Some devices are not able to cool down by reducing their voltage /
frequency because it could be not available or the system does not
allow voltage scaling. In this configuration, it is not possible to
use this strategy and the idle injection cooling device can be used
instead.
One idle cooling device is now present for the CPU as implemented by
the combination of the idle injection framework belonging to the power
capping framework and the thermal cooling device. The missing part is
the DT binding providing a way to describe how the cooling device will
work on the system.
A first iteration was done by making the cooling device to point to
the idle state. Unfortunately it does not make sense because it would
need to duplicate the idle state description for each CPU in order to
have a different phandle and make the thermal internal framework
happy.
It was proposed to add an cooling-cells to <3>, unfortunately the
thermal framework is expecting a value of <2> as stated by the
documentation and it is not possible from the cooling device generic
code to loop this third value to the back end cooling device.
Another proposal was to add a child 'thermal-idle' node as the SCMI
does. This approach allows to have a self-contained configuration for
the idle cooling device without colliding with the cpufreq cooling
device which is based on the CPU node. In addition, it allows to have
the cpufreq cooling device and the idle cooling device to co-exist
together as shown in the example.

Add VTM bindings documentation. In the Voltage Thermal
Management Module(VTM), K3 AM654 supplies a voltage
reference and a temperature sensor feature that are gathered in the band
gap voltage and temperature sensor (VBGAPTS) module. The band
gap provides current and voltage reference for its internal
circuits and other analog IP blocks. The analog-to-digital
converter (ADC) produces an output value that is proportional
to the silicon temperature.

Commit 944d9fec8d7a ("hugetlb: add support for gigantic page allocation
at runtime") has added the run-time allocation of gigantic pages.
However it actually works only at early stages of the system loading,
when the majority of memory is free. After some time the memory gets
fragmented by non-movable pages, so the chances to find a contiguous 1GB
block are getting close to zero. Even dropping caches manually doesn't
help a lot.
At large scale rebooting servers in order to allocate gigantic hugepages
is quite expensive and complex. At the same time keeping some constant
percentage of memory in reserved hugepages even if the workload isn't
using it is a big waste: not all workloads can benefit from using 1 GB
pages.
The following solution can solve the problem:
1) On boot time a dedicated cma area* is reserved. The size is passed
as a kernel argument.
2) Run-time allocations of gigantic hugepages are performed using the
cma allocator and the dedicated cma area
In this case gigantic hugepages can be allocated successfully with a
high probability, however the memory isn't completely wasted if nobody
is using 1GB hugepages: it can be used for pagecache, anon memory, THPs,
etc.
* On a multi-node machine a per-node cma area is allocated on each node.
Following gigantic hugetlb allocation are using the first available
numa node if the mask isn't specified by a user.
Usage:
1) configure the kernel to allocate a cma area for hugetlb allocations:
pass hugetlb_cma=10G as a kernel argument
2) allocate hugetlb pages as usual, e.g.
echo 10 > /sys/kernel/mm/hugepages/hugepages-1048576kB/nr_hugepages
If the option isn't enabled or the allocation of the cma area failed,
the current behavior of the system is preserved.
x86 and arm-64 are covered by this patch, other architectures can be
trivially added later.
The patch contains clean-ups and fixes proposed and implemented by Aslan
Bakirov and Randy Dunlap. It also contains ideas and suggestions
proposed by Rik van Riel, Michal Hocko and Mike Kravetz. Thanks!

As Documentation/kbuild/llvm.rst implies, building the kernel with a
full set of LLVM tools gets very verbose and unwieldy.
Provide a single switch LLVM=1 to use Clang and LLVM tools instead
of GCC and Binutils. You can pass it from the command line or as an
environment variable.
Please note LLVM=1 does not turn on the integrated assembler. You need
to pass LLVM_IAS=1 to use it. When the upstream kernel is ready for the
integrated assembler, I think we can make it default.
We discussed what we need, and we agreed to go with a simple boolean
flag that switches both target and host tools:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/3/28/494
https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/4/3/43
Some items discussed, but not adopted:
- LLVM_DIR
When multiple versions of LLVM are installed, I just thought supporting
LLVM_DIR=/path/to/my/llvm/bin/ might be useful.
CC = $(LLVM_DIR)clang
LD = $(LLVM_DIR)ld.lld
...
However, we can handle this by modifying PATH. So, we decided to not do
this.
- LLVM_SUFFIX
Some distributions (e.g. Debian) package specific versions of LLVM with
naming conventions that use the version as a suffix.
CC = clang$(LLVM_SUFFIX)
LD = ld.lld(LLVM_SUFFIX)
...
will allow a user to pass LLVM_SUFFIX=-11 to use clang-11 etc.,
but the suffixed versions in /usr/bin/ are symlinks to binaries in
/usr/lib/llvm-#/bin/, so this can also be handled by PATH.

The 'AS' variable is unused for building the kernel. Only the remaining
usage is to turn on the integrated assembler. A boolean flag is a better
fit for this purpose.
AS=clang was added for experts. So, I replaced it with LLVM_IAS=1,
breaking the backward compatibility.

The currently minimum-supported binutils version 2.21 has the problem of
promoting symbols which are defined outside of a section into absolute.
According to Arvind:
binutils-2.21 and -2.22. An x86-64 defconfig will fail with
Invalid absolute R_X86_64_32S relocation: _etext
and after fixing that one, with
Invalid absolute R_X86_64_32S relocation: __end_of_kernel_reserve
Those two versions of binutils have a bug when it comes to handling
symbols defined outside of a section and binutils 2.23 has the proper
fix, see: https://sourceware.org/legacy-ml/binutils/2012-06/msg00155.html
Therefore, up to the fixed version directly, skipping the broken ones.
Currently shipping distros already have the fixed binutils version so
there should be no breakage resulting from this.

"On x86" and "On SPARC" are now definition list terms, like

The Credits list is now a bulleted list, like lots of Credits lists in

unpunctuated sentence in the generated documentation.

The compressed cache for swap pages (zswap) currently needs from 1 to 3
extra kernel command line parameters in order to make it work: it has to
be enabled by adding a "zswap.enabled=1" command line parameter and if one
wants a different compressor or pool allocator than the default lzo / zbud
combination then these choices also need to be specified on the kernel
command line in additional parameters.
Using a different compressor and allocator for zswap is actually pretty
common as guides often recommend using the lz4 / z3fold pair instead of
the default one. In such case it is also necessary to remember to enable
the appropriate compression algorithm and pool allocator in the kernel
config manually.
Let's avoid the need for adding these kernel command line parameters and
automatically pull in the dependencies for the selected compressor
algorithm and pool allocator by adding an appropriate default switches to
Kconfig.
The default values for these options match what the code was using
previously as its defaults.

In commit 357b4da50a62 ("x86: respect memory size limiting via mem=
parameter") a global varialbe max_mem_size is added to store the value
parsed from 'mem= ', then checked when memory region is added. This truly
stops those DIMMs from being added into system memory during boot-time.
However, it also limits the later memory hotplug functionality. Any DIMM
can't be hotplugged any more if its region is beyond the max_mem_size. We
will get errors like:
[ 216.387164] acpi PNP0C80:02: add_memory failed
[ 216.389301] acpi PNP0C80:02: acpi_memory_enable_device() error
[ 216.392187] acpi PNP0C80:02: Enumeration failure
This will cause issue in a known use case where 'mem=' is added to the
hypervisor. The memory that lies after 'mem=' boundary will be assigned
to KVM guests. After commit 357b4da50a62 merged, memory can't be extended
dynamically if system memory on hypervisor is not sufficient.
So fix it by also checking if it's during boot-time restricting to add
memory. Otherwise, skip the restriction.
And also add this use case to document of 'mem=' kernel parameter.

Add documentation for free page reporting. Currently the only consumer is
virtio-balloon, however it is possible that other drivers might make use
of this so it is best to add a bit of documetation explaining at a high
level how to use the API.

The thp_fault_fallback and thp_file_fallback vmstats are incremented if
either the hugepage allocation fails through the page allocator or the
hugepage charge fails through mem cgroup.
This patch leaves this field untouched but adds two new fields,
thp_{fault,file}_fallback_charge, which is incremented only when the mem
cgroup charge fails.
This distinguishes between attempted hugepage allocations that fail due to
fragmentation (or low memory conditions) and those that fail due to mem
cgroup limits. That can be used to determine the impact of fragmentation
on the system by excluding faults that failed due to memcg usage.
