FRV does not require a ZONE_DMA, so all DMA'able pages that aren't highmem should be in ZONE_NORMAL. Signed-off-by: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-02-14[PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future enhancments harder. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-02-11[PATCH] optional ZONE_DMA: introduce CONFIG_ZONE_DMAChristoph Lameter
This patch simply defines CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches. We later do special things with CONFIG_ZONE_DMA after the VM and an arch are prepared to work without ZONE_DMA. CONFIG_ZONE_DMA can be defined in two ways depending on how an architecture handles ISA DMA. First if CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA is set by the arch then we know that the arch needs ZONE_DMA because ISA DMA devices are supported. We can catch this in mm/Kconfig and do not need to modify arch code. Second, arches may use ZONE_DMA in an unknown way. We set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches that do not set CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA in order to insure backwards compatibility. The arches may later undefine ZONE_DMA if their arch code has been verified to not depend on ZONE_DMA. 2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. 2006-12-07[PATCH] mm: pagefault_{disable,enable}()Peter Zijlstra
Introduce pagefault_{disable,enable}() and use these where previously we did manual preempt increments/decrements to make the pagefault handler do the atomic thing. Currently they still rely on the increased preempt count, but do not rely on the disabled preemption, this might go away in the future. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-10-02[PATCH] provide kernel_execve on all architecturesArnd Bergmann
This adds the new kernel_execve function on all architectures that were using _syscall3() to implement execve. The implementation uses code from the _syscall3 macros provided in the unistd.h header file. I don't have cross-compilers for any of these architectures, so the patch is untested with the exception of i386. Most architectures can probably implement this in a nicer way in assembly or by combining it with the sys_execve implementation itself, but this should do it for now. 2006-09-29[PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)Atsushi Nemoto
Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch) Signed-off-by: Atsushi Nemoto <anemo@mba.ocn.ne.jp> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "Eric W. 2006-09-26[PATCH] FRV: improve FRV's use of generic IRQ handlingDavid Howells
Improve FRV's use of generic IRQ handling: (*) Use generic_handle_irq() rather than __do_IRQ() as the latter is obsolete. (*) Don't implement enable() and disable() ops as these will fall back to using unmask() and mask(). (*) Provide mask_ack() functions to avoid a call each to mask() and ack(). (*) Make the cascade handlers always return IRQ_HANDLED. (*) Implement the mask() and unmask() functions in the same order as they're listed in the ops table. 2006-09-26[PATCH] reduce MAX_NR_ZONES: fix MAX_NR_ZONES array initializationsChristoph Lameter
Fix array initialization in lots of arches The number of zones may now be reduced from 4 to 2 for many arches. Fix the array initialization for the zones array for all architectures so that it is not initializing a fixed number of elements. 2006-07-10[PATCH] FRV: Fix FRV arch compile errorsDavid Howells
Fix some FRV arch compile errors, including: (*) Marking nr_kernel_pages as __meminitdata so that references to it end up being properly calculated rather than being assumed to be in the small data section (and thus calculated wrt the GP register). Not doing this causes the linker to emit errors as the offset is too big to fit into the load instruction. (*) Move pm_power_off into an unconditionally compiled .c file as it's now unconditionally accessed. (*) Declare frv_change_cmode() in a header file rather than in a .c file, and declare it asmlinkage. 2006-07-03kbuild: introduce utsrelease.hSam Ravnborg
include/linux/version.h contained both actual KERNEL version and UTS_RELEASE that contains a subset from git SHA1 for when kernel was compiled as part of a git repository. This had the unfortunate side-effect that all files including version.h would be recompiled when some git changes was made due to changes SHA1. Split it out so we keep independent parts in separate files. Also update checkversion.pl script to no longer check for UTS_RELEASE. Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org>

2006-06-23[PATCH] fix incorrect SA_ONSTACK behaviour for 64-bit processesLaurent MEYER
- When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(), the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications V3. - Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal delivery. These two use cases makes the process crash at signal delivery.
