2016-01-14mm: rework virtual memory accountingKonstantin Khlebnikov
When inspecting a vague code inside prctl(PR_SET_MM_MEM) call (which testing the RLIMIT_DATA value to figure out if we're allowed to assign new @start_brk, @brk, @start_data, @end_data from mm_struct) it's been commited that RLIMIT_DATA in a form it's implemented now doesn't do anything useful because most of user-space libraries use mmap() syscall for dynamic memory allocations. Linus suggested to convert RLIMIT_DATA rlimit into something suitable for anonymous memory accounting. But in this patch we go further, and the changes are bundled together as: * keep vma counting if CONFIG_PROC_FS=n, will be used for limits * replace mm->shared_vm with better defined mm->data_vm * account anonymous executable areas as executable * account file-backed growsdown/up areas as stack * drop struct file* argument from vm_stat_account * enforce RLIMIT_DATA for size of data areas This way code looks cleaner: now code/stack/data classification depends only on vm_flags state: VM_EXEC & ~VM_WRITE -> code (VmExe + VmLib in proc) VM_GROWSUP | VM_GROWSDOWN -> stack (VmStk) VM_WRITE & ~VM_SHARED & !stack -> data (VmData) The rest (VmSize - VmData - VmStk - VmExe - VmLib) could be called "shared", but that might be strange beast like readonly-private or VM_IO area. - RLIMIT_AS limits whole address space "VmSize" - RLIMIT_STACK limits stack "VmStk" (but each vma individually) - RLIMIT_DATA now limits "VmData" Signed-off-by: Konstantin Khlebnikov <koct9i@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Cyrill Gorcunov <gorcunov@openvz.org> Cc: Quentin Casasnovas <quentin.casasnovas@oracle.com> Cc: Vegard Nossum <vegard.nossum@oracle.com> Acked-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Willy Tarreau <w@1wt.eu> Cc: Andy Lutomirski <luto@amacapital.net> Cc: Kees Cook <keescook@google.com> Cc: Vladimir Davydov <vdavydov@virtuozzo.com> Cc: Pavel Emelyanov <xemul@virtuozzo.com> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2015-12-23ia64: ftrace: Fix the comments for ftrace_modify_code()Li Bin
There is no need to worry about module and __init text disappearing case, because that ftrace has a module notifier that is called when a module is being unloaded and before the text goes away and this code grabs the ftrace_lock mutex and removes the module functions from the ftrace list, such that it will no longer do any modifications to that module's text, the update to make functions be traced or not is done under the ftrace_lock mutex as well. And by now, __init section codes should not been modified by ftrace, because it is black listed in recordmcount.c and ignored by ftrace. 2015-09-08mm: rename alloc_pages_exact_node() to __alloc_pages_node()Vlastimil Babka
alloc_pages_exact_node() was introduced in commit 6484eb3e2a81 ("page allocator: do not check NUMA node ID when the caller knows the node is valid") as an optimized variant of alloc_pages_node(), that doesn't fallback to current node for nid == NUMA_NO_NODE. Unfortunately the name of the function can easily suggest that the allocation is restricted to the given node and fails otherwise. In truth, the node is only preferred, unless __GFP_THISNODE is passed among the gfp flags. The misleading name has lead to mistakes in the past, see for example commits 5265047ac301 ("mm, thp: really limit transparent hugepage allocation to local node") and b360edb43f8e ("mm, mempolicy: migrate_to_node should only migrate to node"). Another issue with the name is that there's a family of alloc_pages_exact*() functions where 'exact' means exact size (instead of page order), which leads to more confusion. To prevent further mistakes, this patch effectively renames alloc_pages_exact_node() to __alloc_pages_node() to better convey that it's an optimized variant of alloc_pages_node() not intended for general usage. Both functions get described in comments. It has been also considered to really provide a convenience function for allocations restricted to a node, but the major opinion seems to be that __GFP_THISNODE already provides that functionality and we shouldn't duplicate the API needlessly. The number of users would be small anyway. Existing callers of alloc_pages_exact_node() are simply converted to call __alloc_pages_node(), with the exception of sba_alloc_coherent() which open-codes the check for NUMA_NO_NODE, so it is converted to use alloc_pages_node() instead. This means it no longer performs some VM_BUG_ON checks, and since the current check for nid in alloc_pages_node() uses a 'nid < 0' comparison (which includes NUMA_NO_NODE), it may hide wrong values which would be previously exposed. Both differences will be rectified by the next patch. To sum up, this patch makes no functional changes, except temporarily hiding potentially buggy callers. Restricting the checks in alloc_pages_node() is left for the next patch which can in turn expose more existing buggy callers. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams: "This update has successfully completed a 0day-kbuild run and has appeared in a linux-next release. The changes outside of the typical drivers/nvdimm/ and drivers/acpi/nfit.[ch] paths are related to the removal of IORESOURCE_CACHEABLE, the introduction of memremap(), and the introduction of ZONE_DEVICE + devm_memremap_pages(). Summary: - Introduce ZONE_DEVICE and devm_memremap_pages() as a generic mechanism for adding device-driver-discovered memory regions to the kernel's direct map. This facility is used by the pmem driver to enable pfn_to_page() operations on the page frames returned by DAX ('direct_access' in 'struct block_device_operations'). For now, the 'memmap' allocation for these "device" pages comes from "System RAM". Support for allocating the memmap from device memory will arrive in a later kernel. - Introduce memremap() to replace usages of ioremap_cache() and ioremap_wt(). memremap() drops the __iomem annotation for these mappings to memory that do not have i/o side effects. The replacement of ioremap_cache() with memremap() is limited to the pmem driver to ease merging the api change in v4.3. Completion of the conversion is targeted for v4.4. - Similar to the usage of memcpy_to_pmem() + wmb_pmem() in the pmem driver, update the VFS DAX implementation and PMEM api to provide persistence guarantees for kernel operations on a DAX mapping. - Convert the ACPI NFIT 'BLK' driver to map the block apertures as cacheable to improve performance. - Miscellaneous updates and fixes to libnvdimm including support for issuing "address range scrub" commands, clarifying the optimal 'sector size' of pmem devices, a clarification of the usage of the ACPI '_STA' (status) property for DIMM devices, and other minor fixes" * tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm: (34 commits) libnvdimm, pmem: direct map legacy pmem by default libnvdimm, pmem: 'struct page' for pmem libnvdimm, pfn: 'struct page' provider infrastructure x86, pmem: clarify that ARCH_HAS_PMEM_API implies PMEM mapped WB add devm_memremap_pages mm: ZONE_DEVICE for "device memory" mm: move __phys_to_pfn and __pfn_to_phys to asm/generic/memory_model.h dax: drop size parameter to ->direct_access() nd_blk: change aperture mapping from WC to WB nvdimm: change to use generic kvfree() pmem, dax: have direct_access use __pmem annotation dax: update I/O path to do proper PMEM flushing pmem: add copy_from_iter_pmem() and clear_pmem() pmem, x86: clean up conditional pmem includes pmem: remove layer when calling arch_has_wmb_pmem() pmem, x86: move x86 PMEM API to new pmem.h header libnvdimm, e820: make CONFIG_X86_PMEM_LEGACY a tristate option pmem: switch to devm_ allocations devres: add devm_memremap libnvdimm, btt: write and validate parent_uuid ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/djbw/nvdimm Pull libnvdimm subsystem from Dan Williams: "The libnvdimm sub-system introduces, in addition to the libnvdimm-core, 4 drivers / enabling modules: NFIT: Instantiates an "nvdimm bus" with the core and registers memory devices (NVDIMMs) enumerated by the ACPI 6.0 NFIT (NVDIMM Firmware Interface table). After registering NVDIMMs the NFIT driver then registers "region" devices. A libnvdimm-region defines an access mode and the boundaries of persistent memory media. A region may span multiple NVDIMMs that are interleaved by the hardware memory controller. In turn, a libnvdimm-region can be carved into a "namespace" device and bound to the PMEM or BLK driver which will attach a Linux block device (disk) interface to the memory. PMEM: Initially merged in v4.1 this driver for contiguous spans of persistent memory address ranges is re-worked to drive PMEM-namespaces emitted by the libnvdimm-core. In this update the PMEM driver, on x86, gains the ability to assert that writes to persistent memory have been flushed all the way through the caches and buffers in the platform to persistent media. See memcpy_to_pmem() and wmb_pmem(). BLK: This new driver enables access to persistent memory media through "Block Data Windows" as defined by the NFIT. The primary difference of this driver to PMEM is that only a small window of persistent memory is mapped into system address space at any given point in time. Per-NVDIMM windows are reprogrammed at run time, per-I/O, to access different portions of the media. BLK-mode, by definition, does not support DAX. BTT: This is a library, optionally consumed by either PMEM or BLK, that converts a byte-accessible namespace into a disk with atomic sector update semantics (prevents sector tearing on crash or power loss). The sinister aspect of sector tearing is that most applications do not know they have a atomic sector dependency. At least today's disk's rarely ever tear sectors and if they do one almost certainly gets a CRC error on access. NVDIMMs will always tear and always silently. Until an application is audited to be robust in the presence of sector-tearing the usage of BTT is recommended. 2015-06-22Merge branch 'x86-core-for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull x86 core updates from Ingo Molnar: "There were so many changes in the x86/asm, x86/apic and x86/mm topics in this cycle that the topical separation of -tip broke down somewhat - so the result is a more traditional architecture pull request, collected into the 'x86/core' topic. The topics were still maintained separately as far as possible, so bisectability and conceptual separation should still be pretty good - but there were a handful of merge points to avoid excessive dependencies (and conflicts) that would have been poorly tested in the end. The next cycle will hopefully be much more quiet (or at least will have fewer dependencies). The main changes in this cycle were: * x86/apic changes, with related IRQ core changes: (Jiang Liu, Thomas Gleixner) - This is the second and most intrusive part of changes to the x86 interrupt handling - full conversion to hierarchical interrupt domains: [IOAPIC domain] ----- | [MSI domain] --------[Remapping domain] ----- [ Vector domain ] | (optional) | [HPET MSI domain] ----- | | [DMAR domain] ----------------------------- | [Legacy domain] ----------------------------- This now reflects the actual hardware and allowed us to distangle the domain specific code from the underlying parent domain, which can be optional in the case of interrupt remapping. It's a clear separation of functionality and removes quite some duct tape constructs which plugged the remap code between ioapic/msi/hpet and the vector management. - Intel IOMMU IRQ remapping enhancements, to allow direct interrupt injection into guests (Feng Wu) * x86/asm changes: - Tons of cleanups and small speedups, micro-optimizations. This is in preparation to move a good chunk of the low level entry code from assembly to C code (Denys Vlasenko, Andy Lutomirski, Brian Gerst) - Moved all system entry related code to a new home under arch/x86/entry/ (Ingo Molnar) - Removal of the fragile and ugly CFI dwarf debuginfo annotations. Conversion to C will reintroduce many of them - but meanwhile they are only getting in the way, and the upstream kernel does not rely on them (Ingo Molnar) - NOP handling refinements. (Borislav Petkov) * x86/mm changes: - Big PAT and MTRR rework: making the code more robust and preparing to phase out exposing direct MTRR interfaces to drivers - in favor of using PAT driven interfaces (Toshi Kani, Luis R Rodriguez, Borislav Petkov) - New ioremap_wt()/set_memory_wt() interfaces to support Write-Through cached memory mappings. This is especially important for good performance on NVDIMM hardware (Toshi Kani) * x86/ras changes: - Add support for deferred errors on AMD (Aravind Gopalakrishnan) This is an important RAS feature which adds hardware support for poisoned data. That means roughly that the hardware marks data which it has detected as corrupted but wasn't able to correct, as poisoned data and raises an APIC interrupt to signal that in the form of a deferred error. It is the OS's responsibility then to take proper recovery action and thus prolonge system lifetime as far as possible. - Add support for Intel "Local MCE"s: upcoming CPUs will support CPU-local MCE interrupts, as opposed to the traditional system- wide broadcasted MCE interrupts (Ashok Raj) - Misc cleanups (Borislav Petkov) * x86/platform changes: - Intel Atom SoC updates ... and lots of other cleanups, fixlets and other changes - see the shortlog and the Git log for details" * 'x86-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (222 commits) x86/hpet: Use proper hpet device number for MSI allocation x86/hpet: Check for irq==0 when allocating hpet MSI interrupts x86/mm/pat, drivers/infiniband/ipath: Use arch_phys_wc_add() and require PAT disabled x86/mm/pat, drivers/media/ivtv: Use arch_phys_wc_add() and require PAT disabled x86/platform/intel/baytrail: Add comments about why we disabled HPET on Baytrail genirq: Prevent crash in irq_move_irq() genirq: Enhance irq_data_to_desc() to support hierarchy irqdomain iommu, x86: Properly handle posted interrupts for IOMMU hotplug iommu, x86: Provide irq_remapping_cap() interface iommu, x86: Setup Posted-Interrupts capability for Intel iommu iommu, x86: Add cap_pi_support() to detect VT-d PI capability iommu, x86: Avoid migrating VT-d posted interrupts iommu, x86: Save the mode (posted or remapped) of an IRTE iommu, x86: Implement irq_set_vcpu_affinity for intel_ir_chip iommu: dmar: Provide helper to copy shared irte fields iommu: dmar: Extend struct irte for VT-d Posted-Interrupts iommu: Add new member capability to struct irq_remap_ops x86/asm/entry/64: Disentangle error_entry/exit gsbase/ebx/usermode code x86/asm/entry/32: Shorten __audit_syscall_entry() args preparation x86/asm/entry/32: Explain reloading of registers after __audit_syscall_entry() ...

2015-05-27e820, efi: add ACPI 6.0 persistent memory typesDan Williams
ACPI 6.0 formalizes e820-type-7 and efi-type-14 as persistent memory. Mark it "reserved" and allow it to be claimed by a persistent memory device driver. This definition is in addition to the Linux kernel's existing type-12 definition that was recently added in support of shipping platforms with NVDIMM support that predate ACPI 6.0 (which now classifies type-12 as OEM reserved). Note, /proc/iomem can be consulted for differentiating legacy "Persistent Memory (legacy)" E820_PRAM vs standard "Persistent Memory" E820_PMEM. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm64/linux Pull initial ACPI support for arm64 from Will Deacon: "This series introduces preliminary ACPI 5.1 support to the arm64 kernel using the "hardware reduced" profile. We don't support any peripherals yet, so it's fairly limited in scope: - MEMORY init (UEFI) - ACPI discovery (RSDP via UEFI) - CPU init (FADT) - GIC init (MADT) - SMP boot (MADT + PSCI) - ACPI Kconfig options (dependent on EXPERT) ACPI for arm64 has been in development for a while now and hardware has been available that can boot with either FDT or ACPI tables. This has been made possible by both changes to the ACPI spec to cater for ARM-based machines (known as "hardware-reduced" in ACPI parlance) but also a Linaro-driven effort to get this supported on top of the Linux kernel. This pull request is the result of that work. These changes allow us to initialise the CPUs, interrupt controller, and timers via ACPI tables, with memory information and cmdline coming from EFI. We don't support a hybrid ACPI/FDT scheme. Of course, there is still plenty of work to do (a serial console would be nice!) but I expect that to happen on a per-driver basis after this core series has been merged. Anyway, the diff stat here is fairly horrible, but splitting this up and merging it via all the different subsystems would have been extremely painful. Instead, we've got all the relevant Acks in place and I've not seen anything other than trivial (Kconfig) conflicts in -next (for completeness, I've included my resolution below). Nearly half of the insertions fall under Documentation/. So, we'll see how this goes. 2015-03-26ACPI / processor: Introduce phys_cpuid_t for CPU hardware IDCatalin Marinas
CPU hardware ID (phys_id) is defined as u32 in structure acpi_processor, but phys_id is used as int in acpi processor driver, so it will lead to some inconsistence for the drivers. Furthermore, to cater for ACPI arch ports that implement 64 bits CPU ids a generic CPU physical id type is required. So introduce typedef u32 phys_cpuid_t in a common file, and introduce a macro PHYS_CPUID_INVALID as (phys_cpuid_t)(-1) if it's not defined by other archs, this will solve the inconsistence in acpi processor driver, and will prepare for the ACPI on ARM64 for the 64 bit CPU hardware ID in the following patch. 2015-02-12all arches, signal: move restart_block to struct task_structAndy Lutomirski
If an attacker can cause a controlled kernel stack overflow, overwriting the restart block is a very juicy exploit target. This is because the restart_block is held in the same memory allocation as the kernel stack. Moving the restart block to struct task_struct prevents this exploit by making the restart_block harder to locate. Note that there are other fields in thread_info that are also easy targets, at least on some architectures. It's also a decent simplification, since the restart code is more or less identical on all architectures.
