2017-12-14KVM: x86: MMU: make array audit_point_name staticColin Ian King
The array audit_point_name is local to the source and does not need to be in global scope, so make it static. Cleans up sparse warning: arch/x86/kvm/mmu_audit.c:22:12: warning: symbol 'audit_point_name' was not declared. Should it be static? 2017-08-24KVM: MMU: Add 5 level EPT & Shadow page table support.Yu Zhang
Extends the shadow paging code, so that 5 level shadow page table can be constructed if VM is running in 5 level paging mode. Also extends the ept code, so that 5 level ept table can be constructed if maxphysaddr of VM exceeds 48 bits. Unlike the shadow logic, KVM should still use 4 level ept table for a VM whose physical address width is less than 48 bits, even when the VM is running in 5 level paging mode. 2017-08-24KVM: MMU: Rename PT64_ROOT_LEVEL to PT64_ROOT_4LEVEL.Yu Zhang
Now we have 4 level page table and 5 level page table in 64 bits long mode, let's rename the PT64_ROOT_LEVEL to PT64_ROOT_4LEVEL, then we can use PT64_ROOT_5LEVEL for 5 level page table, it's helpful to make the code more clear. Also PT64_ROOT_MAX_LEVEL is defined as 4, so that we can just redefine it to 5 whenever a replacement is needed for 5 level paging. 2016-01-15kvm: rename pfn_t to kvm_pfn_tDan Williams
To date, we have implemented two I/O usage models for persistent memory, PMEM (a persistent "ram disk") and DAX (mmap persistent memory into userspace). This series adds a third, DAX-GUP, that allows DAX mappings to be the target of direct-i/o. It allows userspace to coordinate DMA/RDMA from/to persistent memory. The implementation leverages the ZONE_DEVICE mm-zone that went into 4.3-rc1 (also discussed at kernel summit) to flag pages that are owned and dynamically mapped by a device driver. The pmem driver, after mapping a persistent memory range into the system memmap via devm_memremap_pages(), arranges for DAX to distinguish pfn-only versus page-backed pmem-pfns via flags in the new pfn_t type. The DAX code, upon seeing a PFN_DEV+PFN_MAP flagged pfn, flags the resulting pte(s) inserted into the process page tables with a new _PAGE_DEVMAP flag. Later, when get_user_pages() is walking ptes it keys off _PAGE_DEVMAP to pin the device hosting the page range active. Finally, get_page() and put_page() are modified to take references against the device driver established page mapping. Finally, this need for "struct page" for persistent memory requires memory capacity to store the memmap array. Given the memmap array for a large pool of persistent may exhaust available DRAM introduce a mechanism to allocate the memmap from persistent memory. The new "struct vmem_altmap *" parameter to devm_memremap_pages() enables arch_add_memory() to use reserved pmem capacity rather than the page allocator. This patch (of 18): The core has developed a need for a "pfn_t" type [1]. Move the existing pfn_t in KVM to kvm_pfn_t [2]. 2015-11-25KVM: x86: MMU: Remove is_rmap_spte() and use is_shadow_present_pte()Takuya Yoshikawa
is_rmap_spte(), originally named is_rmap_pte(), was introduced when the simple reverse mapping was implemented by commit cd4a4e5374110444 ("[PATCH] KVM: MMU: Implement simple reverse mapping"). At that point, its role was clear and only rmap_add() and rmap_remove() were using it to select sptes that need to be reverse-mapped. Independently of that, is_shadow_present_pte() was first introduced by commit c7addb902054195b ("KVM: Allow not-present guest page faults to bypass kvm") to do bypass_guest_pf optimization, which does not exist any more. These two seem to have changed their roles somewhat, and is_rmap_spte() just calls is_shadow_present_pte() now. Since using both of them without clear distinction just makes the code confusing, remove is_rmap_spte(). 2015-06-05KVM: x86: add SMM to the MMU role, support SMRAM address spacePaolo Bonzini
This is now very simple to do. The only interesting part is a simple trick to find the right memslot in gfn_to_rmap, retrieving the address space from the spte role word. The same trick is used in the auditing code. The comment on top of union kvm_mmu_page_role has been stale forever, so remove it. Speaking of stale code, remove pad_for_nice_hex_output too: it was splitting the "access" bitfield across two bytes and thus had effectively turned into pad_for_ugly_hex_output. 2015-06-05KVM: x86: use vcpu-specific functions to read/write/translate GFNsPaolo Bonzini
We need to hide SMRAM from guests not running in SMM. Therefore, all uses of kvm_read_guest* and kvm_write_guest* must be changed to check whether the VCPU is in system management mode and use a different set of memslots. Switch from kvm_* to the newly-introduced kvm_vcpu_*, which call into kvm_arch_vcpu_memslots_id. Reviewed-by: Radim Krčmář <rkrcmar@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
2015-06-05KVM: x86: pass struct kvm_mmu_page to gfn_to_rmapPaolo Bonzini
This is always available (with one exception in the auditing code), and with the same auditing exception the level was coming from sp->role.level. Later, the spte's role will also be used to look up the right memslots array. Reviewed-by: Radim Krčmář <rkrcmar@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
2015-05-28kernel/params: constify struct kernel_param_ops usesLuis R. Rodriguez
Most code already uses consts for the struct kernel_param_ops, sweep the kernel for the last offending stragglers. Other than include/linux/moduleparam.h and kernel/params.c all other changes were generated with the following Coccinelle SmPL patch. Merge conflicts between trees can be handled with Coccinelle. In the future git could get Coccinelle merge support to deal with patch --> fail --> grammar --> Coccinelle --> new patch conflicts automatically for us on patches where the grammar is available and the patch is of high confidence. 2012-04-08KVM: MMU: Improve iteration through sptes from rmapTakuya Yoshikawa
Iteration using rmap_next(), the actual body is pte_list_next(), is inefficient: every time we call it we start from checking whether rmap holds a single spte or points to a descriptor which links more sptes. In the case of shadow paging, this quadratic total iteration cost is a problem. Even for two dimensional paging, with EPT/NPT on, in which we almost always have a single mapping, the extra checks at the end of the iteration should be eliminated. This patch fixes this by introducing rmap_iterator which keeps the iteration context for the next search. Furthermore the implementation of rmap_next() is splitted into two functions, rmap_get_first() and rmap_get_next(), to avoid repeatedly checking whether the rmap being iterated on has only one spte. Although there seemed to be only a slight change for EPT/NPT, the actual improvement was significant: we observed that GET_DIRTY_LOG for 1GB dirty memory became 15% faster than before. This is probably because the new code is easy to make branch predictions. Note: we just remove pte_list_next() because we can think of parent_ptes as a reverse mapping. 2012-02-24static keys: Introduce 'struct static_key', static_key_true()/false() and ↵Ingo Molnar
static_key_slow_[inc|dec]() So here's a boot tested patch on top of Jason's series that does all the cleanups I talked about and turns jump labels into a more intuitive to use facility. It should also address the various misconceptions and confusions that surround jump labels. Typical usage scenarios: #include <linux/static_key.h> struct static_key key = STATIC_KEY_INIT_TRUE; if (static_key_false(&key)) do unlikely code else do likely code Or: if (static_key_true(&key)) do likely code else do unlikely code The static key is modified via: static_key_slow_inc(&key); ... static_key_slow_dec(&key); The 'slow' prefix makes it abundantly clear that this is an expensive operation. I've updated all in-kernel code to use this everywhere. Note that I (intentionally) have not pushed through the rename blindly through to the lowest levels: the actual jump-label patching arch facility should be named like that, so we want to decouple jump labels from the static-key facility a bit. On non-jump-label enabled architectures static keys default to likely()/unlikely() branches.
