2014-08-29KVM: static inline empty kvm_arch functionsRadim Krčmář
Using static inline is going to save few bytes and cycles. For example on powerpc, the difference is 700 B after stripping. (5 kB before) This patch also deals with two overlooked empty functions: kvm_arch_flush_shadow was not removed from arch/mips/kvm/mips.c 2df72e9bc KVM: split kvm_arch_flush_shadow and kvm_arch_sched_in never made it into arch/ia64/kvm/kvm-ia64.c. e790d9ef6 KVM: add kvm_arch_sched_in Signed-off-by: Radim Krčmář <rkrcmar@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
2014-08-29KVM: forward declare structs in kvm_types.hPaolo Bonzini
Opaque KVM structs are useful for prototypes in asm/kvm_host.h, to avoid "'struct foo' declared inside parameter list" warnings (and consequent breakage due to conflicting types). Move them from individual files to a generic place in linux/kvm_types.h. Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
2014-08-26ia64: Replace __get_cpu_var usesChristoph Lameter
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to __this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. Increment/Decrement etc of a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); __get_cpu_var(y)++ Converts to __this_cpu_inc(y) Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Cc: Fenghua Yu <fenghua.yu@intel.com> Cc: linux-ia64@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Christoph Lameter <cl@linux.com> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>

2014-08-08kexec: load and relocate purgatory at kernel load timeVivek Goyal
Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location. Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory relocation code in kexec-tools. Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in purgatory. Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent bootloaders can make use of it. Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of second kernel etc. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Cc: Eric Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Cc: H. 2014-08-08arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate areaAndy Lutomirski
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. 2014-07-30timekeeping: Fixup typo in update_vsyscall_old definitionJohn Stultz
In commit 4a0e637738f0 ("clocksource: Get rid of cycle_last"), currently in the -tip tree, there was a small typo where cycles_t was used intstead of cycle_t. This broke ppc64 builds. Fix this by using the proper cycle_t type for this usage, in both the definition and the ia64 implementation. Now, having both cycle_t and cycles_t types seems like a very bad idea just asking for these sorts of issues. But that will be a cleanup for another day. 2014-07-29[IA64] sn: Do not needlessly convert between pointers and integersThierry Reding
The nasid_to_try variable is an array of integers, so plain integers can be used when assigning values to the elements rather than casting a NULL pointer to an integer, which results in the following warning from GCC: arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:117:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:125:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ Replace (int)NULL with a simple 0 to silence these warnings. 2014-07-21ACPI / processor: Introduce ARCH_MIGHT_HAVE_ACPI_PDCHanjun Guo
The use of _PDC is deprecated in ACPI 3.0 in favor of _OSC, as ARM platform is supported only in ACPI 5.0 or higher version, _PDC will not be used in ARM platform, so make Make _PDC only for platforms with Intel CPUs. Introduce ARCH_MIGHT_HAVE_ACPI_PDC and move _PDC related code in ACPI processor driver into a single file processor_pdc.c, make x86 and ia64 select it when ACPI is enabled. This patch also use pr_* to replace printk to fix the checkpatch warning and factor acpi_processor_alloc_pdc() a little bit to avoid duplicate pr_err() code. 2014-07-21ACPI: Don't use acpi_lapic in ACPI core codeGraeme Gregory
Now ARM64 support is being added to ACPI so architecture specific values can not be used in core ACPI code. Following on the patch "ACPI / processor: Check if LAPIC is present during initialization" which uses acpi_lapic in acpi_processor.c, on ARM64 platform, GIC is used instead of local APIC, so acpi_lapic is not a suitable value for ARM64. What is actually important at this point is if there is/are CPU entry/entries (Local APIC/SAPIC, GICC) in MADT, so introduce acpi_has_cpu_in_madt() to be arch specific and generic. 2014-07-18arch/ia64: Define early_memunmap()Daniel Kiper
This is odd to use early_iounmap() function do tear down mapping created by early_memremap() function, even if it works right now, because they belong to different set of functions. The former is I/O related function and the later is memory related. So, create early_memunmap() macro which in real is early_iounmap(). This thing will help to not confuse code readers longer by mixing functions from different classes. EFI patches following this patch uses that functionality. 2014-07-18kbuild: allow to override Python command nameMasahiro Yamada
The specification of Python 3 is largely different from that of Python 2. For example, arch/ia64/scripts/unwcheck.py seems to be written in Python 2, not compatible with Python 3. It is not a good idea to invoke python scripts with the hard-coded command name 'python'. The command 'python' could possibly be Python 3 on some systems. For that case, it is reasonable to allow to override the command name by giving 'PYTHON=python2' from the command line. The 'python' in arch/ia64/Makefile should be replaced with '$(PYTHON)'. 2014-07-17arch, locking: Ciao arch_mutex_cpu_relax()Davidlohr Bueso
The arch_mutex_cpu_relax() function, introduced by 34b133f, is hacky and ugly. It was added a few years ago to address the fact that common cpu_relax() calls include yielding on s390, and thus impact the optimistic spinning functionality of mutexes. Nowadays we use this function well beyond mutexes: rwsem, qrwlock, mcs and lockref. Since the macro that defines the call is in the mutex header, any users must include mutex.h and the naming is misleading as well. This patch (i) renames the call to cpu_relax_lowlatency ("relax, but only if you can do it with very low latency") and (ii) defines it in each arch's asm/processor.h local header, just like for regular cpu_relax functions. On all archs, except s390, cpu_relax_lowlatency is simply cpu_relax, and thus we can take it out of mutex.h. While this can seem redundant, I believe it is a good choice as it allows us to move out arch specific logic from generic locking primitives and enables future(?) archs to transparently define it, similarly to System Z. 2014-07-10x86, ia64: Move EFI_FB vga_default_device() initialization to pci_vga_fixup()Bruno Prémont
Commit b4aa0163056b ("efifb: Implement vga_default_device() (v2)") added efifb vga_default_device() so EFI systems that do not load shadow VBIOS or setup VGA get proper value for boot_vga PCI sysfs attribute on the corresponding PCI device. Xorg doesn't detect devices when boot_vga=0, e.g., on some EFI systems such as MacBookAir2,1. Xorg detects the GPU and finds the DRI device but then bails out with "no devices detected". Note: When vga_default_device() is set boot_vga PCI sysfs attribute reflects its state. When unset this attribute is 1 whenever IORESOURCE_ROM_SHADOW flag is set. With introduction of sysfb/simplefb/simpledrm efifb is getting obsolete while having native drivers for the GPU also makes selecting sysfb/efifb optional. Remove the efifb implementation of vga_default_device() and initialize vgaarb's vga_default_device() with the PCI GPU that matches boot screen_info in pci_fixup_video(). 2014-06-16ACPI / ia64 / sba_iommu: Restore the working initialization orderingRafael J. Wysocki
Commit 66345d5f79fc (ACPI / ia64 / sba_iommu: Use ACPI scan handler for device discovery) changed the ordering of SBA (System Bus Adapter) IOMMU initialization with respect to the PCI host bridge initialization which broke things inadvertently, because the SBA IOMMU initialization code has to run after the PCI host bridge has been initialized. Fix that by reworking the SBA IOMMU ACPI scan handler so that it claims the discovered matching ACPI device objects without attempting to initialize anything and move the entire SBA IOMMU initialization to sba_init() that runs after the PCI bus has been enumerated. 2014-06-04mm: disable zone_reclaim_mode by defaultMel Gorman
When it was introduced, zone_reclaim_mode made sense as NUMA distances punished and workloads were generally partitioned to fit into a NUMA node. NUMA machines are now common but few of the workloads are NUMA-aware and it's routine to see major performance degradation due to zone_reclaim_mode being enabled but relatively few can identify the problem. Those that require zone_reclaim_mode are likely to be able to detect when it needs to be enabled and tune appropriately so lets have a sensible default for the bulk of users. This patch (of 2): zone_reclaim_mode causes processes to prefer reclaiming memory from local node instead of spilling over to other nodes. This made sense initially when NUMA machines were almost exclusively HPC and the workload was partitioned into nodes. The NUMA penalties were sufficiently high to justify reclaiming the memory. On current machines and workloads it is often the case that zone_reclaim_mode destroys performance but not all users know how to detect this. Favour the common case and disable it by default. Users that are sophisticated enough to know they need zone_reclaim_mode will detect it. 2014-06-04hugetlb: restrict hugepage_migration_support() to x86_64Naoya Horiguchi
Currently hugepage migration is available for all archs which support pmd-level hugepage, but testing is done only for x86_64 and there're bugs for other archs. So to avoid breaking such archs, this patch limits the availability strictly to x86_64 until developers of other archs get interested in enabling this feature. Simply disabling hugepage migration on non-x86_64 archs is not enough to fix the reported problem where sys_move_pages() hits the BUG_ON() in follow_page(FOLL_GET), so let's fix this by checking if hugepage migration is supported in vma_migratable(). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm into next Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "ACPICA is the leader this time (63 commits), followed by cpufreq (28 commits), devfreq (15 commits), system suspend/hibernation (12 commits), ACPI video and ACPI device enumeration (10 commits each). We have no major new features this time, but there are a few significant changes of how things work. The most visible one will probably be that we are now going to create platform devices rather than PNP devices by default for ACPI device objects with _HID. That was long overdue and will be really necessary to be able to use the same drivers for the same hardware blocks on ACPI and DT-based systems going forward. We're not expecting fallout from this one (as usual), but it's something to watch nevertheless. The second change having a chance to be visible is that ACPI video will now default to using native backlight rather than the ACPI backlight interface which should generally help systems with broken Win8 BIOSes. We're hoping that all problems with the native backlight handling that we had previously have been addressed and we are in a good enough shape to flip the default, but this change should be easy enough to revert if need be. In addition to that, the system suspend core has a new mechanism to allow runtime-suspended devices to stay suspended throughout system suspend/resume transitions if some extra conditions are met (generally, they are related to coordination within device hierarchy). However, enabling this feature requires cooperation from the bus type layer and for now it has only been implemented for the ACPI PM domain (used by ACPI-enumerated platform devices mostly today). Also, the acpidump utility that was previously shipped as a separate tool will now be provided by the upstream ACPICA along with the rest of ACPICA code, which will allow it to be more up to date and better supported, and we have one new cpuidle driver (ARM clps711x). The rest is improvements related to certain specific use cases, cleanups and fixes all over the place. Specifics: - ACPICA update to upstream version 20140424. That includes a number of fixes and improvements related to things like GPE handling, table loading, headers, memory mapping and unmapping, DSDT/SSDT overriding, and the Unload() operator. The acpidump utility from upstream ACPICA is included too. From Bob Moore, Lv Zheng, David Box, David Binderman, and Colin Ian King. - Fixes and cleanups related to ACPI video and backlight interfaces from Hans de Goede. That includes blacklist entries for some new machines and using native backlight by default. - ACPI device enumeration changes to create platform devices rather than PNP devices for ACPI device objects with _HID by default. PNP devices will still be created for the ACPI device object with device IDs corresponding to real PNP devices, so that change should not break things left and right, and we're expecting to see more and more ACPI-enumerated platform devices in the future. From Zhang Rui and Rafael J Wysocki. - Updates for the ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver allowing it to handle system suspend/resume on Asus T100 correctly. From Heikki Krogerus and Rafael J Wysocki. - PM core update introducing a mechanism to allow runtime-suspended devices to stay suspended over system suspend/resume transitions if certain additional conditions related to coordination within device hierarchy are met. Related PM documentation update and ACPI PM domain support for the new feature. From Rafael J Wysocki. - Fixes and improvements related to the "freeze" sleep state. They affect several places including cpuidle, PM core, ACPI core, and the ACPI battery driver.
