardware-level fairness protocols to determine broadcast timeouts. Many BAU functions have different implementations depending on the UV version. Rather than switching on the uvhub_version throughout the driver, we can define a set of operations for each version. This is especially beneficial for UV4, which will require many new MMR read/write functions. Currently, the set of abstracted functions are the same for UV1, UV2, and UV3. The functions were chosen because each one will have a different implementation for UV4. Other functions will be added as needed to handle new implementations or to cleanup the existing differences between UV1, UV2, and UV3, i.e. read_status and wait_completion. efi_runtime_disabled case This problem has actually been in the UV code for a while, but we didn't catch it until recently, because we had been relying on EFI_OLD_MEMMAP to allow our systems to boot for a period of time. We noticed the issue when trying to kexec a recent community kernel, where we hit this NULL pointer dereference in efi_sync_low_kernel_mappings(): [ 0.337515] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000880 [ 0.346276] IP: [<ffffffff8105df8d>] efi_sync_low_kernel_mappings+0x5d/0x1b0 The problem doesn't show up with EFI_OLD_MEMMAP because we skip the chunk of setup_efi_state() that sets the efi_loader_signature for the kexec'd kernel. When the kexec'd kernel boots, it won't set EFI_BOOT in setup_arch, so we completely avoid the bug. We always kexec with noefi on the command line, so this shouldn't be an issue, but since we're not actually checking for efi_runtime_disabled in uv_bios_init(), we end up trying to do EFI runtime callbacks when we shouldn't be. This patch just adds a check for efi_runtime_disabled in uv_bios_init() so that we don't map in uv_systab when runtime_disabled == true. Historically a lot of these existed because we did not have a distinction between what was modular code and what was providing support to modules via EXPORT_SYMBOL and friends. That changed when we forked out support for the latter into the export.h file. This means we should be able to reduce the usage of module.h in code that is obj-y Makefile or bool Kconfig. The advantage in doing so is that module.h itself sources about 15 other headers; adding significantly to what we feed cpp, and it can obscure what headers we are effectively using. Since module.h was the source for init.h (for __init) and for export.h (for EXPORT_SYMBOL) we consider each obj-y/bool instance for the presence of either and replace as needed. One module.h was converted to moduleparam.h since the file had multiple module_param() in it, and another file had an instance of MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE deleted, since that is a no-op when builtin. Finally, the 32 bit build coverage of olpc_ofw revealed a couple implicit includes, which were pretty self evident to fix based on what gcc was complaining about. 2016-06-27x86/uv: Update uv_bios_call() to use efi_call_virt_pointer()Alex Thorlton
Now that the efi_call_virt() macro has been generalized to be able to use EFI system tables besides efi.systab, we are able to convert our uv_bios_call() wrapper to use this standard EFI callback mechanism. This simple change is part of a much larger effort to recover from some issues with the way we were mapping in some of our MMRs, and the way that we were doing our BIOS callbacks, which were uncovered by commit 67a9108ed431 ("x86/efi: Build our own page table structures"). The first issue that this uncovered was that we were relying on the EFI memory mapping mechanism to map in our MMR space for us, which, while reliable, was technically a bug, as it relied on "undefined" behavior in the mapping code. The reason we were able to piggyback on the EFI memory mapping code to map in our MMRs was because, previously, EFI code used the trampoline_pgd, which shares a few entries with the main kernel pgd. It just so happened, that the memory range containing our MMRs was inside one of those shared regions, which kept our code working without issue for quite a while. Anyways, once we discovered this problem, we brought back our original code to map in the MMRs with commit: 08914f436bdd ("x86/platform/UV: Bring back the call to map_low_mmrs in uv_system_init") This got our systems a little further along, but we were still running into trouble with our EFI callbacks, which prevented us from booting all the way up. Our first step towards fixing the BIOS callbacks was to get our uv_bios_call() wrapper updated to use efi_call_virt() instead of the plain efi_call(). The previous patch took care of the effort needed to make that possible. Along the way, we hit a major issue with some confusion about how to properly pull arguments higher than number 6 off the stack in the efi_call() code, which resulted in the following commit from Linus: 683ad8092cd2 ("x86/efi: Fix 7-parameter efi_call()s") Now that all of those issues are out of the way, we're able to make this simple change to use the new efi_call_virt_pointer() in uv_bios_call() which gets our machines booting, running properly, and able to execute our callbacks with 6+ arguments. Note that, since we are now using the EFI page table when we make our function call, we are no longer able to make the call using the __va() of our function pointer, since the memory range containing that address isn't mapped into the EFI page table. For now, we will use the physical address of the function directly, since that is mapped into the EFI page table. In the near future, we're going to get some code added in to properly update our function pointer to its virtual address during SetVirtualAddressMap.
