git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rw/misc Pull arch signal handling cleanup from Richard Weinberger: "This patch series moves all remaining archs to the get_signal(), signal_setup_done() and sigsp() functions. Currently these archs use open coded variants of the said functions. Further, unused parameters get removed from get_signal_to_deliver(), tracehook_signal_handler() and signal_delivered(). At the end of the day we save around 500 lines of code." * 'signal-cleanup' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rw/misc: (43 commits) powerpc: Use sigsp() openrisc: Use sigsp() mn10300: Use sigsp() mips: Use sigsp() microblaze: Use sigsp() metag: Use sigsp() m68k: Use sigsp() m32r: Use sigsp() hexagon: Use sigsp() frv: Use sigsp() cris: Use sigsp() c6x: Use sigsp() blackfin: Use sigsp() avr32: Use sigsp() arm64: Use sigsp() arc: Use sigsp() sas_ss_flags: Remove nested ternary if Rip out get_signal_to_deliver() Clean up signal_delivered() tracehook_signal_handler: Remove sig, info, ka and regs ...

2014-08-08kexec: load and relocate purgatory at kernel load timeVivek Goyal
Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location. Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory relocation code in kexec-tools. Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in purgatory. Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent bootloaders can make use of it. Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of second kernel etc. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Cc: Eric Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Cc: H. 2014-08-08arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate areaAndy Lutomirski
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. Pull second round of KVM changes from Paolo Bonzini: "Here are the PPC and ARM changes for KVM, which I separated because they had small conflicts (respectively within KVM documentation, and with 3.16-rc changes). Since they were all within the subsystem, I took care of them. Stephen Rothwell reported some snags in PPC builds, but they are all fixed now; the latest linux-next report was clean. New features for ARM include: - KVM VGIC v2 emulation on GICv3 hardware - Big-Endian support for arm/arm64 (guest and host) - Debug Architecture support for arm64 (arm32 is on Christoffer's todo list) And for PPC: - Book3S: Good number of LE host fixes, enable HV on LE - Book3S HV: Add in-guest debug support This release drops support for KVM on the PPC440. As a result, the PPC merge removes more lines than it adds. :) I also included an x86 change, since Davidlohr tied it to an independent bug report and the reporter quickly provided a Tested-by; there was no reason to wait for -rc2" * tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm: (122 commits) KVM: Move more code under CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQFD KVM: nVMX: fix "acknowledge interrupt on exit" when APICv is in use KVM: nVMX: Fix nested vmexit ack intr before load vmcs01 KVM: PPC: Enable IRQFD support for the XICS interrupt controller KVM: Give IRQFD its own separate enabling Kconfig option KVM: Move irq notifier implementation into eventfd.c KVM: Move all accesses to kvm::irq_routing into irqchip.c KVM: irqchip: Provide and use accessors for irq routing table KVM: Don't keep reference to irq routing table in irqfd struct KVM: PPC: drop duplicate tracepoint arm64: KVM: fix 64bit CP15 VM access for 32bit guests KVM: arm64: GICv3: mandate page-aligned GICV region arm64: KVM: GICv3: move system register access to msr_s/mrs_s KVM: PPC: PR: Handle FSCR feature deselects KVM: PPC: HV: Remove generic instruction emulation KVM: PPC: BOOKEHV: rename e500hv_spr to bookehv_spr KVM: PPC: Remove DCR handling KVM: PPC: Expose helper functions for data/inst faults KVM: PPC: Separate loadstore emulation from priv emulation KVM: PPC: Handle magic page in kvmppc_ld/st ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "Again, ACPICA leads the pack (47 commits), followed by cpufreq (18 commits) and system suspend/hibernation (9 commits). From the new code perspective, the ACPICA update brings ACPI 5.1 to the table, including a new device configuration object called _DSD (Device Specific Data) that will hopefully help us to operate device properties like Device Trees do (at least to some extent) and changes related to supporting ACPI on ARM. Apart from that we have hibernation changes making it use radix trees to store memory bitmaps which should speed up some operations carried out by it quite significantly. We also have some power management changes related to suspend-to-idle (the "freeze" sleep state) support and more preliminary changes needed to support ACPI on ARM (outside of ACPICA). The rest is fixes and cleanups pretty much everywhere. Specifics: - ACPICA update to upstream version 20140724. That includes ACPI 5.1 material (support for the _CCA and _DSD predefined names, changes related to the DMAR and PCCT tables and ARM support among other things) and cleanups related to using ACPICA's header files. A major part of it is related to acpidump and the core code used by that utility. Changes from Bob Moore, David E Box, Lv Zheng, Sascha Wildner, Tomasz Nowicki, Hanjun Guo. - Radix trees for memory bitmaps used by the hibernation core from Joerg Roedel. - Support for waking up the system from suspend-to-idle (also known as the "freeze" sleep state) using ACPI-based PCI wakeup signaling (Rafael J Wysocki). - Fixes for issues related to ACPI button events (Rafael J Wysocki). - New device ID for an ACPI-enumerated device included into the Wildcat Point PCH from Jie Yang. - ACPI video updates related to backlight handling from Hans de Goede and Linus Torvalds. - Preliminary changes needed to support ACPI on ARM from Hanjun Guo and Graeme Gregory. - ACPI PNP core cleanups from Arjun Sreedharan and Zhang Rui. - Cleanups related to ACPI_COMPANION() and ACPI_HANDLE() macros (Rafael J Wysocki). - ACPI-based device hotplug cleanups from Wei Yongjun and Rafael J Wysocki. - Cleanups and improvements related to system suspend from Lan Tianyu, Randy Dunlap and Rafael J Wysocki. - ACPI battery cleanup from Wei Yongjun. - cpufreq core fixes from Viresh Kumar. - Elimination of a deadband effect from the cpufreq ondemand governor and intel_pstate driver cleanups from Stratos Karafotis. - 350MHz CPU support for the powernow-k6 cpufreq driver from Mikulas Patocka. - Fix for the imx6 cpufreq driver from Anson Huang. - cpuidle core and governor cleanups from Daniel Lezcano, Sandeep Tripathy and Mohammad Merajul Islam Molla. - Build fix for the big_little cpuidle driver from Sachin Kamat. - Configuration fix for the Operation Performance Points (OPP) framework from Mark Brown. - APM cleanup from Jean Delvare. - cpupower utility fixes and cleanups from Peter Senna Tschudin, Andrey Utkin, Himangi Saraogi, Rickard Strandqvist, Thomas Renninger" * tag 'pm+acpi-3.17-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm: (118 commits) ACPI / LPSS: add LPSS device for Wildcat Point PCH ACPI / PNP: Replace faulty is_hex_digit() by isxdigit() ACPICA: Update version to 20140724. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull timer and time updates from Thomas Gleixner: "A rather large update of timers, timekeeping & co - Core timekeeping code is year-2038 safe now for 32bit machines. Now we just need to fix all in kernel users and the gazillion of user space interfaces which rely on timespec/timeval :) - Better cache layout for the timekeeping internal data structures. - Proper nanosecond based interfaces for in kernel users. - Tree wide cleanup of code which wants nanoseconds but does hoops and loops to convert back and forth from timespecs. Some of it definitely belongs into the ugly code museum. - Consolidation of the timekeeping interface zoo. - A fast NMI safe accessor to clock monotonic for tracing. This is a long standing request to support correlated user/kernel space traces. With proper NTP frequency correction it's also suitable for correlation of traces accross separate machines. - Checkpoint/restart support for timerfd. - A few NOHZ[_FULL] improvements in the [hr]timer code. - Code move from kernel to kernel/time of all time* related code. - New clocksource/event drivers from the ARM universe. I'm really impressed that despite an architected timer in the newer chips SoC manufacturers insist on inventing new and differently broken SoC specific timers. [ Ed. "Impressed"? 2014-08-05KVM: Give IRQFD its own separate enabling Kconfig optionPaul Mackerras
Currently, the IRQFD code is conditional on CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING. So that we can have the IRQFD code compiled in without having the IRQ routing code, this creates a new CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQFD, makes the IRQFD code conditional on it instead of CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING, and makes all the platforms that currently select HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING also select HAVE_KVM_IRQFD. 2014-07-30timekeeping: Fixup typo in update_vsyscall_old definitionJohn Stultz
In commit 4a0e637738f0 ("clocksource: Get rid of cycle_last"), currently in the -tip tree, there was a small typo where cycles_t was used intstead of cycle_t. This broke ppc64 builds. Fix this by using the proper cycle_t type for this usage, in both the definition and the ia64 implementation. Now, having both cycle_t and cycles_t types seems like a very bad idea just asking for these sorts of issues. But that will be a cleanup for another day. 2014-07-29[IA64] sn: Do not needlessly convert between pointers and integersThierry Reding
The nasid_to_try variable is an array of integers, so plain integers can be used when assigning values to the elements rather than casting a NULL pointer to an integer, which results in the following warning from GCC: arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:117:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:125:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ Replace (int)NULL with a simple 0 to silence these warnings. The use of _PDC is deprecated in ACPI 3.0 in favor of _OSC, as ARM platform is supported only in ACPI 5.0 or higher version, _PDC will not be used in ARM platform, so make Make _PDC only for platforms with Intel CPUs. Introduce ARCH_MIGHT_HAVE_ACPI_PDC and move _PDC related code in ACPI processor driver into a single file processor_pdc.c, make x86 and ia64 select it when ACPI is enabled. 2014-07-21ACPI: Don't use acpi_lapic in ACPI core codeGraeme Gregory
Now ARM64 support is being added to ACPI so architecture specific values can not be used in core ACPI code. Following on the patch "ACPI / processor: Check if LAPIC is present during initialization" which uses acpi_lapic in acpi_processor.c, on ARM64 platform, GIC is used instead of local APIC, so acpi_lapic is not a suitable value for ARM64. What is actually important at this point is if there is/are CPU entry/entries (Local APIC/SAPIC, GICC) in MADT, so introduce acpi_has_cpu_in_madt() to be arch specific and generic. 2014-07-18arch/ia64: Define early_memunmap()Daniel Kiper
This is odd to use early_iounmap() function do tear down mapping created by early_memremap() function, even if it works right now, because they belong to different set of functions. The former is I/O related function and the later is memory related. So, create early_memunmap() macro which in real is early_iounmap(). 2014-07-17arch, locking: Ciao arch_mutex_cpu_relax()Davidlohr Bueso
The arch_mutex_cpu_relax() function, introduced by 34b133f, is hacky and ugly. It was added a few years ago to address the fact that common cpu_relax() calls include yielding on s390, and thus impact the optimistic spinning functionality of mutexes. Nowadays we use this function well beyond mutexes: rwsem, qrwlock, mcs and lockref. Since the macro that defines the call is in the mutex header, any users must include mutex.h and the naming is misleading as well. This patch (i) renames the call to cpu_relax_lowlatency ("relax, but only if you can do it with very low latency") and (ii) defines it in each arch's asm/processor.h local header, just like for regular cpu_relax functions. On all archs, except s390, cpu_relax_lowlatency is simply cpu_relax, and thus we can take it out of mutex.h. While this can seem redundant, I believe it is a good choice as it allows us to move out arch specific logic from generic locking primitives and enables future(?) archs to transparently define it, similarly to System Z. 2014-07-10x86, ia64: Move EFI_FB vga_default_device() initialization to pci_vga_fixup()Bruno Prémont
Commit b4aa0163056b ("efifb: Implement vga_default_device() (v2)") added efifb vga_default_device() so EFI systems that do not load shadow VBIOS or setup VGA get proper value for boot_vga PCI sysfs attribute on the corresponding PCI device. Xorg doesn't detect devices when boot_vga=0, e.g., on some EFI systems such as MacBookAir2,1. Xorg detects the GPU and finds the DRI device but then bails out with "no devices detected". Note: When vga_default_device() is set boot_vga PCI sysfs attribute reflects its state. When unset this attribute is 1 whenever IORESOURCE_ROM_SHADOW flag is set. With introduction of sysfb/simplefb/simpledrm efifb is getting obsolete while having native drivers for the GPU also makes selecting sysfb/efifb optional. Remove the efifb implementation of vga_default_device() and initialize vgaarb's vga_default_device() with the PCI GPU that matches boot screen_info in pci_fixup_video(). 2014-06-16ACPI / ia64 / sba_iommu: Restore the working initialization orderingRafael J. Wysocki
Commit 66345d5f79fc (ACPI / ia64 / sba_iommu: Use ACPI scan handler for device discovery) changed the ordering of SBA (System Bus Adapter) IOMMU initialization with respect to the PCI host bridge initialization which broke things inadvertently, because the SBA IOMMU initialization code has to run after the PCI host bridge has been initialized. Fix that by reworking the SBA IOMMU ACPI scan handler so that it claims the discovered matching ACPI device objects without attempting to initialize anything and move the entire SBA IOMMU initialization to sba_init() that runs after the PCI bus has been enumerated. 2014-06-04mm: disable zone_reclaim_mode by defaultMel Gorman
When it was introduced, zone_reclaim_mode made sense as NUMA distances punished and workloads were generally partitioned to fit into a NUMA node. NUMA machines are now common but few of the workloads are NUMA-aware and it's routine to see major performance degradation due to zone_reclaim_mode being enabled but relatively few can identify the problem. Those that require zone_reclaim_mode are likely to be able to detect when it needs to be enabled and tune appropriately so lets have a sensible default for the bulk of users. This patch (of 2): zone_reclaim_mode causes processes to prefer reclaiming memory from local node instead of spilling over to other nodes. This made sense initially when NUMA machines were almost exclusively HPC and the workload was partitioned into nodes. The NUMA penalties were sufficiently high to justify reclaiming the memory. On current machines and workloads it is often the case that zone_reclaim_mode destroys performance but not all users know how to detect this. Favour the common case and disable it by default. Users that are sophisticated enough to know they need zone_reclaim_mode will detect it. 2014-06-04hugetlb: restrict hugepage_migration_support() to x86_64Naoya Horiguchi
Currently hugepage migration is available for all archs which support pmd-level hugepage, but testing is done only for x86_64 and there're bugs for other archs. So to avoid breaking such archs, this patch limits the availability strictly to x86_64 until developers of other archs get interested in enabling this feature. Simply disabling hugepage migration on non-x86_64 archs is not enough to fix the reported problem where sys_move_pages() hits the BUG_ON() in follow_page(FOLL_GET), so let's fix this by checking if hugepage migration is supported in vma_migratable(). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm into next Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "ACPICA is the leader this time (63 commits), followed by cpufreq (28 commits), devfreq (15 commits), system suspend/hibernation (12 commits), ACPI video and ACPI device enumeration (10 commits each). We have no major new features this time, but there are a few significant changes of how things work. The most visible one will probably be that we are now going to create platform devices rather than PNP devices by default for ACPI device objects with _HID. That was long overdue and will be really necessary to be able to use the same drivers for the same hardware blocks on ACPI and DT-based systems going forward. We're not expecting fallout from this one (as usual), but it's something to watch nevertheless. The second change having a chance to be visible is that ACPI video will now default to using native backlight rather than the ACPI backlight interface which should generally help systems with broken Win8 BIOSes. We're hoping that all problems with the native backlight handling that we had previously have been addressed and we are in a good enough shape to flip the default, but this change should be easy enough to revert if need be. In addition to that, the system suspend core has a new mechanism to allow runtime-suspended devices to stay suspended throughout system suspend/resume transitions if some extra conditions are met (generally, they are related to coordination within device hierarchy). However, enabling this feature requires cooperation from the bus type layer and for now it has only been implemented for the ACPI PM domain (used by ACPI-enumerated platform devices mostly today). Also, the acpidump utility that was previously shipped as a separate tool will now be provided by the upstream ACPICA along with the rest of ACPICA code, which will allow it to be more up to date and better supported, and we have one new cpuidle driver (ARM clps711x). The rest is improvements related to certain specific use cases, cleanups and fixes all over the place. Specifics: - ACPICA update to upstream version 20140424. That includes a number of fixes and improvements related to things like GPE handling, table loading, headers, memory mapping and unmapping, DSDT/SSDT overriding, and the Unload() operator. The acpidump utility from upstream ACPICA is included too. From Bob Moore, Lv Zheng, David Box, David Binderman, and Colin Ian King. - Fixes and cleanups related to ACPI video and backlight interfaces from Hans de Goede. That includes blacklist entries for some new machines and using native backlight by default. - ACPI device enumeration changes to create platform devices rather than PNP devices for ACPI device objects with _HID by default. PNP devices will still be created for the ACPI device object with device IDs corresponding to real PNP devices, so that change should not break things left and right, and we're expecting to see more and more ACPI-enumerated platform devices in the future. From Zhang Rui and Rafael J Wysocki. - Updates for the ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver allowing it to handle system suspend/resume on Asus T100 correctly. From Heikki Krogerus and Rafael J Wysocki. - PM core update introducing a mechanism to allow runtime-suspended devices to stay suspended over system suspend/resume transitions if certain additional conditions related to coordination within device hierarchy are met. Related PM documentation update and ACPI PM domain support for the new feature. From Rafael J Wysocki. - Fixes and improvements related to the "freeze" sleep state. They affect several places including cpuidle, PM core, ACPI core, and the ACPI battery driver. From Rafael J Wysocki and Zhang Rui. - Miscellaneous fixes and updates of the ACPI core from Aaron Lu, Bjørn Mork, Hanjun Guo, Lan Tianyu, and Rafael J Wysocki. - Fixes and cleanups for the ACPI processor and ACPI PAD (Processor Aggregator Device) drivers from Baoquan He, Manuel Schölling, Tony Camuso, and Toshi Kani. - System suspend/resume optimization in the ACPI battery driver from Lan Tianyu. - OPP (Operating Performance Points) subsystem updates from Chander Kashyap, Mark Brown, and Nishanth Menon. - cpufreq core fixes, updates and cleanups from Srivatsa S Bhat, Stratos Karafotis, and Viresh Kumar. - Updates, fixes and cleanups for the Tegra, powernow-k8, imx6q, s5pv210, nforce2, and powernv cpufreq drivers from Brian Norris, Jingoo Han, Paul Bolle, Philipp Zabel, Stratos Karafotis, and Viresh Kumar. - intel_pstate driver fixes and cleanups from Dirk Brandewie, Doug Smythies, and Stratos Karafotis. - Enabling the big.LITTLE cpufreq driver on arm64 from Mark Brown. - Fix for the cpuidle menu governor from Chander Kashyap. - New ARM clps711x cpuidle driver from Alexander Shiyan. - Hibernate core fixes and cleanups from Chen Gang, Dan Carpenter, Fabian Frederick, Pali Rohár, and Sebastian Capella. - Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) driver updates from Jacob Pan. - PNP subsystem updates from Bjorn Helgaas and Fabian Frederick. - devfreq core updates from Chanwoo Choi and Paul Bolle. - devfreq updates for exynos4 and exynos5 from Chanwoo Choi and Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz. - turbostat tool fix from Jean Delvare. - cpupower tool updates from Prarit Bhargava, Ramkumar Ramachandra and Thomas Renninger. - New ACPI ec_access.c tool for poking at the EC in a safe way from Thomas Renninger" * tag 'pm+acpi-3.16-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm: (187 commits) ACPICA: Namespace: Remove _PRP method support. intel_pstate: Improve initial busy calculation intel_pstate: add sample time scaling intel_pstate: Correct rounding in busy calculation intel_pstate: Remove C0 tracking PM / hibernate: fixed typo in comment ACPI: Fix x86 regression related to early mapping size limitation ACPICA: Tables: Add mechanism to control early table checksum verification.
