2016-06-17sparc/PCI: Implement pci_resource_to_user() with pcibios_resource_to_bus()Bjorn Helgaas
"User" addresses are shown in /sys/devices/pci.../.../resource and /proc/bus/pci/devices and used as mmap offsets for /proc/bus/pci/BB/DD.F files. On sparc, these are PCI bus addresses, i.e., raw BAR values. Previously pci_resource_to_user() computed the user address by subtracting either pbm->io_space.start or pbm->mem_space.start from the resource start. We've already told the PCI core about those offsets here: pci_scan_one_pbm() pci_add_resource_offset(&resources, &pbm->io_space, pbm->io_space.start); pci_add_resource_offset(&resources, &pbm->mem_space, pbm->mem_space.start); pci_add_resource_offset(&resources, &pbm->mem64_space, pbm->mem_space.start); so pcibios_resource_to_bus() knows how to do that translation. Replace the pci_resource_to_user() declarations in each arch that defines HAVE_ARCH_PCI_RESOURCE_TO_USER with a single one in linux/pci.h. Change the MIPS static inline implementation to a non-inline version so the static inline doesn't conflict with the new non-static linux/pci.h declaration. No functional change intended. Implement FETCH-OP atomic primitives, these are very similar to the existing OP-RETURN primitives we already have, except they return the value of the atomic variable _before_ modification. This is especially useful for irreversible operations -- such as bitops (because it becomes impossible to reconstruct the state prior to modification). 2016-06-14locking/spinlock, arch: Update and fix spin_unlock_wait() implementationsPeter Zijlstra
This patch updates/fixes all spin_unlock_wait() implementations. The update is in semantics; where it previously was only a control dependency, we now upgrade to a full load-acquire to match the store-release from the spin_unlock() we waited on. This ensures that when spin_unlock_wait() returns, we're guaranteed to observe the full critical section we waited on. This fixes a number of spin_unlock_wait() users that (not unreasonably) rely on this. I also fixed a number of ticket lock versions to only wait on the current lock holder, instead of for a full unlock, as this is sufficient. Furthermore; again for ticket locks; I added an smp_rmb() in between the initial ticket load and the spin loop testing the current value because I could not convince myself the address dependency is sufficient, esp. if the loads are of different sizes. I'm more than happy to remove this smp_rmb() again if people are certain the address dependency does indeed work as expected. Removing the macro fixes the build problem, and for consistency, this also removes the RTC_ALWAYS_BCD macro and the comment for both. In this way, the fault handler doesn't have to know if it was a spill or a fill that it's handling the fault for. It just always branches to the last instruction in the parent trap's handler. For example, for a regular fault, the code goes: winfix_trampoline: rdpr %tpc, %g3 or %g3, 0x7c, %g3 wrpr %g3, %tnpc done All window trap handlers are 0x80 aligned, so if we "or" 0x7c into the trap time program counter, we'll get that final instruction in the trap handler. On return from trap, we have to pull the register window in but we do this by hand instead of just executing a "restore" instruction for several reasons. The largest being that from Niagara and onward we simply don't have enough levels in the trap stack to fully resolve all possible exception cases of a window fault when we are already at trap level 1 (which we enter to get ready to return from the original trap). This is executed inline via the FILL_*_RTRAP handlers. rtrap_64.S's code branches directly to these to do the window fill by hand if necessary. Now if you look at them, we'll see at the end: ba,a,pt %xcc, user_rtt_fill_fixup; ba,a,pt %xcc, user_rtt_fill_fixup; ba,a,pt %xcc, user_rtt_fill_fixup; And oops, all three cases are handled like a fault. This doesn't work because each of these trap types (data access exception, memory address unaligned, and faults) store their auxiliary info in different registers to pass on to the C handler which does the real work. So in the case where the stack was unaligned, the unaligned trap handler sets up the arg registers one way, and then we branched to the fault handler which expects them setup another way. 2016-05-25sparc64: Take ctx_alloc_lock properly in hugetlb_setup().David S. Miller
On cheetahplus chips we take the ctx_alloc_lock in order to modify the TLB lookup parameters for the indexed TLBs, which are stored in the context register. This is called with interrupts disabled, however ctx_alloc_lock is an IRQ safe lock, therefore we must take acquire/release it properly with spin_{lock,unlock}_irq(). During hugepage map/unmap, TSB and TLB flushes are currently issued at every PAGE_SIZE'd boundary which is unnecessary. We now issue the flush at REAL_HPAGE_SIZE boundaries only. Without this patch workloads which unmap a large hugepage backed VMA region get CPU lockups due to excessive TLB flush calls. 2016-05-20lib/GCD.c: use binary GCD algorithm instead of EuclideanZhaoxiu Zeng
The binary GCD algorithm is based on the following facts: 1. If a and b are all evens, then gcd(a,b) = 2 * gcd(a/2, b/2) 2. If a is even and b is odd, then gcd(a,b) = gcd(a/2, b) 3. If a and b are all odds, then gcd(a,b) = gcd((a-b)/2, b) = gcd((a+b)/2, b) Even on x86 machines with reasonable division hardware, the binary algorithm runs about 25% faster (80% the execution time) than the division-based Euclidian algorithm. On platforms like Alpha and ARMv6 where division is a function call to emulation code, it's even more significant. There are two variants of the code here, depending on whether a fast __ffs (find least significant set bit) instruction is available. This allows the unpredictable branches in the bit-at-a-time shifting loop to be eliminated. If fast __ffs is not available, the "even/odd" GCD variant is used. 2016-05-20printk/nmi: generic solution for safe printk in NMIPetr Mladek
printk() takes some locks and could not be used a safe way in NMI context. The chance of a deadlock is real especially when printing stacks from all CPUs. This particular problem has been addressed on x86 by the commit a9edc8809328 ("x86/nmi: Perform a safe NMI stack trace on all CPUs"). The patchset brings two big advantages. First, it makes the NMI backtraces safe on all architectures for free. Second, it makes all NMI messages almost safe on all architectures (the temporary buffer is limited. We still should keep the number of messages in NMI context at minimum). Note that there already are several messages printed in NMI context: WARN_ON(in_nmi()), BUG_ON(in_nmi()), anything being printed out from MCE handlers. These are not easy to avoid. This patch reuses most of the code and makes it generic. It is useful for all messages and architectures that support NMI. The alternative printk_func is set when entering and is reseted when leaving NMI context. It queues IRQ work to copy the messages into the main ring buffer in a safe context. __printk_nmi_flush() copies all available messages and reset the buffer. Then we could use a simple cmpxchg operations to get synchronized with writers. There is also used a spinlock to get synchronized with other flushers. We do not longer use seq_buf because it depends on external lock. It would be hard to make all supported operations safe for a lockless use. It would be confusing and error prone to make only some operations safe. The code is put into separate printk/nmi.c as suggested by Steven Rostedt. It needs a per-CPU buffer and is compiled only on architectures that call nmi_enter(). This is achieved by the new HAVE_NMI Kconfig flag. The are MN10300 and Xtensa architectures. We need to clean up NMI handling there first. Let's do it separately. Based on recent thread on linux-arch (some weeks ago) I decided to check how much work was required to build sparc32 with STRICT_MM_TYPECHECKS enabled. The resulting binary (checked srmmu.o) was to my suprise smaller with STRICT_MM_TYPECHECKS defined, than without. As I have no working gear to test sparc32 bits at for the moment, I did not enable STRICT_MM_TYPECHECKS - but was tempeted to do so. Fix this so we pass the trap_level from the actual trap code like we do in sparc64. Add use on ENTRY(), ENDPROC() in the assembler function too. This fixes a bug where the hardcoded value for trap_level was the sparc64 value. I've just discovered that the useful-sounding has_transparent_hugepage() is actually an architecture-dependent minefield: on some arches it only builds if CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE=y, on others it's also there when not, but on some of those (arm and arm64) it then gives the wrong answer; and on mips alone it's marked __init, which would crash if called later (but so far it has not been called later). Straighten this out: make it available to all configs, with a sensible default in asm-generic/pgtable.h, removing its definitions from those arches (arc, arm, arm64, sparc, tile) which are served by the default, adding #define has_transparent_hugepage has_transparent_hugepage to those (mips, powerpc, s390, x86) which need to override the default at runtime, and removing the __init from mips (but maybe that kind of code should be avoided after init: set a static variable the first time it's called). We will use it to count how many addresses are in the entry->ip[] array, excluding PERF_CONTEXT_{KERNEL,USER,etc} entries, so that we can really return the number of entries specified by the user via the relevant sysctl, kernel.perf_event_max_contexts, or via the per event perf_event_attr.sample_max_stack knob. This way we keep the perf_sample->ip_callchain->nr meaning, that is the number of entries, be it real addresses or PERF_CONTEXT_ entries, while honouring the max_stack knobs, i.e. the end result will be max_stack entries if we have at least that many entries in a given stack trace. 2016-04-27sparc64: Fix bootup regressions on some Kconfig combinations.David S. Miller
The system call tracing bug fix mentioned in the Fixes tag below increased the amount of assembler code in the sequence of assembler files included by head_64.S This caused to total set of code to exceed 0x4000 bytes in size, which overflows the expression in head_64.S that works to place swapper_tsb at address 0x408000. When this is violated, the TSB is not properly aligned, and also the trap table is not aligned properly either. All of this together results in failed boots. So, do two things: 1) Simplify some code by using ba,a instead of ba/nop to get those bytes back. 2) Add a linker script assertion to make sure that if this happens again the build will fail. 2016-04-27perf core: Allow setting up max frame stack depth via sysctlArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
The default remains 127, which is good for most cases, and not even hit most of the time, but then for some cases, as reported by Brendan, 1024+ deep frames are appearing on the radar for things like groovy, ruby. And in some workloads putting a _lower_ cap on this may make sense. One that is per event still needs to be put in place tho. The new file is: # cat /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack 127 Chaging it: # echo 256 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack # cat /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack 256 But as soon as there is some event using callchains we get: # echo 512 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack -bash: echo: write error: Device or resource busy # Because we only allocate the callchain percpu data structures when there is a user, which allows for changing the max easily, its just a matter of having no callchain users at that point. 2016-04-21sparc/pci: Refactor dev_archdata initialization into pci_init_dev_archdataSowmini Varadhan
The function pcibios_add_device() added by commit d0c31e020057 ("sparc/PCI: Fix for panic while enabling SR-IOV") initializes the dev_archdata by doing a memcpy from the PF. This has the problem that it erroneously copies the OF device without explicitly refcounting it. As David Miller pointed out: "Generally speaking we don't really support hot-plug for OF probed devices, but if we did all of the device tree pointers have to be refcounted properly." SR-IOV code looks for arch specific data while enabling VFs. When VF device is added, driver probe function makes set of calls to initialize the pci device. Because the VF device is added different way than the normal PF device(which happens via of_create_pci_dev for sparc), some of the arch specific initialization does not happen for VF device. That causes panic when archdata is accessed. To fix this, I have used already defined weak function pcibios_setup_device to copy archdata from PF to VF. Also verified the fix. KASAN needs to know whether the allocation happens in an IRQ handler. This lets us strip everything below the IRQ entry point to reduce the number of unique stack traces needed to be stored. Move the definition of __irq_entry to <linux/interrupt.h> so that the users don't need to pull in <linux/ftrace.h>. Also introduce the __softirq_entry macro which is similar to __irq_entry, but puts the corresponding functions to the .softirqentry.text section. 2016-03-22sparc/compat: provide an accurate in_compat_syscall implementationAndy Lutomirski
On sparc64 compat-enabled kernels, any task can make 32-bit and 64-bit syscalls. is_compat_task returns true in 32-bit tasks, which does not necessarily imply that the current syscall is 32-bit. Provide an in_compat_syscall implementation that checks whether the current syscall is compat. As far as I know, sparc is the only architecture on which is_compat_task checks the compat status of the task and on which the compat status of a syscall can differ from the compat status of the task. On x86, is_compat_task checks the syscall type, not the task type.
