2019-01-06kbuild: remove redundant target cleaning on failureMasahiro Yamada
Since commit 9c2af1c7377a ("kbuild: add .DELETE_ON_ERROR special target"), the target file is automatically deleted on failure. The boilerplate code ... || { rm -f $@; false; } is unneeded. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com>
2017-09-10ARM: XIP kernel: store .data compressed in ROMNicolas Pitre
The .data segment stored in ROM is only copied to RAM once at boot time and never referenced afterwards. This is arguably a suboptimal usage of ROM resources. This patch allows for compressing the .data segment before storing it into ROM and decompressing it to RAM rather than simply copying it, saving on precious ROM space. Because global data is not available yet (obviously) we must allocate decompressor workspace memory on the stack. The .bss area is used as a stack area for that purpose before it is cleared. The required stack frame is 9568 bytes for __inflate_kernel_data() alone, so make sure the .bss is large enough to cope with that plus extra room for called functions or fail the build. Those numbers were picked arbitrarily based on the above 9568 byte stack frame: 10240 (2.5 * PAGE_SIZE): used to override -Wframe-larger-than whose default value is 1024. 12288 (3 * PAGE_SIZE): minimum .bss size to contain the stack. 2016-08-12ARM: 8588/1: localise objcopy flagsMark Rutland
We currently define OBJCOPYFLAGS in the top-level arm Makefile, and thus these flags will be passed to all uses of objcopy, kernel-wide, for which they are not explicitly overridden. The flags we set are intended for converting a few ELF files into raw binaries, and thus the flags chosen are problematic for some other uses which do not expect a raw binary result, e.g. the upcoming lkdtm rodata test: http://www.openwall.com/lists/kernel-hardening/2016/06/08/2 This patch localises the objcopy flags such that they are only used for the cases we require them for today. 2016-06-22ARM: 8576/1: avoid duplicating "Kernel: arch/arm/boot/*Image is ready"Masahiro Yamada
Commit 3939f3345050 ("ARM: 8418/1: add boot image dependencies to not generate invalid images") fixed bad image generation for the parallel building, but as its side effect, Kbuild now descends into arch/arm/boot/ again and again, duplicating the log messages. It looks clumsy, so let's display the same message only once. This commit moves the log rules from arch/arm/boot/Makefile to arch/arm/Makefile. I did not delete them completely because *Image are the final targets that users are interested in. Without this commit, the log of incremental build is like follows: $ make ARCH=arm UIMAGE_LOADADDR=0x80208000 uImage CHK include/config/kernel.release CHK include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h CHK include/generated/utsrelease.h CHK include/generated/bounds.h CHK include/generated/timeconst.h CHK include/generated/asm-offsets.h CALL scripts/checksyscalls.sh CHK include/generated/compile.h Kernel: arch/arm/boot/Image is ready Kernel: arch/arm/boot/Image is ready Kernel: arch/arm/boot/zImage is ready Kernel: arch/arm/boot/Image is ready Kernel: arch/arm/boot/zImage is ready Image arch/arm/boot/uImage is ready With this commit, it will look like follows: $ make ARCH=arm UIMAGE_LOADADDR=0x80208000 uImage CHK include/config/kernel.release CHK include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h CHK include/generated/utsrelease.h CHK include/generated/bounds.h CHK include/generated/timeconst.h CHK include/generated/asm-offsets.h CALL scripts/checksyscalls.sh CHK include/generated/compile.h Kernel: arch/arm/boot/Image is ready Kernel: arch/arm/boot/zImage is ready Kernel: arch/arm/boot/uImage is ready Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>

2013-10-02arm, kbuild: make "make install" not depend on vmlinuxRobert Richter
Install targets (install, zinstall, uinstall) on arm have a dependency to vmlinux. This may cause parts of the kernel to be rebuilt during installation. We must avoid this since this may run as root. Install targets "ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT MODIFY THE SOURCE TREE." as Linus emphasized this in: http://lkml.org/lkml/2013/7/10/600 So on arm and maybe other archs we need the same as for x86: 1648e4f8 x86, kbuild: make "make install" not depend on vmlinux This patch fixes this for arm. Dependencies are removed and instead a check to install.sh is added for the files that are needed. This issue was uncovered by this build error where the -j option is used in conjunction with install targets: $ make <makeflags> $ make <makeflags> zinstall ... DEPMOD Usage: .../scripts/depmod.sh /sbin/depmod <kernelrelease> (INSTALL_MOD_PATH and INSTALL_PATH variables set, so no root perms required in this case.) The problem is that zinstall on arm due to its dependency to vmlinux does a prepare/prepare3 and finally does a forced rewrite of kernel.release even if it exists already. Rebuilding kernel.release removes it first and then recreates it. This might race with another parallel make job running depmod. So this patch should fix this one too. Also quoting $(KERNELRELEASE) arg for install.sh as this messes argument order in case it is empty (which is the case if the kernel was not built yet). 2013-03-04ARM: dts: remove generated .dtb files on cleanNishanth Menon

This hooks dtc into Kbuild's dependency system. Thus, for example, "make dtbs" will rebuild tegra-harmony.dtb if only tegra20.dtsi has changed yet tegra-harmony.dts has not. The previous lack of this feature recently caused me to have very confusing "git bisect" results. For ARM, it's obvious what to add to $(targets). I'm not familiar enough with other architectures to know what to add there. 2010-11-30ARM: 6503/1: Thumb-2: Restore sensible zImage header layout for ↵Dave Martin
CONFIG_THUMB2_KERNEL The code which makes up the zImage header intends to leave a 32-byte gap followed by a branch to the real entry point, a magic number, and a word containing the absolute entry point address. This gets messed up with with CONFIG_THUMB2_KERNEL, because the size of the initial padding NOPs changes. Instead, the header can be made fully compatible by restoring it to ARM. In the Thumb-2 case, we can replace the initial NOPs with a sequence which switches to Thumb and jumps to the real entry point. As a consequence, the zImage entry point is now always ARM, so no special magic is needed any more for the uImage rules in the Thumb-2 case. 2010-07-12ARM: Auto calculate ZRELADDR and provide option for exceptionsEric Miao
As long as the zImage is placed within the 128MB range from the start of memory, ZRELADDR (Address where the decompressed kernel will be placed, usually == PHYS_OFFSET + TEXT_OFFSET) can be determined at run-time by masking PC with 0xf80000000. Running through all the Makefile.boot, all those zreladdr-y addresses == 0x[0-f][08]00_0000 + TEXT_OFFSET can be determined at run-time. Option CONFIG_AUTO_ZRELADDR and CONFIG_ZRELADDR are introduced, CONFIG_ZRELADDR _must_ be explicitly specified if: - ((zreladdr-y - TEXT_OFFSET) & ~0xf8000000) != 0, which means masking PC with 0xf8000000 will result in an incorrect address. Currently this is only a problem on u300. - or the assumption of the zImage being loaded by the bootloader within the first 128MB of RAM is incorrect - or when ZBOOT_ROM is used, where the above assumption is usually wrong. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
