2013-04-30Merge branch 'smp-hotplug-for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull SMP/hotplug changes from Ingo Molnar: "This is a pretty large, multi-arch series unifying and generalizing the various disjunct pieces of idle routines that architectures have historically copied from each other and have grown in random, wildly inconsistent and sometimes buggy directions: 101 files changed, 455 insertions(+), 1328 deletions(-) this went through a number of review and test iterations before it was committed, it was tested on various architectures, was exposed to linux-next for quite some time - nevertheless it might cause problems on architectures that don't read the mailing lists and don't regularly test linux-next. This cat herding excercise was motivated by the -rt kernel, and was brought to you by Thomas "the Whip" Gleixner." * 'smp-hotplug-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (40 commits) idle: Remove GENERIC_IDLE_LOOP config switch um: Use generic idle loop ia64: Make sure interrupts enabled when we "safe_halt()" sparc: Use generic idle loop idle: Remove unused ARCH_HAS_DEFAULT_IDLE bfin: Fix typo in arch_cpu_idle() xtensa: Use generic idle loop x86: Use generic idle loop unicore: Use generic idle loop tile: Use generic idle loop tile: Enter idle with preemption disabled sh: Use generic idle loop score: Use generic idle loop s390: Use generic idle loop powerpc: Use generic idle loop parisc: Use generic idle loop openrisc: Use generic idle loop mn10300: Use generic idle loop mips: Use generic idle loop microblaze: Use generic idle loop ...

2013-04-02cpufreq: Notify all policy->cpus in cpufreq_notify_transition()Viresh Kumar
policy->cpus contains all online cpus that have single shared clock line. And their frequencies are always updated together. Many SMP system's cpufreq drivers take care of this in individual drivers but the best place for this code is in cpufreq core. This patch modifies cpufreq_notify_transition() to notify frequency change for all cpus in policy->cpus and hence updates all users of this API. 2013-03-15CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX: cleanup.Rusty Russell
We have CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX, which three archs define to the string "_". But Al Viro broke this in "consolidate cond_syscall and SYSCALL_ALIAS declarations" (in linux-next), and he's not the first to do so. Using CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX is awkward, since we usually just want to prefix it so something. So various places define helpers which are defined to nothing if CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX isn't set: 1) include/asm-generic/unistd.h defines __SYMBOL_PREFIX. 2) include/asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h defines VMLINUX_SYMBOL(sym) 3) include/linux/export.h defines MODULE_SYMBOL_PREFIX. 4) include/linux/kernel.h defines SYMBOL_PREFIX (which differs from #7) 5) kernel/modsign_certificate.S defines ASM_SYMBOL(sym) 6) scripts/modpost.c defines MODULE_SYMBOL_PREFIX 7) scripts/Makefile.lib defines SYMBOL_PREFIX on the commandline if CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX is set, so that we have a non-string version for pasting. (arch/h8300/include/asm/linkage.h defines SYMBOL_NAME(), too). Let's solve this properly: 1) No more generic prefix, just CONFIG_HAVE_UNDERSCORE_SYMBOL_PREFIX. 2) Make linux/export.h usable from asm. 3) Define VMLINUX_SYMBOL() and VMLINUX_SYMBOL_STR(). 4) Make everyone use them. Pull ARM SoC cleanups from Arnd Bergmann: "A large number of cleanups, all over the platforms. This is dominated largely by the Samsung platforms (s3c, s5p, exynos) and a few of the others moving code out of arch/arm into more appropriate subsystems. The clocksource and irqchip drivers are now abstracted to the point where platforms that are already cleaned up do not need to even specify the driver they use, it can all get configured from the device tree as we do for normal device drivers. The clocksource changes basically touch every single platform in the process. We further clean up the use of platform specific header files here, with the goal of turning more of the platforms over to being "multiplatform" enabled, which implies that they cannot expose their headers to architecture independent code any more. It is expected that no functional changes are part of the cleanup. The overall reduction in total code lines is mostly the result of removing broken and obsolete code." * tag 'cleanup' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm/arm-soc: (133 commits) ARM: mvebu: correct gated clock documentation ARM: kirkwood: add missing include for nsa310 ARM: exynos: move exynos4210-combiner to drivers/irqchip mfd: db8500-prcmu: update resource passing drivers/db8500-cpufreq: delete dangling include ARM: at91: remove NEOCORE 926 board sunxi: Cleanup the reset code and add meaningful registers defines ARM: S3C24XX: header mach/regs-mem.h local ARM: S3C24XX: header mach/regs-power.h local ARM: S3C24XX: header mach/regs-s3c2412-mem.h local ARM: S3C24XX: Remove plat-s3c24xx directory in arch/arm/ ARM: S3C24XX: transform s3c2443 subirqs into new structure ARM: S3C24XX: modify s3c2443 irq init to initialize all irqs ARM: S3C24XX: move s3c2443 irq code to irq.c ARM: S3C24XX: transform s3c2416 irqs into new structure ARM: S3C24XX: modify s3c2416 irq init to initialize all irqs ARM: S3C24XX: move s3c2416 irq init to common irq code ARM: S3C24XX: Modify s3c_irq_wake to use the hwirq property ARM: S3C24XX: Move irq syscore-ops to irq-pm clocksource: always define CLOCKSOURCE_OF_DECLARE ...

This removes the ad-hoc printk_tick()/printk_needs_cpu() hooks and make it working even in dynticks mode. - Cleanups and fixes." * 'irq-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: genirq: Export enable/disable_percpu_irq() arch Kconfig: Remove references to IRQ_PER_CPU irq_work: Remove return value from the irq_work_queue() function genirq: Avoid deadlock in spurious handling printk: Wake up klogd using irq_work irq_work: Make self-IPIs optable irq_work: Warn if there's still work on cpu_down irq_work: Flush work on CPU_DYING irq_work: Don't stop the tick with pending works nohz: Add API to check tick state irq_work: Remove CONFIG_HAVE_IRQ_WORK irq_work: Fix racy check on work pending flag irq_work: Fix racy IRQ_WORK_BUSY flag setting

The IRQ_PER_CPU Kconfig symbol was removed in the following commit: Commit 6a58fb3bad099076f36f0f30f44507bc3275cdb6 ("genirq: Remove CONFIG_IRQ_PER_CPU") merged in v2.6.39-rc1. But IRQ_PER_CPU wasn't removed from any of the architecture Kconfig files where it was defined or selected. It's completely unused so remove the remaining references. 2013-01-03ARCH: drivers remove __dev* attributes.Greg Kroah-Hartman
This fixes up all of the smaller arches that had __dev* markings for their platform-specific drivers. CONFIG_HOTPLUG is going away as an option. As a result, the __dev* markings need to be removed. This change removes the use of __devinit, __devexit_p, __devinitdata, __devinitconst, and __devexit from these drivers. 2012-12-24time: convert arch_gettimeoffset to a pointerStephen Warren
Currently, whenever CONFIG_ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET is enabled, each arch core provides a single implementation of arch_gettimeoffset(). In many cases, different sub-architectures, different machines, or different timer providers exist, and so the arch ends up implementing arch_gettimeoffset() as a call-through-pointer anyway. Examples are ARM, Cris, M68K, and it's arguable that the remaining architectures, M32R and Blackfin, should be doing this anyway. Modify arch_gettimeoffset so that it itself is a function pointer, which the arch initializes. This will allow later changes to move the initialization of this function into individual machine support or timer drivers. This is particularly useful for code in drivers/clocksource which should rely on an arch-independant mechanism to register their implementation of arch_gettimeoffset(). This patch also converts the Cris architecture to set arch_gettimeoffset directly to the final implementation in time_init(), because Cris already had separate time_init() functions per sub-architecture. M68K and ARM are converted to set arch_gettimeoffset to the final implementation in later patches, because they already have function pointers in place for this purpose.
