2019-06-19s390: replace defconfig with performance_defconfigHeiko Carstens
Replace defconfig with performance_defconfig. defconfig had some more or less random debug options enabled, where nobody knows why anymore. Just remove the old defconfig and replace it with performance_defconfig, which reduces the number of configs to maintain. A config with debugging options enabled is debug_defconfig which is supposed to be rather close to performance_defconfig except that is has debug options enabled. 2019-06-15kbuild: add CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL and loosen the dependency of samplesMasahiro Yamada
Commit 5318321d367c ("samples: disable CONFIG_SAMPLES for UML") used a big hammer to fix the build errors under the samples/ directory. Only some samples actually include uapi headers from usr/include. Introduce CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL since 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' is clearer than 'depends on !UML'. If this option is enabled, uapi headers are installed before starting directory descending. I added 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' to per-sample CONFIG options. This allows UML to compile some samples. $ make ARCH=um allmodconfig samples/ [ snip ] CC [M] samples/configfs/configfs_sample.o CC [M] samples/kfifo/bytestream-example.o CC [M] samples/kfifo/dma-example.o CC [M] samples/kfifo/inttype-example.o CC [M] samples/kfifo/record-example.o CC [M] samples/kobject/kobject-example.o CC [M] samples/kobject/kset-example.o CC [M] samples/trace_events/trace-events-sample.o CC [M] samples/trace_printk/trace-printk.o AR samples/vfio-mdev/built-in.a AR samples/built-in.a Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com>

2019-06-07s390/configs: remove useless UEVENT_HELPER_PATHKrzysztof Kozlowski
Remove the CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH because: 1. It is disabled since commit 1be01d4a5714 ("driver: base: Disable CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER by default") as its dependency (UEVENT_HELPER) was made default to 'n', 2. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Certain userland specifically requests it to be disabled (systemd README: "Legacy hotplug slows down the system and confuses udev"). 2019-05-14s390: move arch/s390/defconfig to arch/s390/configs/defconfigMasahiro Yamada
As of Linux 5.1, alpha and s390 are the last architectures that have defconfig in arch/*/ instead of arch/*/configs/. $ find arch -name defconfig | sort arch/alpha/defconfig arch/arm64/configs/defconfig arch/csky/configs/defconfig arch/nds32/configs/defconfig arch/riscv/configs/defconfig arch/s390/defconfig The arch/$(ARCH)/defconfig is the hard-coded default in Kconfig, and I want to deprecate it after evacuating the remaining defconfig into the standard location, arch/*/configs/. 2018-09-04crypto: x86 - remove SHA multibuffer routines and mcryptdArd Biesheuvel
As it turns out, the AVX2 multibuffer SHA routines are currently broken [0], in a way that would have likely been noticed if this code were in wide use. Since the code is too complicated to be maintained by anyone except the original authors, and since the performance benefits for real-world use cases are debatable to begin with, it is better to drop it entirely for the moment. This patch introcudes a new kernel module pkey which is providing protected key handling and management functions. The pkey API is available within the kernel for other s390 specific code to create and manage protected keys. Additionally the functions are exported to user space via IOCTL calls. 2016-08-30mm/usercopy: get rid of CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKSJosh Poimboeuf
There are three usercopy warnings which are currently being silenced for gcc 4.6 and newer: 1) "copy_from_user() buffer size is too small" compile warning/error This is a static warning which happens when object size and copy size are both const, and copy size > object size. I didn't see any false positives for this one. So the function warning attribute seems to be working fine here. Note this scenario is always a bug and so I think it should be changed to *always* be an error, regardless of CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS. 2) "copy_from_user() buffer size is not provably correct" compile warning This is another static warning which happens when I enable __compiletime_object_size() for new compilers (and CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS). It happens when object size is const, but copy size is *not*. In this case there's no way to compare the two at build time, so it gives the warning. (Note the warning is a byproduct of the fact that gcc has no way of knowing whether the overflow function will be called, so the call isn't dead code and the warning attribute is activated.) So this warning seems to only indicate "this is an unusual pattern, maybe you should check it out" rather than "this is a bug". I get 102(!) of these warnings with allyesconfig and the __compiletime_object_size() gcc check removed. I don't know if there are any real bugs hiding in there, but from looking at a small sample, I didn't see any. According to Kees, it does sometimes find real bugs. But the false positive rate seems high. 3) "Buffer overflow detected" runtime warning This is a runtime warning where object size is const, and copy size > object size. All three warnings (both static and runtime) were completely disabled for gcc 4.6 with the following commit: 2fb0815c9ee6 ("gcc4: disable __compiletime_object_size for GCC 4.6+") That commit mistakenly assumed that the false positives were caused by a gcc bug in __compiletime_object_size(). But in fact, __compiletime_object_size() seems to be working fine. The false positives were instead triggered by #2 above. (Though I don't have an explanation for why the warnings supposedly only started showing up in gcc 4.6.) So remove warning #2 to get rid of all the false positives, and re-enable warnings #1 and #3 by reverting the above commit. Furthermore, since #1 is a real bug which is detected at compile time, upgrade it to always be an error. Having done all that, CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS is no longer needed.
