2018-03-10tracing: Add a clock attribute for hist triggersTom Zanussi
The default clock if timestamps are used in a histogram is "global". If timestamps aren't used, the clock is irrelevant. Use the "clock=" param only if you want to override the default "global" clock for a histogram with timestamps. 2018-03-10tracing: Add inter-event hist trigger DocumentationTom Zanussi
Add background and details on inter-event hist triggers, including hist variables, synthetic events, and actions. 2018-03-10tracing: Add 'last error' error facility for hist triggersTom Zanussi
With the addition of variables and actions, it's become necessary to provide more detailed error information to users about syntax errors. Add a 'last error' facility accessible via the erroring event's 'hist' file. Reading the hist file after an error will display more detailed information about what went wrong, if information is available. This extended error information will be available until the next hist trigger command for that event. # echo xxx > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/sched/sched_wakeup/trigger echo: write error: Invalid argument # cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/sched/sched_wakeup/hist ERROR: Couldn't yyy: zzz Last command: xxx Also add specific error messages for variable and action errors. 2018-03-10tracing: Add cpu field for hist triggersTom Zanussi
A common key to use in a histogram is the cpuid - add a new cpu 'synthetic' field named 'cpu' for that purpose. Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/89537645bfc957e0d76e2cacf5f0ada88691a6cc.1516069914.git.tom.zanussi@linux.intel.com Signed-off-by: Tom Zanussi <tom.zanussi@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt (VMware) <rostedt@goodmis.org>
2018-03-10tracing: Add usecs modifier for hist trigger timestampsTom Zanussi
Appending .usecs onto a common_timestamp field will cause the timestamp value to be in microseconds instead of the default nanoseconds. A typical latency histogram using usecs would look like this: # echo 'hist:keys=pid,prio:ts0=common_timestamp.usecs ... # echo 'hist:keys=next_pid:wakeup_lat=common_timestamp.usecs-$ts0 ... This also adds an external trace_clock_in_ns() to trace.c for the timestamp conversion. 2018-03-10tracing: Add timestamp_mode trace fileTom Zanussi
Add a new option flag indicating whether or not the ring buffer is in 'absolute timestamp' mode. Currently this is only set/unset by hist triggers that make use of a common_timestamp. As such, there's no reason to make this writeable for users - its purpose is only to allow users to determine unequivocally whether or not the ring buffer is in that mode (although absolute timestamps can coexist with the normal delta timestamps, when the ring buffer is in absolute mode, timestamps written while absolute mode is in effect take up more space in the buffer, and are not as efficient). 2017-11-05ftrace/docs: Add documentation on how to use ftrace from within the kernelSteven Rostedt
With the coming removal of jprobes, using ftrace callbacks is one of the utilities that replace the jprobes functionality. Having a document that explains how to use ftrace as such will help in the transition from jprobes to ftrace. This document is for kernel developers that require attaching a callback to a function within the kernel. 2017-10-20doc: coresight: correct usage for disabling idle statesLeo Yan
In the coresight CPU debug document it suggests to use 'echo' command to set latency request to /dev/cpu_dma_latency so can disable all CPU idle states, but in fact this doesn't work. This is because when the command 'echo' exits, it releases the device node's file descriptor and the kernel release function removes the QoS constraint; finally when the command 'echo' finished there have no constraint imposed on cpu_dma_latency. This patch changes to use 'exec' to access '/dev/cpu_dma_latency', the command 'exec' can avoid the file descriptor to be closed so we can keep the constraint on cpu_dma_latency. This patch also adds the info for reference docs for PM QoS and cpuidle sysfs. 2017-04-04tracing/kprobes: expose maxactive for kretprobe in kprobe_eventsAlban Crequy
When a kretprobe is installed on a kernel function, there is a maximum limit of how many calls in parallel it can catch (aka "maxactive"). A kernel module could call register_kretprobe() and initialize maxactive (see example in samples/kprobes/kretprobe_example.c). But that is not exposed to userspace and it is currently not possible to choose maxactive when writing to /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events The default maxactive can be as low as 1 on single-core with a non-preemptive kernel. This is too low and we need to increase it not only for recursive functions, but for functions that sleep or resched. This patch updates the format of the command that can be written to kprobe_events so that maxactive can be optionally specified. I need this for a bpf program attached to the kretprobe of inet_csk_accept, which can sleep for a long time. This patch includes a basic selftest: > # ./ftracetest -v test.d/kprobe/ > === Ftrace unit tests === > [1] Kprobe dynamic event - adding and removing [PASS] > [2] Kprobe dynamic event - busy event check [PASS] > [3] Kprobe dynamic event with arguments [PASS] > [4] Kprobes event arguments with types [PASS] > [5] Kprobe dynamic event with function tracer [PASS] > [6] Kretprobe dynamic event with arguments [PASS] > [7] Kretprobe dynamic event with maxactive [PASS] > > # of passed: 7 > # of failed: 0 > # of unresolved: 0 > # of untested: 0 > # of unsupported: 0 > # of xfailed: 0 > # of undefined(test bug): 0 BugLink: https://github.com/iovisor/bcc/issues/1072 Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1491215782-15490-1-git-send-email-alban@kinvolk.io Acked-by: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Alban Crequy <alban@kinvolk.io> Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt (VMware) <rostedt@goodmis.org>

Pull documentation update from Jonathan Corbet: "These are the documentation changes for 4.10. It's another busy cycle for the docs tree, as the sphinx conversion continues. Highlights include: - Further work on PDF output, which remains a bit of a pain but should be more solid now. - Five more DocBook template files converted to Sphinx. Only 27 to go... Lots of plain-text files have also been converted and integrated. - Images in binary formats have been replaced with more source-friendly versions. - Various bits of organizational work, including the renaming of various files discussed at the kernel summit. - New documentation for the device_link mechanism. ... and, of course, lots of typo fixes and small updates" * tag 'docs-4.10' of git://git.lwn.net/linux: (193 commits) dma-buf: Extract dma-buf.rst Update Documentation/00-INDEX docs: 00-INDEX: document directories/files with no docs docs: 00-INDEX: remove non-existing entries docs: 00-INDEX: add missing entries for documentation files/dirs docs: 00-INDEX: consolidate process/ and admin-guide/ description scripts: add a script to check if Documentation/00-INDEX is sane Docs: change sh -> awk in REPORTING-BUGS Documentation/core-api/device_link: Add initial documentation core-api: remove an unexpected unident ppc/idle: Add documentation for powersave=off Doc: Correct typo, "Introdution" => "Introduction" Documentation/atomic_ops.txt: convert to ReST markup Documentation/local_ops.txt: convert to ReST markup Documentation/assoc_array.txt: convert to ReST markup docs-rst: parse-headers.pl: cleanup the documentation docs-rst: fix media cleandocs target docs-rst: media/Makefile: reorganize the rules docs-rst: media: build SVG from graphviz files docs-rst: replace bayer.png by a SVG image ...
